Bills will because they paid a bunch of guys who are meh.

Cowboys just need too extend Dak to lower that cap number and restructure a couple guys. Maybe cut Gallup.

So IF the Bears are going to trade Fields, can they do so before free agency starts? Just wondering about their timeline there since he would definitely be in the mix of free agent QBs for teams trying to get one.

We traded for Alex Smith in January before free agency started...I think maybe it's not "official" until then, but I'm not quite sure.

Zach Ertz signing with Commanders on one-year deal as Washington adds former Pro Bowl TE before free agency

Up to $5m for one year, hopefully heavily incentive laden. Was thinking about something I heard the other day and it may well be true, it will take a couple of years before top free agents with options will want to come to Washington. I think Adam Peters and co will hold of from committing large amounts beyond this year to keep that cap space in hand for better FA in following years. years

That's not surprising. We don't even know who our quarterback is yet, so I wouldn't expect, especially offensive players, to be flocking to this team just yet.

I think he will be looking at short term contracts too . . . players like Tyron Smith fit the bill . . . we have the money, they are looking for 7 year deals as they know its not happening . . . give him a 2 year $32 million contact or something. That will give us a couple of drafts to ensure we have a replacement available.

Ertz is a solid pickup low risk..

Kam Curl in 28 career games

0 INTS
2 SACKS
1 FF

Yeah he isn't a legit FS in most defenses

Isn't Forrest the FS and Curl the SS?

Don't hate the Ertz signing at all, but he's a role player at this point in his career.

Mitch Morse, Bills centre just released. Should we be interested? I don't know much about him but he had a big contract does it follow that he is a good veteran to target?

No YAC ZAC. His nickname in Philly. Lol.

As a depth guy it is fine but he doesn’t block and I would think with our oline , which may be improved but will still be young, we would be looking for a TE who at least blocks. Please do not just bring in anyone Quinn or Kingsbury ever had a cup of coffee with.

We should be interested in any OL and LB free agents. Can't address every weakness in the draft, and they shouldn't pass up on a potential all pro draftee just because it's not a position of need.

I think it's smart to bring in a Vet or two who know the systems, both offense and defense.

Like MTK said, Ertz is likely just a role player at this point, but being a coach on the field is an important role. Maybe he gets significant playing time, maybe not. Either way, he's a better option than L Thomas for multiple reasons.

I like it.

weak year to get a TE in FA. good year to get a young safety. a few good LB and OL guys out there too.

Curl is definitely a SS, he plays in the box. Still, expecting to be paid top dollar when you don't force turnovers is not fair. He's an impact player for sure, but you gotta be elite to get paid top dollar.

I like the Ertz signing - guessing Kliff K. wants to use him as a mentor for the younger guys. Expecting him to be TE#1 at this point in his career is too much.

Throughout his career Ertz has been able to convert First Downs at an exceptional rate. The Commanders brain trust must think he can continue to do that as a role player.

Waste of time signing Ertz. Injury plagued and past his prime. Seems like Kingsberry and Peters are throwing him a bone.

I see 2 possibilities; they see one or 2 FA's that they like better than Curl, or they see him coming back on a lesser deal than he thought he'd get in earlier negotiations/on the open market. Either one is fine by me, though there is teh 'devil you know' aspect to re-signing him.

Throughout his career until 2019. Since then he has missed an average of 8 games a year. Missed 10 last year. Dude is toast. You want to bring him here to help with his knowledge of the offense make him a TE coach and save the roster spot.

It isn’t a huge deal, but I really don’t think the guy brings anything to the table.

I wonder, given the number of teams with cap issues and the amount of cap space we have whether the FO is thinking about leveraging the cap space this year to get extra draft picks by effectively trading the cap space, it had been done before.

Chief X_Phackter 03-07-2024 03:45 PM

Re: Commanders 2024 Free Agency Thread

I think they'll use this year to fill some holes with short term deals, draft the QB of the future, and start rebuilding the roster through the draft. I don't think they'll trade cap space (didn't know that was a thing), or make a ton of big splashes in FA.

If they hit on the QB, are competitive in the division, and improve the facilities, this will be a more desirable destination for players next year.

He's no doubt coming here at a bargain price on a one year deal. We have the money to find out if he is toast or he can play a role in our offense. This is a no risk scenario. If he's done, then cut him. If he sticks, we'll have a veteran influence in the TE room.

We have a ton of cap space, so why wouldn't we add a young star or two now to anchor our team? Josh Allen, for example, is a 26 year old Pro Bowl Edge. Pay him the money! He likes money, I assume. To me, money trumps a warmer shower room any day.

Also, are you not listening to what our new GM and HC keep telling us about not rebuilding but intending to win now? I believe them, so I say let them over-spend to beat out the other teams for FA's they want.

Not that I wish to deter your enthusiasm, but Josh Allen has been franchise tagged and AP himself said they would not be big spenders

If Peters likes a player he should collaborate with Quinn on how he fits, then get the player. Given the state of the division is every reason to believe that they can put a division winning roster together. All four teams have new defensive coordinators, two have new offensive coordinators, and And the two division leaders from last year fell apart And are rife for internal strife.

You make valid points. But he's clearly better than what they have now and this draft class is weak at a position that usually takes a year or 2 to develop. I don't know which other TEs are available but this seems like a risk worth taking.

Unpopular opinion incoming...
Our running backs are mediocre at best.
The teams last RB with a 40+ yard run is Guice.

Robinson does a good job of getting hard yards but doesn't really make anyone miss or go for big gains.
I would sign one of the better backs to help the rookie QB out.

Hard to argue that. I'm good with letting AG walk. Tony Pollard would be a nice complement to BRob, but there are a few decent RBs out there.
