Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Question is whether RR is looking at a 2 or 3 year cycle then set things up to maintain a level.
If he's going 2 year (this years draft and FA to get competitive, next years to show success) then he's got to patch the line up and probably get in a top TE now. On that basis I'd try and get TW back (and get his replacement in next years draft) and sort the Scherff situation out, then draft competition at RT, keeping the 2 best of the 3. But, assuming we draft Young, are you going to get a starter at RT in rd 3 or lower? If he's going for a 3 year plan, then he can leave some of the pieces in place as now, and round out the starters using next years draft, though I'd still build up the OL now to protect the QB and RB's if nothing else. He could get a serviceable TE or 2 in FA until he can draft a starter and one or even both tackles next year. Again, I'd try and get TW back to postpone the need for an LT in this draft, else maybe LT has to be an FA find. I agree on going after someone like Boston, as we can then concentrate on the other positions in the draft. We sign him to a 2 or 3 year deal and we can then hang on for maybe 2 years to draft an FS. But I think we'll only get a longer term solution at FS via the draft, a la ST, so we need to draft that guy wihtin 3 years. probably the same for starting CB (Moreland might evolve into a starter but I don't see that as nailed on). He can't fill all our gaps and make us a SB contending team in one off season (unless he gets lucky), and given the age of players already on the roster in certain positions I'd concentrate on OL now, and the rest next year. |

Interesting article about the 14 UFAs Carolina has that RR might possibly be interested in vulturing.

I'm sure Rivera will bring in a couple he likes though. |

I just hope he doesn't make the roster Carolina north. They sucked last year and I don't want a bunch of his ex players that didn't perform for him.

Yeah doesn’t sound like many of them offer much upside for us. I know Ron wasn’t a head coach when he came to Carolina from San Diego but does anyone know if he tried to pull the same trick and bring a bunch of people from SD when he went to Carolina? |
Again?
I wouldn't...I think Moses/Geron Christian as RT should be ok. Lets see if Christian has developed, he took improved steps this year. Lets focus Schreff and TW situation first...securing our 2 best Olinemen.
Moses has a terrible year. Playing and penalty-wise. Christian hasn’t made the grade. Resign Trent, Scherff, Flowers and maybe Penn. Draft your third round to best OT. Let that new OT compete with Martin for Moses spot. Use the loser as backup OL. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I just read an article that got me thinking about: re-hiring Fuller at CB from the Chiefs! Wouldn’t it be great to get him back? This would fix ANOTHER of Bruce Allen’s stupid trade deals.
Kendall Fuller back in the Burgundy and Gold in 2020? He might have a SB ring to show everyone! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Morgan Moses was absolutely God awful this year and I really hope he's replaced
|
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
The penalties did reduce massively after Gruden left.... given the other needs and a fresh coaching staff, replacing Moses may not be the highest priority

He plays the slot the and the more like a rover position in sets. We need strictly a boundary corner. I’m not exactly sure sure if we will play more man or zone, if the corners will play they’re own side or follow, etc. but what we don’t need is a slot corner or strong safety. Corner will should be top priority on defense...I like Byron Jones or Trae Waynes could be an options. There a ton out there and we could get a short term vet signing as well like Chris Harris Jr. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Hunter Henry - He might be heavily pursued this off season. NE, Colts, Jags, us and others are hungry with a TE.
TE who can play all 3 downs is really in demand right now. I was hoping we could get one in FA but I dont want to pay 10M plus. Might have to draft a guy in the 3rd or 4th if the right TE is there. |

Personally, I'm kinda iffy on all those 3 players. Henry is good but he has injuries history. Ebron apparently is dependent on offense schemes since he didn't do much with Lions but did well with Colts, also he has issue with dropping balls. I'm not sure about Hooper since I haven't paid much attention to Falcons but it seems like Hooper didn't do much in first 3 years and then played well on contract year, I don't like signing players who don't play well until the contract year although, if Redskins believe that it was because of how Falcons utilized Hooper then I would be fine with Hooper. I prefer for Redskins to draft a TE although it might be challenging for Redskins to draft a starter due to no 2nd rd pick. |

we paid 15 million this year for 2 garbage TEs who we got zilch from. We suddenly have a problem paying 10 million for a quality TE? if you rank top 15 pending free agents those 3 TEs easily make the list. Henry is maybe a top 5. Ebron, Hooper, and Henry are quality. If anyone bothers me its Henry with the injury history. leaning just on the draft for TE is the epitome of stupid. Bringing Reed back would be worst tho. |

Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I was looking for an article that would lay out the like the top 25 or so most expensive FA signings last offseason so we could see how they fared after 1 year.
Didnt quite find that but I found this article of Bleacher Reports which lays out their top 25 off season moves .. they made this article on may 2019 so they thought these were the top moves prior to a snap being played. This article does not age well. Top Best Moves per "them" 1. Trading for OBJ 2. Trading for Antonio brown 3. trading for Josh Rosen 4. Jags sign Foles 6. Drafting Dwayne haskins 7.pats trade for Bennett 10. Eagles sign Zach Brown https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2836541-ranking-the-25-best-moves-of-the-2019-nfl-offseason#slide16 Did any big splash trades or FA signings pan out last year? Earl Thomas looks over paid. Paradis had an okay to bad year per PFF. I cant think of a single big move that worked last off season. |

I just took a look at Hooper's stats and it looks like he progressed well, especially in the last 2 years. Again, like I mentioned before, I didn't pay enough attention to Falcons so I don't know much about him other than the fact that he was a good for fantasy football. Now that Scott Turner is our offense coordinator and it's widely expected for Turner to utilize TE a lot so it would make sense for us to spend good amount of money on a free agent TE. I just don't want Redskins to force it because there are not enough options. Although at this point, I trust Kyle Smith, Riveria and Turner to make right decision with the TE position. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
If we could only sign one outside free agent, I'd take Austin Hooper.
Then in ideal world, I'm drafting Chase Young, a swing tackle, a CB, a FS, and another young TE. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Hooper was known as a ST and blocker before breaking out as a pass catcher this year. I really want a do everything TE vs a Jordan Reed/Davis catch only type.
I think Atlanta and Chargers resign their guys. They are young, impact position and teams fans seem to really like them. Lots of interest around the league. Unless one of these guys rejects their current teams reasonable offers bc they want to get the biggest contract they can ... I dont see them being available. Then if they do become available, it might be a feeding frenzy. I think we need to come up with a plan B, bc while id love a Hooper or Henry, I just dont see it being realistic. |

Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
More on Hooper:
Austin Hooper, tight end Notable numbers: 75 receptions, 787 yards, six touchdowns, 96 targets, one drop, 313 yards after the catch, 41 first downs in 2019. 2019 earnings: $2.025 million Quoting Hooper: “I’m not going to speak on [the contract situation] too much. It’s a business. Obviously I would like to be here. I’m open to coming back here. But I know that I haven’t received an offer yet. If I do, I’d definitely like to be here." Projecting the outcome: The Falcons, with so much money tied up in top players such as Ryan, Julio Jones, Jarrett, and Deion Jones, will pass on signing Hooper to a lucrative extension and let him sign elsewhere. And Hooper will exceed $10 million per year with his new team. Meanwhile, the Falcons will see what they have in Jaeden Graham, who filled in nicely when Hooper was hurt this past season and is due to make $585,000 in 2020. The Falcons also will look hard at the draft class to find a potential pass-catching threat. https://www.espn.com/blog/atlanta-falcons/post/_/id/34943/falcons-face-hard-decisions-on-austin-hooper-other-in-house-free-agents Austin Hooper said he is open to coming back next year but acknowledged it’s a business. We’ll see if the Falcons are able to re-sign him. #Falcons https://twitter.com/FalconsKelsey/status/1211685996049371138/photo/1 Falcons fans responding to the tweet seem positive the team will Tag him if needed. --------------- Ebron -- hes not a blocking TE from what I have seen and read, on top of having 50/50 hands ... there is nothing I like about Ebron tbh. hard pass for me (thats knows little to nothing) https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2806903-the-improbable-renewed-swag-of-eric-ebron ^^ good comprehensive article on Ebron |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I'm not stressing about the TE position. Rivera knows it's importance so I think that will be addressed not only in the draft but in free agency as well.
I'm hoping we see the rebirth of a Fullback/H-back on the team. |

Have watched him, he is a quality player who wouldnt cost a premium draft pick, he has great hands. 4th or 5th round he should be there. The fact that he is Randy Moss's son is just a bonus. He's 6'3" 250lb, he can run well enough. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Ebron would be a solid pick up but at the right price, I'd also like Hooper.
|
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I did some research on Hooper and I'm starting to warm up to the idea of signing him although I'm still not 100% convinced that he can make a big difference for Redskins. The bottom line is, with the new staff in Redskins FO, I trust them to make right decision on the TE position. If they think Hooper (or any other TE options) is the guy we should go after, then go for it.
|
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I didn't actually realise we had 7 TE's on the roster, including the PS. I reckon we'll go after one in FA (and I prefer Hooper over Ebron) and see if we get lucky in the lower rounds, bring up to 7 into camp (assuming Reed and Davis are gone). I just hope they get a decent blocker somewhere in there.
Maybe even a Kittle clone in the mix. Never mind his receiving credentials, his run blocking for the 49ers has been fantastic. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Hooper and Thaddeus Moss would make a compelling set of TE's. Moss looked awfully good on the receiving end of Joe Burrow passes.

Adding new blood and top talent to the TE position will greatly help Haskins and the offense. We’ll turn around our terrible Red Zone percentage. The team spent huge cap money for TE players in 2019 and they were always hurt. What we finished with at the end of the season was scrubs at the bottom of the barrel.
Time for a major reset. I think this will be the #1 priority for Redskin’s FA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
TE is very important, however, the OL is more important. There are 3 or 4 major question marks.
The difference between TE FA and the OL FA, is that we largely have our OL onboard and largely in place. Rehire TW, Scherff & Flower. Martin played well at the end of a lost season, so he’s ready to challenge Moses for his spot. We still need to draft or acquire more OL talent. The TE players position needs to be rebuilt from the ground up. Reed and Davis gone. I’m not even sure if the guys we used this season can even be salvaged for depth. We need an excellent, young, BIG and who can catch the rock in the end zone and block. We will have to pay to get the right guy, but Reed and Davises cap will bank it. Right now the TE is a black hole in our offense that can only be fixed by $$$FA. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I read in a so called NFL Draft publication when analyzing/rating TE’s said, “Pure blocking tight ends can be found later in the draft and don’t often get scouting profiles.”
When I went to other 2020 draft talent evaluators when talking about TE’s it was all about receiving. Barely no mention about blocking skills or no mention at all. It would seem there might be a few strong blocking TE’s that we’re trapped in a shitty offense/QB in college and were never given the chance to be targeted in his offense. We need to find a few of these guys and develop them. Being a good in line blocking NFL TE is a god given talent. Coaching blocking technique helps improve a blocker, but you cannot teach a Jordan Reed like TE who was not even a good blocker in college become capable of blocking NFL LB’s and DL. |
Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
Yeah, we need an elite TE FA and I would be surprised if we DON’T get one in the FA period. A big target for Haskins in the red zone.

Re: Offseason Roster Moves Thread
I like the logic of signing Hooper or Henry if available and drafting a blocking TE from a run based college, on the basis you get a blocking TE who might turn into a good receiver.
Curious though, we don't see many projects like Gates any more; trying out non-football athletes. Are NFL teams abandoning that kind of thing now? |
