At some point you have to let others learn the system in my opinion.
The teams needs to clean house at QB. I don't hate Rex but it's time to move on completely
Absolutely. The team needs reason to have hope, both from the perspective of players inside the locker room and from the fan perspective.

With Rex at QB there is just no hope to compete for a Super Bowl. The longer you keep him, the greater risk you run of having productive players want to leave the Redskins and the greater risk you run of having your team be a complete afterthought for prospective free agents.

When quality free agents hit the market, they pick their team as much as the team picks them. Good free agent players have options, and if you go into next year with Rex you give them no reason to choose the Redskins.

I think my bigger concern, and I alluded to this a few weeks ago, is that Rex is a "known commodity" for the Shanahans and as such he's an easy crutch to go to. I think whoever their QB is whether it's Flynn or Hoyer or RG3 or Tannehill, whoever it is, they have to-as they say-"ride or die" with him. It's the only way they can truly take that next step

the players backed rex if i remember correctly.... dont think anyone wanted to "leave" because of him....

but smoot yes i understand wat ur saying, but who? crompton? ... thats the only other guy with knowledge right now..... cuz i wont even say the other guys name... so whats wong with having rex one of 3 qbs, but not as a starter?

From that perspective I can see how they would view him as a crutch, given his familiarity with the offense, etc. But in terms of trying to keep their own jobs, keeping Rex as the starter would represent the biggest possible risk for the Shanahans.

Last year they kept Rex after giving him a three-game audition in their system. Everyone, including Dan Snyder, was at least somewhat willing to give them and Rex a chance to show that he could improve in their system.

But now after this past season where Rex showed he turns the ball over just as much in this system as any other, keeping him around would mean he HAS to make the leap, or if I'm Snyder the Shanahans would be history. I mean given the knowledge we have today, how can you take the position that Rex is likely to perform well this coming season? Keeping him would be riskier to their jobs than trading up and selecting a rookie.

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I'll say this: trading a bunch of picks to draft a 22 year old quarterback isn't mortgaging the future. It's betting the future on a single entity.

Trading a ton of picks for a guy like 26 year old Jay Cutler or 31 year old Carson Palmer is mortgaging the future. But if you are going to develop the asset yourself, its not the same thing as trying to trade a ton of draft value for a "finished product" who is already making a ton of money.

It's scenarios like the second that fans who don't get it dream up. It's that kind of "we need to get a quarterback" discussion that makes actually tries to separate having a quarterback from winning games. Trading a bunch of picks for a higher pick is just what you do if you don't like your positioning in a draft.

I'm sure it's happened at some point, but I can't remember a recent case where the QB position got wiped entirely by an existing coaching staff.

I'm not against the idea, I am just thinking that it doesn't ever happen.

I can't think of any staff completely cleaning house at the QB position either.
And the way this staff placed the emphasis on knowing the scheme I can't see it happening.
If I were a betting man I think at least 1 if not both of the Rex/Beck will be back.
Hopefully they won't be taking snaps past week 8 at the latest.

I doubt if one of them will be back next season. If the Redskins draft a QB early in the first round of April's NFL draft, then they will have 4 QBs on the active roster at the start of the season. People tend to forget that Jonathan Crompton was signed to the active roster after the season was over. Along with the highly drafted QB, Grossman will be there as well. Grossman and Beck are both around the same age, so why would they keep two journeyman quarterbacks, and one of them proved to be ineffective last season? The fact that the coaching staff preferred Grossman over Beck during the last half of the season doesn't bode well for Beck coming back next season.

Crompton, who was on the practice squad all last year, could very well be the number III quarterback on the depth chart heading into the next season.

No it doesn't. Because generally the head coach and it offensive coordinator would have been fired by now for making as many mistakes with the offense and at the quarterback position as the shanahans have.

Mcnabb - bust
Grossman - bust
Beck - bust
Not having a single young developmentatal qb on the roster in two full seasons - unforgivable.

I know what your saying but I'm more afraid whoever we bring in would pick up Grossmans bad habit just watching him. I too am ready to cut bait with Grossman and Beck and quite possibly Crompton.

Bring in Flynn from FA, get a great QB in the draft, and either bring in a late round draft pick at QB also or get a UDFA and let them all battle it out.

Beck is awful and gives us no chance to win. But he's a good guy and at least understands the system enough to hang around and help out until the end of the preseason

I agree about Rex as a starter. Those days are over.

But I actually think he's one of the better backups in the league. As bad as we thought Rex was, a couple weeks of Beck changed that. The difference between the two was obvious. If Rex was the Bears backup they probably make the playoffs and Angelo keeps his job.

I have no problem bringing back Rex as a backup behind a clear #1 QB. If Rex is the starter... :Flush:

Even worse I kinda got the feeling Beck would be released and Grossman would be staying because he knows the system. Both are FA's so it will be interesting to see if either leave or get picked up by another team as a back up. That might decide who stays and who doesn't.

I'd prefer the house cleaning idea and both be let go.

:frusty:I understand the love for RGIII, but I think we all have to understand something, no way does MS go into next season with just RGIII or Crompton and RGIII. I don't think any of us would want that either. So "IF" Grossman and Beck are both gone which I think most of us would want.... then some other "VET" will have to be brought in, preferably one that will not cost us draft picks or trading of players. Atleast for me.

So figure on a FA QB possibly being brought in, and a Drafted QB being brought in. Maybe I'm just using too much common sense.

I think Rex would be a great backup. You hope your backup can come in and win you a few games. At the same time, you hope your backup doesn't have to come in the game much at all, except in clean up time when you've already won the game. So, I'd be OK with Rex staying as a backup.
