Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
There ought to be a separate replay official in a dark booth up in the stadium, like they do for Hockey. My guess is having the ref try to do it himself under that "hood" leads to lots of blown calls and pressure to get it done quickly.
And I agree--they ought to pay the friggin refs and make them work all offseason to hone there skills. Why not? Are you telling me the NFL doesn't have the money to do so???
I actually like the idea of making the replay sort of similar to what college football has. The refs stand there with the head set on and wait for the booth up stairs to say good or no good. But we should still keep it the same in regards to the coaches being able to challenge the plays. That way, it keeps the refs out of the decision making regarding reviews. They are emotionally (even though they are not suppose to be) in the game. They are running around and no matter what the replay shows, they feel obligated at times to keep the play as it was originally called. |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
The NFL has the money to make the refs full time employees but they never will be because that would lead to an NFL referee union (like MLB) and all the problems that go along with dealing with a union.
That's my worry--but at some point owners have to feel that better refs make for a better league--if we miss the playoffs by a game, my guess is Danny Snyder will feel ok with a union, so long as the refs stop blowing calls! And #56Fanatic, I agree--if college can do it, the pros can as well--obviously the COllege folks looked at how the NFL was doing things and thought, hey, we've can do this better. |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
Yea, they say Ron Jaworski is coming on and agrees that we were not offsides and alstott was down. It would be interesting to see the replay of the x pt attempt again.
I like Jaworski. I would be interested to know what he says. If you can post the general interview content??? |

The league is wildly popular, the games are exciting, the TV ratings are good, and the stadiums are full, sounds like a good league to me. The nfl has to focus on keeping that ball rolling. Also full time refs will blow calls the same as part time refs. They are humans and humans make mistakes. This team will not miss or make the playoffs because of the refs, they will make it because they make plays and score ,more points than the other teams. Had the redskins done that on sunday we would not even be discussing this today. |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
I don't know about full-time refs, but I'd be completely in favor of refs getting sizeable fines for blowing a call.

If that policy was adopted, refs would never make any calls for fear of making a mistake and being fined. Thats the problem with the whole idea of review, it creates uncertainty in the refs minds and they either dont make calls for fear of being shown to be wrong or they dont over-rule incorrect calls for fear of taking the ruling authority off the field. Like I said, review needs to be scrapped. Let the refs make their on field judgements (right or wrong) and move on. |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
I heard last night that the tapes were reviewed by the league and the results :
Alstott did NOT score did not appear to be a push of Galloway to force him out of bounds the center picked the ball up early, we were not offsides on the blocked EP and TB was not called for an illegal motion penalty on a long pass that turned into a TD. there are 4 calls that did not go our way. for a total of 17 points if you add them all up. I was arguing the point yesterday that we could not blame the loss on the refs, especially to two point conversion. However, when you add up what was wrong with the calls made, I have switched my opinion. The refs cost us some points and in the end : probably the game. I have never been a person to sit and blame refs for losing games, but 17 freakin points!!!!! come on that is rediculous.
And, that was the very same sorry officiating crew that messed up that game between Cleveland & Pittsburgh last year. It's just too bad that even when it's demonstrated that they (blew it) it still dosen't have any effect on the outcome of the game. Where's the JUSTICE? |

I watched frame by frame and the only thing I could really see was the centers head move and his arms seemed to move back a split second before the 2 cbs came off the line but I still understand how they could have called the guys offsides cuz at full speed that's what it looked like. |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
I really do not think HOF Coach Gibbs should have any regrets for his comments to the NFL. The calls did not lose this game.
Three turnovers did. :dallas: :dallas: |
Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
I think instant replay should be done away with permanently. It has not done what it was supposed to do, eliminate bad calls and controversy, and never will. Just let the refs on the field make the call, right or wrong, and move on.
Hard to argue with this line of thinking. All replay does is create more situations for the refs to make bad calls. My only issue with this is that I think replay CAN work ina fashion to help referees and not be seen as workign againstt hem as it is now. |
I think you're taking him a little too literal when he says "make the league better". It seems a little short-sighted to say the league is sucessful so they shouldn't do anything to help it improve the onfield product.
Also full time refs will blow calls the same as part time refs. They are humans and humans make mistakes.
True but again the League ought to do whatever they can to eliminate bad calls.
This team will not miss or make the playoffs because of the refs, they will make it because they make plays and score ,more points than the other teams. Had the redskins done that on sunday we would not even be discussing this today.
If we miss the playoffs by a game or maybe Tampa wins a tie breaker then would you say the refs didn't cost us the playoffs? We "lost" by 1 point and we were conservatively screwed by 9 points. The Skins did what they had to do to win the game. They didn't play great and didn't finish the Bucs off but they did enough to win by at at least 8 points and the refs were able to affect the score by at least 9 points against us. They have at least as much culpability in the loss as any Redskins does. |

100% right. The refs can't be making decisions based on anything but what happens in front of their eyes. Emotion needs to be removed as mucha s possible. I don't think the current system allows for emotion to be removed as fully as it could be either though. You might right about scrapping the whole deal if they can't get it right soon. |
