Re: 2011 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7
Shanny must either be satisfied with the quality of the OL or be getting ready to move some veterans in because he drafted a bunch of WRs and RBs but nobody really for the offensive trenches
|
Re: 2011 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7
I liked the draft overall with the exception of addressing the offensive line, particularly finding a replacement for Rabach.

Re: 2011 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7
Just terrific. I love everything about this draft. This is the competition you want between four young WRs if you include Austin.
Same goes for RBs, although I've seen Royster play a significant amount of games and I'd be shocked if he ends up on the final roster, but oh well. Kerrigan will be a stud, there's just no way you can argue that unless your name is Jamie Dukes and you're half retarded. Jenkins is a bonus, we weren't expecting to be able to pick up so many key players later in the draft and we still managed to get a guy who was rising later in the draft year. I see Jenkins being a very solid 3-4 DE. Not as good as Carriker, but certainly acceptable. |
Well I really hope they address the interior offensive line in FA. I really want Rabach gone, good dude but I'm tired of seeing get trucked over by Jay Ratliff
I have read a time or two that the SKins are expected to look to FA for experienced O-line help as quality Lineman are expected to be available and the Skins are in good shape cash-wise. AND it appears from their picks over the last couple of days that it may be true. ASS-KICKIN' draft for the Skins. I have forgotten what it is like to be interested in the draft....as we usually have so few picks. We filled some needs with quality guys that should be immediate starters, and got some guys that can help out in relief or at least create excellent competition in camp. Very excited about the upcoming season. We got much younger, and hopefully found a diamond or two in the rough in later rounds as well! HTTR Oh and BIG move choosing so many team leader and character guys. Blue collar workman players. The Pats/Steelers/Colts...etc have done ok with that philosophy. |

I have thought in my mind all along that I have no problem with Team Building this year shoreing up the many area's that are depleted (and get by with whover the best we can get at QB....for now) and working in earnest in 2012 for the francise man. Perhaps that is what they are doing?
I think the most encouraging thing about this entire draft is the fact that they passed on taking a QB. We have both Shanahans, two guys who build offenses and know the importance of a QB to running that offense, and yet they passed on all the QB's. I think both of them recognized that every single QB in this draft was severely overrated due to the lack of talent, and that in addition to being overrated teams would over reach for them. That combined with the fact that the QB pool for next year looks to be much, much better and they obviously decided that they would wait for next year and get their guy instead of wasting a pick that we obviously need in other places on a QB that wasn't really going to be their guy. Despite how much I love what we did in this years draft, I think next year we give up whatever we have to to get Andrew Luck. A lot of mediocre teams took a QB this year, and with any luck one of them will be picking first and Luck will be ours for the taking. We both saw what you said - we were just highlighting other information which was contradicting your naysaying attitude. As I said earlier, the statement you referred to was clearly a word error because everything else in the report was made him out to be a NT. "Strengths: Neild is tall enough with a thick lower half. Plays with good leverage and clogs up running lanes. Delivers a powerful initial punch and possesses very heavy active hands to shed blocks. Flashes a powerful bull rush. High effort kid that fights to the whistle and finishes plays. Weaknesses: Not the quickest kid off the ball and poor foot speed prevents him from making plays in the backfield. Will not be able to play nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme. Lacks a repertoire of pass rushing counter moves and does not have a closing burst to get after the quarterback. Will not make tackles in space. " He is a space eater who clogs the middle ... So he isn't a quick penetrator, we don't need him to penetrate, chase down plays or "make plays in space". In this scheme, clearly Rak and Kerrigan are there for the sacks not the NT. Tell me "genius", why can't he play NT in the NFL? What else in the analysis supports that conclusion? Or is your entire analysis/conclusion based on that one sentence? |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7
I really believe that the analysis report should have said he won't be a penetrating NT in a 3-4. I think that's ok, because we want a guy who stuffs the middle and allows our LB's (ie Orakpo) to utilize their speed and power.
Maybe that line just wasn't clear enough, but to take it as a repudiation of everything else written, or as a rationale to downgrade the pick seems to me to reflect the type of snap to judgement thinking that the Skins under Snyder/Cerrato showed. Don't look at a guy cuz analysts don't see elite disciplines. This is a pick that when you look deeper, you find a team leader, a dedicated worker, and a guy who should fit our team, not the all-madden team. |

Every other analysis that I have seen has Neild pegged precisely as a nose tackle. The opinion which you quoted is just one opinion. I'm much more excited that we got Neild than I am that we got Gomes. |
Re: 2011 NFL Draft: Rounds 4-7
it also could be a typo where the writer meant 4-3, because the context of the paragraph JR just copied would be more often associated with a 4-3 DT, or a 3-4 DE.

I think Cleveland will be deeply involved in the Luck Lottery, barring either a McCoy break out year, or a Luck meltdown. Remember, they just got Atlanta's 1st, and 4th pick, plus theirs. They could offer 2 1sts and the next year 1st to whoever gets the first overall. (and with Baltimore and Pitt twice next year), chances are Cleveland's own pick will be top 15. |

To be honest, I dont care. McNabb, Beck, Grossman, Vince Young (who actually wouldnt be as bad as most people think. When he got his head back in the game, he had those Titans ballin at one point. He looked really good). It doesnt matter, because we have to get that Oline going, plus we need to get the rest of the offense around him going to, before we decide to get our QB of the future. CBS Sportsline.com showing us some love:
Washington Redskins Draft Grade: A Historically known for aggressively trading up in the draft, the Redskins took the opposite strategy in 2011, deftly moving down the board, picking up more selections and still addressing keys area of need. Having run a 3-4 defense for the past few seasons despite fielding a team largely built on 4-3 personnel, the Redskins added a prototypical edge-rusher in Ryan Kerrigan to pair with Brian Orakpo. While many characterized the Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year as strictly a 4-3 defensive end, Kerrigan actually projects better as an OLB as he doesn't use his hands particularly well, but has burst, agility and great instincts. The Redskins added a classic five-technique defensive end in Clemson's Jarvis Jenkins in the second round and addressed their need for receivers with size in Miami's Leonard Hankerson and Nebraska's Niles Paul in the third and fifth rounds. No head coach has enjoyed as much success with late-round running backs as Mike Shanahan, and he could have worked his magic again with Roy Helu (Nebraska) and Penn State's Evan Royster in the fourth and sixth rounds. Helu, in particular, is an ideal fit in a zone-scheme, as he can plant his foot and accelerate downhill explosively. In terms of adding multiple players who fit their scheme and will improve the overall talent of their club, no team was more effective this year than the Redskins. |
