Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Yes. Completion percentage is important. However, historically yards/pass attempt is a much more telling number. In that category, Kirk has been much less impressive (21st out of 32 - although he is ahead of Rodgers)
Passing yards per attempt is considered a basic, yet important statistic in football. Teams that win the passing yards per attempt battle almost always win, and players with a higher YPA are generally more successful. YPA includes the yardage in the air as well as the yards after catch provided by the receiver.

Passing yards per attempt is an important measure of quarterback value as to rank near the top of the leaderboard players must consistently produce completed passes with long yardage values and have a high completion percentage.
Player Passing Yards Per Attempt Statistics: 2015 NFL Season

Kirk completes a lot of short passes. It is how Gruden's scheme is designed. There were several deep shots designed for yesterday's game. Except for the one shot to Desean and the one to Roberts, I don't recall any other deep shots taken by him despite the several designed 7 step drops. Maybe the shot wasn't there and it was a good check down. Maybe he just doesn't pull the trigger. Dunno. Would love to see the All-22.

AGAIN - Still best option. Still likely best option for next year.

Yep, and with Djax in the lineup. Kirk is averaging 8.9 YPA. The best in the NFL.

It's a team game, like I said. You also can compare his Pass Per Attempt, which is better then Rogers, Rivers, Brady, Both Mannings.

So..... Yea

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Yup. D. Jax is a game changer. KC benefits from that - a lot. (BTW - It's 8.46, not 8.9; 124 atts / 1,024 yds. Still would rank him 3rd out of 31). Without D. Jax, KC's yds/attempt plummets to 6.5. Beating out only Nick Foles and Luck and putting him 28th out of 31.

So ... yea

It is a team game, but the title of this thread is "Who is Kirk Cousins?" I would suggest that he is neither the 8.4 guy or the 6.5 guy, but that he is pretty much right in the middle of that - and, at 7.5, he would be in the 13th/14th out of 31 range.

AGAIN - Still best option. Still likely best option for next year.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

To me, it's really interesting to look at his Rating over the last six games. Away, against very, very good defenses he tossed up some of his worst games. Then, followed them at home against lesser teams with some stellar games - including his two best ratings of the year.

@ Jets: 57.9 - worst of the year. [Jets' "Average Rating Against" = 81.6; 5th best in the NFL]
v. TBay: 124.7 - 2nd best of the year (You like that?)[ARA = 98.5; 23rd]
@ N.E.: 64.8 - 2nd worst of the year [ARA = 82.8; 9th]
v. New O.: 158.3 - best of the year (I like that!) [ARA = 115.9; 32nd]
@ Carolina: 89.4 - Right in the middle, sixth worst or sixth best; [ARA = 68.7; 1st]
v. Giants: 114.4 - fourth best. [ARA = 92.3; 18th]

2015 NFL Team Passing Stats - National Football League - ESPN

The real anomaly is the Carolina game where his rating was significantly higher than the average allowed by the Panthers - the best ARA defense in the NFL.

Like I said, interesting and all part of the picture. To me, it shows inconsistency. To Kirk's Kool-Aid Klub, I am sure it shows consistent improvement or, alternatively, nothing at all.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

So ... based on past teams and performance, and comparing it to upcoming teams, looks to me like Kirk is due for at least three more good to very good games, one clunker and one toss-up.

v. Dallas - 16th best defensive ARA: KC should have a very good game at home.
@ Chicago - 19th: This is the toss-up. KC should have a good game, but it's an away game ...
v. Buffalo - 10th: This will be the test of the "Great Home Game" stretch. KC due for a clunker based on D ranking, but it's a home game ...
@ Phil - 20th: If they don't win the Chicago game, this will be the first away game victory.
@ Dallas - 16th: ... and this will be the 2nd (or 3rd). KC should close out the regular season strong.

More and more, I am looking at the Chicago game as the test of "Who is Kirk Cousins?"

I was a Colt McCoy guy. I still am. And I wasn't pleased with all of Cousins struggles at first. I was even down on him. But what I've seen from him the last four games has been phenomenal. Cousins has played really well and he's improving and maturing into a solid answer at quarterback.

Hahahahaha. Dont worry JR when you are ready we will welcome you into the Captain Kirk fan club.
Edit: in all honesty I have been maintaining that KC is quite suitable to lead a team to the promised land, which of course should be the goal of any NFL QB. I believe what this guy is doing with the injuries, lack of a run game, and through most games this season - a not so good D is very very promising. I believe once SM builds a better "team" that this guy will shine. I do not believe he is a Grossman or anything even close to that. I believe he - over these next 5 games will ascend to JR's level of belief. I do not think he is a hall of famer like Brady or Rodgers or Brees will be. I do believe he is capable of winning a championship for us. I believe he is going to go down as one of the best QB's to dawn the B&G. All of this while emerging from the ashes of one of the great quarterback debacles in history in a town starving for a quarterback like no other.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
rocnrik, great. Won NFC player of the week twice. Yay. However, bottom line, to date, he has roughly as many INT's and fumbles as TD passes. Just off the top of my head, an elite QB has about a 3:1 / TD:TO ratio. A good QB a 2:1 ratio. An average QB has about a 1:1 ratio.

I am not going to repeat past arguments about KC and his ceiling. Nothing this year has changed my perception of him as being consistently inconsistent. I believe he has reached his ceiling. He can win with a good team around him and when he hits on most cylinders.

If he puts a string of six games in a row with a 2:1 or better TD/TO ratio, I will be convinced he has taken a step. I fully expect, however, that he will continue his ~ 1:1 ratio.

Kirk's TD/TO ratio were:

2012 - 4/4 (3 games; 3 INT's)
2013 - 4/10 (5 games; 7 INT's)
2014 - 10/11 (6 games; 9 INT's)
2015 - 15/13 (11 games; 10 INT's)

Teams can win with numbers like these, but not consistently. To me, and to be a better than average QB, over the long run you have to score twice as much as you turn the ball over.

Again, I still believe he is the best option at this point and likely next year.
i am on the fence with Cousins . . . i see his struggles but do see consistent improvement from him, which gives me room to hope . . . so by your comment, in his last 5 games he has a 12 TD to 5 Turnover or 2.4/1 . . . that is above a good QB standard by your terms no?

see:

week 7 - 4 to 1 (3 passing, 1 rushing) - 1 fumble
week 8 - bye
week 9 - 1 to 1 (1 passing) - 1 interception
week 10 - 4 to 0 (4 passing)
week 11 - 1 to 3 (1 passing) - 1 interception, 2 fumbles
week 12 - 2 to 0 (1 passing, 1 rushing)

Total last 5 weeks: 12 TD to 5 Turnovers

when it comes to the Skins right now...Cousins been consistent enough the second half of the season, but not the run game. We really the run game to rebound...stop the matt jones fumbling, Alfmo needs to be better hitting hole and getting production with his opportunities and Chris Thompson needs to get healthier and needs more opportunities as well. Oline needs to be more consistent as well.

To me the Cousins talk is kinda dead at this point....

I agree. The running game could make a hell of a difference and Cousins has been playing without one for awhile.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

The run game had a semi-resurgence against the Giants. It still wasn't very good, but I think the success of the passing game helped open up some holes that might not have been there before.

The TD to Desean, the screen pass to Matt Jones. Those will change a defense's approach in a hurry. The Eagles used to slice up a defense with those delayed screen passes in the McNabb/Westbrook era. They were so good at drawing extra defenders in to chase the QB and he'd toss it right to the RB who was positioned in a vacated space.

To be completely honest, Cousins has been a surprise with his improving play...but I didn't expect this from the ground game. Im really disappointed with Alfmo's play...he doesn't look confident and doesn't hit the hole well. When he gets the ball hesitates and kinda looks around. Im equally disappointed with Matt Jones ball security...enough of the fumbling. BUT his running style is freakin great. If he wasn't such a fumbler, he would be the lead back by now. Thompson his improved with his time here...I actually would be ok with Thompson getting some more reps...more of Alfmos.

The absolute killer on the run game is Leributthole getting overmatched at center...Guy doesn't/cant play with leverage down there...we need to upgrade Center in the offseason in the worst way.

lol, Leributthole

I have also been very disappointed in the backs. Jones has potential but how can you trust him during a key stretch where you're trying to lock up 1st place.

I know this gets away from McCloughan's trenches-first mentality, but the thought has crossed my mind that Leonard Fournette would look great in Burgundy & Gold.

But that's the fan in me speaking, I'd want McCloughan to do what he thinks is right.

Scot McCloughan also comes from Seattle, a run-first team with an elite RB in Lynch (at least before this season). While he is a trenches guy, Scot may also see the potential in having an elite RB; esp if Cousins continues to work out and the team doesn't need to invest on a QB with a high pick.

If Callahan stays on, I imagine he will get a Center as a gift in the draft. My guess is many a fans will be screaming we took the guy too early, but Callahan will know who he wants, and SM will buy into it (after due diligence) hook line and sinker.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I am happy to see Cousins improvement over the year. I believe it may have been Joe Theismann who has been preaching that this is really Cousins' "rookie year" meaning his first true season as starting QB. He has yet to have an off-season where he is the guy, and it really has been an uphill battle for him in terms of getting reps / practice, etc..

I think next year might be totally different with Cousins having an entire off-season to prepare as the starter. I am no expert but I believe Cousins can be the franchise QB here. He seems to fire up the players and seems well-liked by his team-mates and all of his coaches, something that RG3 didn't have. Cousins just being on the field seems to get everybody fired up and super competitive. It also doesn't hurt that he is a genuine, down-to earth, good person, who is always supportive of everyone.

One thing I really like about him is how honest he is about his mistakes and shortcomings. He has no problem blaming himself for poor throws, poor plays, etc..

I hope this guy is the QB here for the next 10-12 years....

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Looking back at this QB saga, KC has really overcome the odds. He's had to deal with not being drafted as a starter and sitting behind Griffin. Only getting spot starts and was up and down, he got benched last year and was third team. Didn't even dress. What did he do? Made himself better this off season but still had to compete to be the 2. He beats out McCoy and then beats out Griffin as well. He has earned everything the hard way. Nothing was handed to him. Whether you like him or not, you have to respect him and the way he goes about his business.

Cousins is going to be a fantastic QB for many years ..the question is will it be in Washington or not. i have been a Cousins supporter for a long time even when he got benched for bad play. He has that calming influence in the huddle ..he is not some head case that will get into trouble with off field antics. This is the first time in many years I have some hope that the Skins are on the right path .

I for one like true fact that the possible QB of the future of the Redskins is a man of faith. not sure what the negative side of this could possibly be. Remember Joe Gibbs was and still is a man of Great Christian faith.

Yeah that's the key. Religion is like a penis, many people have one but it's not a problem unless you take it out and wave it in everybody's face.

Cousins doesn't put it out there. There was a great long form essay on SI.com yesterday about him, it talks about his upbringing as the son of a pastor, but that's not Cousins advancing any kind of religious agenda, he's simply answering questions about how he was raised.
