Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
I think you're right. I think Ramsey still has shell shock...LOL! Once he looks at the tape on Monday morning and he sees just how well the offensive line was protecting the QBs, he might loosen up a bit. I just want to see him take as many shots downfield during the preseason as possible. I believe we have the receivers this year who'll get open for the long bomb!

Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
Jesus Christ. One will one of you moderators start a poll. I'm very curious to document after the first preseason game how many and who of us would immediately bench ramsey. I dont care if he did go out there and literally shit himself, its only the VERY FIRST PRESEASON GAME. What the hell?? The guy did look shaky, and threw a pick, but other than that he was 8 for 12. Thats a better completion percentage than the other two QBs.
Ramsey was jumpy as hell in the NY game last year when he threw all the picks. But then when he was named the starter he looked collected and we won a few games under his leadership. We owned the Giants, who took it to us the first time we played them, and he was very efficient in all of his games last year. There's a little more pressure with him starting the season and there's alot of expectations on him this year. On top of which he's playing a bland game of football in the preseason. Some of you guys need to relax a little bit and have some patience. If this keeps up through the regular season, I may be one of the ones here calling to bench him, but this is THE VERY FIRST PRESEASON GAME. Lets not forget that. |

For those saying we're making excuses for Ramsey's play last night, that's not it at all. We're simply ANALYZING his performance. It's a simple NFL principle; when you have a strong running game things get a lot easier for your QB. Gibbs didn't even attempt to roll out a running game last night. That's not an excuse for Ramsey, it's an explanation for why he found the going so tough last night. WE ARE NOT GOING TO SEE AN OFFENSE LIKE THE COLTS. Let's get that through our minds right now. Moss and Patten are not here to catch bomb after bomb. They are here to keep 8 men out of the box, due to the threat their speed represents. Portis the one who is then supposed to take advantage of the 7 man fronts. I can guarantee you that is the plan. Gibbs will still focus on running the ball and keeping the chains moving with shorter passes. He just feels that with Moss and Patten threatening deep more often, it will open up more space underneath. Sure, Moss and Patten will be depended on for big plays on occasion. But they are not here to be Marvin Harrison and Reggie Wayne. Parts of Ramsey's performance bothered me, especially the underthrown interception. But he did connect on 8 of his 12 passes. If we actually tried to run the ball last night, I bet we would have put up some points. Let's not fret yet, it's too early. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
If I was just looking at this [1] preseason game I myself woule not be concerned.
The kid has had [4] years and that's the best he can do? Are you kidding me? I like the kid. I think his arm is strong but his "Head" and his "Gut Instinct" is weak. Sorry. I'll be pulling for Jason Cambell from this point on unless Patrick makes a 180 degree turn around. Jason stepped in there and looked sharp. I'll make the prediction that he will be the QB this year as we enter the Playoffs. The Playoffs?!?!?!?!?! Yes, the Playoffs this year. peace mike "You can call me Sammy, Mr. Baugh if yer nasty" - Sammy Baugh |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
What is important to note is that the protection was there. As long as that holds up, Ramsey well find a comfort zone and start finding his WR's.
Who else is excited about Gibbs adding the screen pass? Man, with Portis, it could go all the way at any time. It really adds a way to burn overzealous defenses. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
LOL wow ask and ye shall recieve. Thanks for the poll. GoSkins! i noticed the screen and do think that with the combination of Ramsey seeing his checkdown guys, screens and a better offensive line we'll have enough to improve over last year's performance. I don't mean to get so defensive, but I was actually excited about alot of what I saw yesterday. Antonio Brown looked decent, and I at least feel more comfortable about the backup QB situation. Maybe brunell will find his feet and become more comfortable behind center. I don't think by any means he should start, but at least I feel a little more comfortable about Gibbs's decision to keep him around.

Yeah man, not sure why you were defensive. I haven't suggest Ramsey be benched, only stating the obvious from what I saw last night. I do seem to remember posting more than once that I do realize it's just the first preseason game, but at the sametime, a fourth year player shouldn't be worried about nerves. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
I voted that the job is still his, but Ramseys supposed newfound confidence built up over the offseason needs to make an appearance during a live game soon. He was patting the ball way too much and I honestly don't remember seeing him set his feet on any of his throws. I and my family couldn't believe the zip Brunell had on his throws and were wondering where the hell was that last year? And I know it's just the first game and it was against the back ups of the back ups, but Campbell looked extremely poised in the pocket and put nice touch on a majority of his passes. All I know is that it was nice to see 300+ yards in the passing column for the skins for the first time in a while that I can remember. Did anyone else watch the broadcast being down on abc and hear that Gibbs had told them that only 7 running plays were in the gameplan for last night's game? Gibbs sure doesn't want to show the zone blocking and other new plays until it matters does he, lol.

Honestly you weren't really the one that had me fired up. Mr Quervo had a little to do with it, and when I went into VBchat after the game there were a few guys in there after Ramsey and Gibbs. Completely ready to throw in the towel on both of them. It just seems that there are teams who have QBs who do poorly from time to time and they stick by their guy and great things happen... Anyone ever watch the NFL networks show on Brett Favre? He sucked when he got into the league. We as skins fans have seen wayy too many QB contraversies (I remember even I was pulling for tony banks to land the starting job a few years ago lmao) in recent years to want to start it up again after one preseason game, no matter what happened. And ramsey didnt do horrible against one of the league's best defenses. I think one of the reasons NO QB has done anything spectacular for us in like ten years is because they're uncomfortable with their jobs security. Fans and Media tend to make them that way, no matter what a coach tells them. So when we're on here and everywhere else calling for Campbell or Brunell to be the starter too soon, its almost like we as fans are shooting the team in the foot. I think the thing that bothered me so much about the situation was in the vbchat I looked at some of the guys' old posts. Some were talking about how bad the redskins were screwing over players, and others were basing assessments and assumptions on QBs based on anything but skill. (I'm not getting into that one). Those type of people just want to sit around and bitch, and when I get on my favorite site to talk with my redskin buddies about the first game of the year, (my first time to ever have that privelege, since I joined up after last year's season) benching ramsey and joe gibbs bashing over a preseason game is the last thing I expected or wanted to hear. I could have gone to a dallASS site for that. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
First let me say that I did not see all of the game yet, all that I was able to see was what the nfl network showed on there No Huddle program. I do remember watching when we threw over the middle to Betts and then the screen pass to Cartwright. At the time Ramsey was like 6 for 7, for 40 or 50 yards, with 1 int. I was dissappointed about the int but going 8 for 12 over all was still pretty good for not being in a game time situation since Jan. That is still a 67% completion percentage.
Someone mentioned that we can't afford for Ramsey to take weeks into the season to get over being nervous, and I agree so that is why we have 4 pre-season games. Also, another person stated that if Ramsey had taken all the snaps and what not at practice then why did he do so poorly? Well like most agree pre-season games are nothing more than practice, and I did see Ramseys int, he looked as if he was "practicing" on his "touch" throws. Now I know that Ramsey said that the ball came out wrong, but could it be that he was tring to get the feel for when a "touch" throw is needed versus a bullet pass... Remember, this whole "touch" pass idea is fairly new to Ramsey, who knows maybe he would not have thrown the int if he had tried to put a hole threw his reciever with the ball.... |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
I'm not worrying about our play at all right now, if we suck in all 4 preseason games then YES, but right now, NO 'cus we are just getting the rust off.
Moss/Patten haven't had much game experience in our system yet, so Ramsey and Co. will have to play a bit more to get "comfortable" with them. Gibbs hekld back the running game and we all know that aint gonna happen during the reg. season. The D was missing a handful of starters and we all know Ade Jimoh isn't gonna be starting (or wearing a Skins jersey much longer if he continues the way he plays). Campbell threw and INT and fumbled, so he didn't have as good a game as many are saying. After hearing about the Rex Grossman injury it threw up a nightmare scenario for me ... what if Ramsey broke a leg or something and we then had to head into the season with Brunell as the starter, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!! He may turn out to play well, but I just wouldn't be comfortable. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
I didn't see the game so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I'm assuming Ramsey went up against the Carolina first string defense, which should be one of the top units in the entire league this season. I'm not sure how many different coverage looks they were giving him, but again I'm assuming they threw a few things at him and weren't 100% vanilla.
He finished 8/12 with an INT, sounds like a lot of dump offs and he wasn't able to connect on any deep stuff. Not a great beginning to the preseason but considering the quality of the defense he was facing, it could have been much worse. It also doesn't sound like Gibbs was showing much offensively and didn't try to run the ball much at all. I think we need to consider these things when evaluating his overall performance. I've read that the protection was good, and I think if we take anything positive away from this game it should be the solid protection and the fact we had no major injuries. It was the first preseason game, there's still alot of work to do obviously, but as we say every preseason you have to keep things in perspective. Championships aren't won or lost in August. There's no sense in freaking out... but overall I must say the general feeling on this forum is pretty calm compared to other forums I've read. At least we don't have multiple threads going about how the sky is falling, Ramsey needs to be benched/traded, Campbell should start, etc. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
hit hit the nail on its head matt, Ramsey was accurate but threw the ball short
What i felt was that he was scared and some of us agreed, it just seemed to me like he was worried about getting sacked, and who could blame him after 2003, but by now he must know how good his line played, to bad you didn't see it. I MEAN GOSH! our line was so good, all of the QBs felt like running the ball atleast once, they had such big holes, it was rediculous. The o-line would push the d-line out and there would be a gaping hole down the middle. and when the LBs blitzed our RBs filled in nicly, we didn't run so that hurt Ramsey in his ability to make production. Some have said that Ramsey didn't look good-- i agree but i am completely against the notion of making brunnell the number one which most of us are Some have felt the season doesn't look good-- i disagree. just because when portis gets behind a line like that he will be picking up huge gains. GUESS WHAT NO 8 IN THE BOX!!! They gave moss and patten respect. The worst positions were CB and QB, both are fixable. Cb expecially because Springs didn't play and Ade sucked! OUR line again has so much potential, it can be tops in the league. The commentators said that Ray Brown said that Dockery could be one of the best in the league. YOu have to respect what Brown says and it is so hard for us to judge individual linemen. Dockery threw Jenkins, just tossed him. the rest of our line played well, janson had the only boo boo with a holding call |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
Yeah seeing dockerey manhandle jenkins was a big posotive. I dotn think they ever did any stunts against our first string line, though, and if I recall thats where dockery has the most trouble. We'll see if he can keep it up through the rest of the season. I know we had high expectations for him when we brought him in, but his play has been pretty weak up to this point. I hope he turns it around. Maybe Ill stop trading him in madden lol.

Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
Perspective, people. Washington lost a preseason game to the Panthers.
But, Dallas lost a preseason game to the CARDINALS. And, New York lost a preseason game to the BROWNS. And, Philadelphia has their own problems. Of course you would rather have won - but we probably shouldn't bury the season yet. |

[/QUOTE] Ramsey stayed in for nearly the entire first half...long after Carolina had pulled their starters. The point was that Ramsey just didn't look comfortable, and I personally feel the starting QB should show some sense of being comfortable. He looked "rushed" when he wasn't. Yeah, most of those passes were to the dump off receivers. On a side note, both Mark Brunell and Jason Campbell played quite well. |
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
We didn't have our full offense in....as many pointed out we didn't do much with our running game which will help to set up the pass. But Ramsey continues to hold on to the ball too long..........Brunell was going against 2nd stringers.......so it's too early to start a QB controversey.............I loved our shotgun plays.........
|
Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
Ramsey disappointed me but he is the starter i don't want Brunnell in there. Campbell can actually throw outs and he is far more accurate and deliberate in his decision making thats crazy. he is a rookie Ramsey just don't have it. I know its the first preseason game I was just looking for Ramsey to pretend like he knew what he was doing he is still trying his heart out but he just don't have the talent. It's put up or shutup Joe Gibbs can't go into the season with a rookie QB but if Ramsey looks stupid the first half of the Chicago game bring in Brunnell and the same for Dallas we might have to pull him in and out. it dont make no sense how idiotic he looked. I dont care about what player is playing against scrubs just execute the offense he had plenty of time he just got two left feet.

Re: Ramsey and Brunell Trading Places???
I voted Ramsey - gotta stick with him until/unless the season's lost or you've lost all credibility as a coach and organization. Players just want to be treated fairly and given their shots on the field. A multi-season QB competition benefits no one, least of all the front office. Campbell will have his shot down the road.
