Damn it punch. No! We need to get the best qb prospect available.
We need to do that every year till we get the guy.
If we had any semblance of an oline, a real OC, and BR and AG running today Howell would have been all we need. Dude has a gun, and wheels, and he knows when to run. He simply needs experience. No doubt we would be in the playoffs if he started all year. Number one priority is oline. Then CB, and ILB. Get a more consistent kicker and this team will be in business.
Howell should have been a 1st rounder, NFL experts are obsessed with height, he's short for QB standards. Give me a smart, tough, gutsy QB that makes quick decisions and is mentally tough. That's what Howell is, reminds me of JoeyT minus the arrogance.
Watched him a bunch in college I know he can be a good quarterback in this league. With quarterback play like we saw today we probably beat the Giants twice, the Browns, Titans, Minny, and maybe Detroit. Quarterback play is what held us back in all those games. It is mind numbing that this staff couldn’t see that all year long.

You would think with the recent success with shorter QBs it would change but unfortunately they want to see Josh Allen’s of the world

Howell has potential and I’d like to see him in a full season. It will also depend on who the GM is if a new Owner is in

So if the best QB prospect isn't as good as the prospect you already have when your 1st rounder comes up (and that will be a strong possibility) you (as GM for the day) would draft him with your first pick (Even if you could probably wait 3-4 rounds to draft him anyway)???????

I'll believe it when I see the team is sold. Bring back Kyle Smith as GM, he did a great job.

What a strange game this was. Joey Slye gets an F minus. Howell showed he can play and also showed he still has plenty to learn before he earns the starting job - but he can at least compete for the job in the offseason. Ron showed he can become the first HC to lead a team to a .500 record in a 17 game season. Scott Turner still showed me nothing to get excited about. Khaleke Hudson showed he deserves more PT. I especially loved his bit about hard work being undefeated postgame.

BTW for all the shit-talking about Dak, he was 9-1 against the Commies before today. 9-2 now and a well deserved 9-2 but 9-2 nonetheless. He also had the Cowboys averaging more PPG than Mahomes or Allen since 2020. Hopefully today provided the blueprint to beat him going forward.

Even if Howell's not the guy, don't make any massive reaches (Unless one is pining to be like the Raiders).

A mid rounder, I would not waste a pick. My gut tells me Howell is it, I haven't had this feeling in years, probably since Trent Green.

Shit talking Dak is cus the guy is a turnover machine not cus he couldn’t beat us. Dak has been awful this year. Every quarterback in the world is 9-1 against us. Lol.

And Im not sending Howell to the HOF or anything but let’s remember he did what he did against a good team, with Scott Turner calling the plays, a third and fourth string RB, no TE, and no Oline! Not sure how much more you could have asked from a guy making his first start under those circumstances. Im pretty excited about this guy moving forward. Got the arm strength. Got the mobility. Everything else will come with repetition. But you cannot teach arm strength or mobility.

I saw more potential today from Howell than last 2 seasons of this teams QB play! even when Taylor had descent stats we all knew there were a lot of very lucky completions.. The options we have right now
A. Sign another aging vet ( Fitz,Wentz,Ryan,Carr types)..,Howell backup
B. Someone like Minshew,Darnold,Mayfield,Goff,jimmy G types… Howell backup
C. Keep Taylor as backup and roll with Howell and draft another QB mid rnd

I like B and C options .. what do you guys think ?

Actually the more I think about it I'm making it a priority to resign him. Then I am drafting a QB, probably in the 4th round.
If you are going to bring TH back that is the way to do it. If not I think you have to draft a qb with 1st or 2nd if it grades out.

My initial thought on Howell is that we found short Daniel Jones which imo is fine. You can build around that and might even make the playoffs from time to time.

He threw that terrible pick and he was pissed and he didn’t make another mistake. We may not have been playing for anything and so there wasn’t pressure in that regard but he was certainly playing for something. That was an audition and he passed. Hopefully he won’t be playing for these loser coaches.
Oline
CB
ILB
K
New staff.
Sign Payne, and get a fully healthy Chase back.
Roll with Sam.
Add some solid depth in FA.
Draft well.
There is a blueprint that is doable but Im worried about who will be calling the shots while we are taking out the trash.

Really? Daniel Jones took alot longer than one game to look as good as Howell did. Im with you SF. Not sure what else the guy could have done with what he had to work with today. We should be absolutely elated about his performance. His ceiling is waaaay higher than a short Daniel Jones.

Give him time to throw and an OC who actually belongs in the NFL and he is going to be way better than you think.

I hope so but odds are against him. Nobody drafted after 5th has gone on to be a quality starter over the last two decades so I’d prefer to think of my self as pragmatic. Also calling him a short Daniel Jones isn’t negative, If he could give us Daniel Jones production I could live with that and we can build a team around it, but I need to see more before I think he is a starter. I thought 19 passes and run heavy is the way you set him up for success (very similar to Jones).

Loved arm strength, he had an good touch on the ball, and his tucking and running but a few under thrown balls and few others into double and triple coverage, hope that is just first game jitters and not his game IQ.

Nothing is stopping me from drafting a QB this April if we like him.

I’d sit down and offer Henike a backup QB contract if Turner returns. If we move on from Turner, I wouldn’t offer Heinike anything. His value is tied to his knowledge of Turner system.

He threw 2 balls that were pass interference and weren't called, he went on the 5th because of his height and not talent. To me, he was the best QB of the draft.

Nice way to end the season.

Howell played pretty good for the most part, but I think we should seriously pump the brakes on crowning him the week 1 starter. He engineered exactly three drives over 50 yards, and one of those ended with an interception into triple coverage in the end zone.

He did what I hoped he would do though - he showed that he belongs and that the game isn't too fast for him, he didn't get hurt, and he beat Dallas. I do hope he's the guy, but I still think you bring in a Veteran QB and he competes for the job. Can't just hand it to him after one nice team win.

The Dallas offense looked pretty bad (182 yards on 66 plays), but that had a lot to do with our D. They really played well tonight despite missing some key guys - J Allen, Curl, St-Juste, J Davis.

Re: Sam Howell takes Down Dallas postgame

Dallas looked like shit and I loved every second of it.

Howell showed enough for us to use our ressources on other needs (OL, LB, CB depth), not every team has a Mahomes or Josh Allen, he showed his floor is at least being an average starter IMO, let's move forward with that.

Defense played well, another big play by Danny Johnson, Chase Young played well.

Didn't have my eyes on him all game but when I watched him Chris Paul faired well. Saw him pick up a stunt with ease, he could be quality depth IMO.

Re: Sam howell takes Down Dallas postgame

Right now you have to put Howell in as #1 going into camp. That doesn't mean week1 starter unless he earns it. He offers what TH offers but with an arm. Maybe more. But he definitely offers more than Wentz. Give him the chance to lead the team and build around him.

Totally agree on a) a vet to compete/back up and b) draft another QB where he's BPA. If nothing else you want a #3 even just stashed on the PS just in case. We need to rebuild the OL and LB lineup and bolster the secondary as priority. Without a high level pick/draft capital, reaching for a QB now is stupid. Stick him behind a porous OL and it's easily a wasted pick. Howell looked like he can play with what we had out there yesterday, give him a chance to play with better and see what he can do. IMHO at worst you have a better quality starter than CW or TH until you find your guy. Even RR must be able to see that.

You forget Jones first game in Tampa or his second game against Washington in 2019! I like your new QB and I hope he doesn't have to go through the BS Jones went threw in his first 4 seasons.

Re: Sam howell takes Down Dallas postgame

howell did make some mistakes and the tape on him was limited, so crowning him off one game is a little much (like the people screaming we were going to finish 4-0 to end the season).

He does seem like the best option on the roster, but our other options aren't the greatest. He wasn't asked to sling it for 400 yards today. He did more good than bad and did make a real contribution to the win.

If turner goes (tbd, but not the worst idea), then it's a new offense and a question as to if/how far that sets him back. Also, the o-line, still garbage, please fix.

Re: Sam howell takes Down Dallas postgame

With Howell it is not just the arm, his ball placement is light years ahead of Heinicke and Wentz, that allowed Terry and Jahan to run after the catch, also contributed to a couple of the drops as they were getting a little to eager to head upfield knowing the ball was going to arrive when it was supposed to. Directly contributed to Terrys touchdown. Still cant fathom how you start a rookie QB to "take a look" in a meaningless game and only have him pass the ball 19 times. A couple of PI should also be added to the evaluation of his completion/yardage stats

I meant 5th round and beyond. Dak is alo an exception and not the rule. Only him, Cousins and Kyle Orton have become long term starters out of 24 QBs drafted in the 4th in the last 20 years (Excluding Zappe and Ian Brook). That is a 12.5% hit rate, which is not great but probably expected. (There are a few decent back up QBs however) All I am saying is that The stats show the later the round the QB is drafted the less likely it is to hit. I am cautiously optimistic but that is all at this point.

QB drafts for any ones interest:

I dont think anyone is saying only option, but deserves a chance to compete for it. In what will be, hopefully, a year of transition I just don't want Ron to sell the farm for a veteran next year which impacts salary cap and player retention for the next 3 years. Ron basically has a one year prove it deal, if he is lucky, he will be tempted to go all in at QB again next year if he is not restrained by ownership
