Exactly and I am almost offended you'd say that the reason he isn't playing is because of his contract. That's just ridiculous to me. It is clearly a performance issue.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm

Sooner or later Lavar is going to see the field. One of our LB's will go down, and Lavar will get to step up. He needs to be ready. I expect that Williams sees Lavar as an underachiever and wants him to hone his game.

With that said, I still believe that Lavar gives us the best chance to get the one thing we are missing this year. Turnovers. The defense just isn't getting enough pressure on the QB's and Lavar can change that. I would like to see Williams find a way to get one of his best playmakers on the field, even if he doesn't like everything about the way he plays.

Lavar needs to stay ready, it's a long season and he will get his chance.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
I remember seeing Gregg Williams pulling LaVar out of Dallas game after just 2 plays. Williams made some kind of "cut-throat" gesture to say "You are done playing." I just get the feeling that LaVar is unable to play within Williams' scheme.
Kevikazi - I did not see that during the Dallas game, but if this is in fact the case it would explain a lot of things as towards why LaVar is not playing.

I listened to the AM980 broadcast, and I was impressed by LaVar and how he is handling things. I hope he has the fortitude to make it through this, in the end he will be a better player if he can fit into Williams' scheme.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm
IMO Lavar knows why, he's just having a tough time admitting that it's his own inability to play within Williams system thats keeping him on the bench, probably whats going on is the coaching staff is waiting to hear from Lavar with his actions on the field, and that will start in practice, and he'd better learn to change, because I don't see any scenerio other than injuries that Williams will back down and play the guy unless Lavar changes his mind set.
Bingo! Could not agree more. Anyone who has ever played team sports at any level (especially football) knows: 1) The coach rules. 2) any probs with that, refer to rule # 1. It is a dictatorship. Football coach is the captain of the ship and rules with an iron fist-no questions. Problems with that, get you plenty of 'Pine time"......... Even though Arrington comes off all about the team, and I think he means basically well. He uses WAY to many "ME" phrases.

I love the skins winning but I detect the distinct odor of bs surrounding the Arrington situation cuz there is absolutely no way holdman or clemons or even the 2 combined can match the playmaking ability of Arrington. The guys on the Comcast post game show they were mentioning that Holdman's name hadn't even been mentioned during the game and almost never seems to be around the ball and looking back at a lot of the footage they're right. This just seems like it's gonna get worse before it gets better but I hope I'm wrong.

The Washington Times is already coming up with trade scenarios, LOL.

I agree with whoever said it's a long season, LaVar is going to get his chance again.

Maybe the team is gearing up to move on from LaVar and get out from under his monster contract. Or maybe Williams and co. are simply satisfied with the current lineup and LaVar hasn't earned his job back yet.

Either way it's hilarious how the media is running with this. I think we all just need to stay patient, hell LaVar is and he's the one that's directly effected by all this.

Wait,
if we cut Lavar after this year, doesnt that makes we take a huge cap hit?

our salary cap was starting to look pretty good.. finally gettting trotter off this year for the most part (he might still have a little left)

Re: Rumors

"if cut, a signing bonus of more than $11 million would accelerate and count against the 2006 salary cap"

Wow,

although i gues we take a 9 million cut for coles this year.
If we cut him after the season, then finally 2007,
our cap could be in really good shape?

GoSkins! 10-04-2005 09:11 AM

Re: Rumors

Next year Lavar is slated to make $10,542 so if his release fee is $13,200 then we end up taking a 3 million dollar hit (right?). After the June 1st date, we could spread that out.

I would hate to see Lavar go, but financially it is possible.

Schneed10 10-04-2005 09:21 AM

Re: Rumors

Arrington would be a big hit to the salary cap in 2006 whether he was on the team or off the team. According to Canuck's cap sheets, he's scheduled to count $12 million against the 2006 cap anyway. If releasing him hits us with a cap hit of $11 million in 2006, then that's actually a $1 million savings.

It's hard to know if these numbers are actually right. But one thing's for sure, if we release Arrington in 2006, he's not going to kill the cap like Coles did. He's going to kill our cap whether he's here or not. And if the coaches feel like they're better off with other guys in the lineup, then they might as well cut Arrington loose and clear the cap space for the future.

Schneed10 10-04-2005 09:25 AM

Re: Rumors

And there is nothing wrong with Warrick Holdman so far. We're ranked 5th in overall defensive yards per game. We've given up an average of 12 points per game. Most importantly, we're 3-0. And as Daseal mentioned, he has not been making mistakes. He's cheap and he plays within the system. He's the perfect fit into a no-name defense.

I like what's being built. It seems like the defense is largely going to be made up of 2 excellent and highly paid corners, a stud safety in Taylor (we should pay for him because his range provides a ton of flexibility), but otherwise it will basically be low-cost system guys. That's nice, it saves cap room for your offense.

Schneed10 10-04-2005 09:27 AM

Re: Rumors

I like Lavar for his big-play ability, but I don't like how he's not very disciplined. He tries to do too much and ends up giving up big plays. He'll make big plays, but he'll also give up big plays. Overall, he's not worth $68 million by a long shot.

Schneed10 10-04-2005 09:41 AM

Re: Rumors

One last thought (too many posts for me in a row, I'm talking to myself, LOL).

Next season Arrington is due a roster bonus of like $7 million. To me, this makes him very tradeable. To a new team, a $7 million roster bonus could easily be renegotiated into a $7 million signing bonus, an amount many teams would perceive to be a relative bargain for Lavar Arrington. The team would probably be very happy to pay $7 million up front for him and keep the rest of his contract largely intact.

Just have to wonder if Arrington would go for that. If he would demand more of a signing bonus, then it would make him very hard to trade. Teams would probably be wary of shelling out $12-15 million in a signing bonus to him. We could still try to trade him without a renegotiation, but I don't think teams would be willing to take on a $7 million roster bonus without converting it to a signing bonus. A roster bonus would hit the 2006 cap all at once. If it was renegotiated to a signing bonus, the cap hit would be spread out.

Should be interesting how it plays out.

scowan 10-04-2005 09:42 AM

Re: Rumors

The only thing that I wonder about surrounding Lavar is that Gibbs continues to be upset with the Skins turnover ratio and I wonder if Lavar might not be a guy who could cause a game changing hit that leads to a fumble or something and shorten the field for our offense. Our team is playing great defense, but we aren't getting sacks, INTS or Fumbles. I think the skins have only one INT in 3 games. That is really terrible if you think about it. Hopefully the skins will stop the Broncos running game this week an make Plummer throw more, because the more he throws the better off we will be.

irish 10-04-2005 09:48 AM

Re: Rumors

I agree that LA could be that big hit guy that would create a game changing turnover however it seems that the coaching staff is not willing to standby and let LA screw up plays on the chance for 1 big hit.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm

I am absolutely positive that this is not an issue between Gibbs and Williams. And I'm equally positive that Gregg Williams could care less if LaVar Arrington ever starts another game for the Redskins. Absent injuries forcing the situation, I believe that Arrington will be a spot player for the Skins as long as Williams is the defensive coordinator. And Williams will be the defensive coordinator as long as the defense is sound and he isn't moved up to a head coaching job somewhere. The only way he puts Arrington in the starting line-up and leaves him there is for Gibbs to order him to do that and I don't think that's gonna happen.

As I tried to portray in my "Imaginary Exercise" above, Joe Gibbs has no real motivation to overrule his defensive coordinator unless the defense comes apart at the seams. It hasn't and it will take more than one injury or two to make that happen.

People here have wondered why LaVar isn't getting the snaps that they believe he has earned. Here's the problem with that line of thinking:

Joe Gibbs and Gregg Williams are the coaches now. What has LaVar earned during the tenure of this coaching staff? The answer is - - virtually nothing.

If you want to credit him with earning snaps because of what he did while Norv and Marty and OBC were here, then the starting line-up would alo include Champ Bailey, Fred Smoot and Patrick Ramsey. It doesn't because those "credits" don't carry over because those coaches aren't here to hand out playing time so all those past deeds - on losing teams in case you forgot.

Some players achieve so much for a franchise that they are indeed immune from being benched at some point in their career. John Elway comes to mind; Brett Favre certainly fits that description; Dick Butkus was irreplaceable; Terry Bradshaw couldn't be benched after 4 Super Bowls. LaVar Arrington is a physically gifted football player, but he ain't anywhere near that status yet and is not likely ever to get there.

So, now Arrington has to convince Gregg Williams that he (LaVar Arrington) can be more productive as a LB in Williams' defensive system than Warrick Holdman and Chris Clemons and - for all I know - Zak Keasey too. I'm not saying Keasey is the better LB, but maybe Gregg Williams thinks he is? I don't read minds so I don't know...

Re: Rumors

The LaVar thing is confusing. The man says he's 100% and ready to go. I love the Redskins, always will, but I just dont see how not playing him is the best thing. Joe was talking about our turnover ratio not being that good. When LaVar is healthy he is a game changer. Sacks, forced fumbles, ints, he can do it all, as well as lead on the field. This guy is the kind of person everyone wants on their team. He is loyal, more loyal than I have seen in a long time. If we lose LaVar next year is will be very disappointing. imagine a healthy LaVar, Marcus Washington, Griffin, Springs, and Taylor on the field at the same time. WOW, thats a lot of playmakers. LaVar would be good for double digit sacks, a few forced fumbles and maybe an INT. He can change games. I believe they are keeping him healthy to trade him in the offseason. But hey, I guess we havn't won with him on the field. I just want to win, but I also want #56 there when we do start winning.

Basically that he needs to get back in the game and do what he's asked.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm

People its personal. It always is with this organization. LaVar is being setup to be released in the offseason before July so we won't have to pay him the 6.5 mill he is due then. He is being frozen out. Simple as that. The PR slant will talk about his decline in June when we cut him. Soon after--he will sign with the Steelers for economical Rooney dollars and shine once again.
All I hear about is how he likes to freelance and is out of posiition. Are you telling me that he freelances more than Sean Taylor? And is prone to giving up more big plays like Sean Taylor? They are both of the same attacking mold--yet Taylor is starting and LaVar is sitting. I guess Sean Taylor is a better Redskin off the field right???
The bottom line is Gregg Williams and LaVar don't mix right now. Williams can talk about how he wants players to buy into his system--but you can't tell me that LaVar is harder to handle than Sean Taylor.

"Either way it's hilarious how the media is running with this. I think we all just need to stay patient, hell LaVar is and he's the one that's directly effected by all this.
One nuanced point in this discussion is that the media is running with this and we all "Love" Lavar so much b/c he has been rammed down our throats for the last 4-5 years as "THE FACE" of the Redskins. The Mighty Synder pr machine has been in high gear over Lavar since he was drafted.

In all of these crazy up and down seasons we've always at least had Lavar to fall back on. I mean the man put the final nail in the coffin of G-aikman's career. I like Lavar, he is a beast on the field and I want him to play but I think this is kinda ironic that all the posters and jerseys and the team continually saying "Lavar, Lavar, Lavar" is backfiring on them to a degree. I mean the fans all love Lavar and they now want to know why the guy they love is no longer playing and the team keeps saying "Please don't notice the man behind the curtain!, Look we are 3-0"

BTW - Question. What are the cap ramifications if we do trade Lavar after this season? Can another team inherit /assume his cap hit from us or are we forever on the hook for x number of dollars for him depending on whether we release him before or after July.

I'm curious as to what prompts this certainty? Maybe I'm just out of the loop here, (and I know I haven't seen him in practice or anything) but has LA really done anything that we, you or anyone else knows of to merit being benched no matter what his capabilities are? We're not even talking about realizing potential, we're talking about a perrinial pro-bowler, who has been the leader of our Defense and the Face of the Team...probably the best OLB in the league today.

Everyone talks about him freelancing, but what the hell man, back a couple of years ago, someone had to go make a f'ing tackle. God knows even with Trotter, Armstead, Wilkinson, Stubblefield, Bailey, Gardner, Lang.... we sucked on Defense and he came up with big plays when we needed him to.

I refuse to believe that its beyond him to comprehend or physically preform what is asked of him. ST (even though I love the guy) can't even say his goddamn alphabet, and LA is a chess player.

I'd like to think that it only has to do with him not being able to put in the time in the offseason and its only a matter of time before he works his way back into the lineup. Everyones making it out to be a personal thing, but he has never let anything contractual come in the way of his playing/practicing, and he seems to have an all class attitude no matter what comes his way. (True Redskin Behavior?) He was excited about being signed for the rest of his career to this city when we were a joke of a franchise and other players were crawling their way out.

GW didn't start Taylor at the beginning of last season because he missed time in the offseason, even though Taylor looked like a super-stud in the preseason. I'm seriously hoping its the same type situation and that he gets the chance to earn his job back and does so soon.

This whole situation is really starting to piss me off. If he is not playing so that they can cut him because of the cap I will not watch a game the rest of the season. That is a piss poor way to deal with a contract situation. He has served his time with all the changes in personel on this team and always played his heart out no matter what our record was and now one of the most athletic OLB's in the league is sitting on the bench. Don't get me wrong Holdman is playing good but there is no telling what LaVar could be doing. If they are trying to cut him for cap issues then they should give him time on the field and at least make sure they are making the right choice. If he plays bad then pull him and even ask him to restructure or take a paycut. If he is not recovered no one will trade for him with his contract so big and if they cut him he won;t get the money he was going to get if he was the player everyone thought he was going to be, but if he is 100% healthy, like he said he is and no one has said him sitting is a health issue, there is no doubt in my mind he would again he a pro bowler.

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm

Their not going to cut him that would excalate his signing bonus of 11mil, to hit us in 2006, if we trade him we only get hit with a 2 mil in 2006, then the rest in 2007, so forget about releasing him, aint happening. Lavar still should have pretty good trade value, I would imagine there are still teams out there who haven't figured out that Lavar is vastly overated, and grossly overpaid.

I think we're on the hook for the signing bonus, if the roster bonus is for being on the redskins roster, then we probably don't have to worry about that... the next team gets his current contract without the SB money and whatever bonuses the trade negates. though usually after a trade, a new contract is written, so the player ends up with a lot of money...

Re: Lavar on 980 @ 4pm

I dont blame him for being unhappy, he is one of the best defensive players on the team and I think he should be on the feild. Obviously, for reasons I dont know, hes not. If he honestly has no clue why he is not on the feild, and he dosent go up to a coach and ask "Coach, what do I have to do to play more." Then its just as much on him as the coach. I dont know, I hope he is on the field consistantly in a couple weeks. He's too good to take up time on the bench.

i think it might be holdman's job to lose right now, not the other way around... and others will trade for him, because they'll get the contract with all the signing bonus etc removed, so it'll be much cheaper and he can be cut at any time on that team with NO cap hit, unless a new contract is made.

LaVar may make few spectacular plays but, one big play he's going to give up due to free-lancing will cost us a game. So your saying Lavar free lances too much, and Sean Taylor doesn't? Don't agree. Sean and Lavar are very similar. Lavar is a team first guy and will do whatever the coaches tell him. Both are game changers. I just don't buy the freelancing argument.
