You're right, but Kaepernick's close enough and young enough to get paid like a franchiser. Like I said before, he was overpaid, but at the same time, he had all the leverage and SF couldn't really take the chance on letting him walk.
That's the way business is done now with QB's. Sometimes you have to overpay. |
That's the way business is done now with QB's. Sometimes you have to overpay.
with tv deals and the enormous pay day you get for making the playoffs, advancing in the playoffs, making the superbowl, and winning the superbowl (how big of a payday you get goes up depending on how far you go...) overpaying here and there is easily made up for if you wind up being right. for example - we overpaid to acquire griffin, and we're going to overpay to keep him. If we wind up with multiple NFC championship appearances and at least one SB, it's going to wind up being worth the cost. given how much money the NFL is currently making, they're gambling with free money anyways. NFL ownership practically comes with a license to print money these days. the only real cost is the salary cap consequences... |

The article itself was pretty basic off-season fodder BUT I thought the following quote from Gruden was interesting:
"He [Griffin] doesn't like negative publicity," Gruden said. "He wants everything to be right. He wants everybody to love Robert and that's not always going to be the case at the quarterback position."
I have never bought into the "RGIII is a diva" concept - just too much evidence that he is a hard worker and is very well liked/respected by his teammates. However, I do think the guy wants to be liked. Not in a "look at me" or "me first" way, but in a "Let's all be pals" kind of way. Unfortunately, being an NFL QB is similar to supervising others - you can't always be their buddy. I can also see how this would clash with a head coach like Shanahan who really didn't appear to give a flying f*** if anyone liked him as long as they respected him. |

A good manager knows not to try to treat all people in the same manner. Fairly yes but not not in the same manner. People have different personalities, they value different things, they respond best to different approaches, and some need more attention than others. Shanahan must have forgotten that. If Shanahan was going to maintain a good relationship with any player, his relationship with RGIII should have been the one he valued most. |

As much as Romo can go to hell, he is better than Stafford.

Stafford throws for a ton more yardage, Romo is more accurate. I guess I just see two very capable qb's that always choke in big spots.

A lot of these guys might not be true "franchise" guys just yet in the mold of Brady, Brees, Manning, etc. (and at one time all these guys had question marks too), but in this day and age you have to pay them and place your bet that they turn into one in the very near future.

Not that anyone is going to give a shit, or say anything besides,"great, now we have to find a new scapegoat to blame for when we lose games" but Reed Doughty has moved on from the Redskins. I'll be rooting for him to continue his career elsewhere, I've always thought of him as a solid backup and even though I never wanted him to be a full time starter, I do think he's one of the genuine good guys in a game that tends to undervalue those types of players. I wish him nothing but the best in whatever his future endeavors might be. Wouldn't have minded him coming back in a backup role, but it appears we've moved on too. Oh well, best of luck to him anyways. |

Again....i realize that he played great that game. BUT if I told you Reed was going to be the best player on the field that day would you have bet more or less that we were going to win? I think that with any team in any sport your stars have to shine to win. If your role players/backups play above their heads that is a bonus. Usually it is not a recipe for success however. No offense to Willis Reed or Timmy Smith. |

Willis Reed??? He was no backup. He was an injured starter who willed the Knicks to a championship way back when... Anyway, that's how I remember it. |

Anyway, that's how I remember it.
Yeah i know. They were both more like one hit wonders. Probably bad examples but who remembers role players stepping up? Nobody. Because when role players step up and carry the team it means the stars have sub-par games. Which brings me back to my original post about how since Reed was our best player that day we lost. 😎 |

Edit: i know he was good, but that one game 7 is who he is today for better or for worse.
If you lived in NY during those years, you absolutely knew that Willis Reed was the heart of that team, short but blocky, strong as an ox, an amazing player. Off the top of my head, the Knicks had gotten DeBuschere from the Pistons, drafted Bill Bradley out of Princeton, Walt Frazier the Saluki from Southern Illinois at guard with Dick Barnett at the other guard. And a wild Afro haired forward all corners and elbows rode the bench learning the game: Phil Jackson. Stream of consciousness off the top of my head, and I wasn't even a Knicks fan. I guarantee there are millions of Knicks fans who know this story chapter and verse. Willis Reed was the leader if that team. Period. Anyway, who cares about all that among the Redskins faithful? |
Re: Paintrain's all encompassing 'discuss all things offseason' thread (Version 2.0)
It seems like taking the fact that Reed performed so well and using it to as reason for the loss is missing the point. We lost that game for a variety of reasons that have been hashed and rehashed quite a bit.
It seems to me that the point was that Reed was the type of player you want, and honestly the type of player you need. A backup that's reliable and dependable, a guy that has the ability to show up and perform big when he's called upon (like in the playoffs.) |

Disrespectfully disagree. :D Having 2 pools and 16 cabanas at an NFL stadium is just too awesome. Now if only it was at FedEx Field instead of the darn EverBank Field, you can bet your a** I do my best to make the trip up there to see a Skins game sometime soon(the money, of course, wouldn't be a problem at all. LOL). One thing that is BS is having NFL Redzone showing on the screens in the endzones. This is Jaguars football; don't show other teams scores' during the game! What's that going to do to the home fans? Guy #1: "Yeah, I'm here at EverBank Field watching my favorite team play, but it's so crappy, I think I'll watch NFL Redzone so I can see someone besides our opponet score. Hey, dude, check it out; there's actually a team that's putting up points!" Guy#2: "Yeah, and here we are with a score of a million to zero. That's depressing, bro, let's go home." Guy#1. "We suck. Jaguars suck." See what I'm saying? |
