Re: Let's talk good beer
big daddy, how do you live the good life with 3 kids? i got 1 and i cant even get away to driving range for an hour.
dang, looks like RAR is doing some good work out there. noticed stone is finally bringing out their "enjoy by" but it is until 10.31.15. its not at DTC yet but they have it listed as coming soon. I was expecting an "enjoy by 11.24.15". has this 10.31 been out but just not in Mo Co? i like DTC but hate Mo Co distribution. where the fuck is the bells? where the hell is 51 rye?
That was essentially my first solo weekend in months. After being married for 10 years and having 3 kids, my wife and I realized that we need to take time for ourselves and each other when it allows. Get so wrapped up in family and kids that you lose touch. It was set up far in advance to avoid any issues. The rest of the time, I'm working 2 web/mobile developer jobs while doing development side work for another person. rar is awesome. it'll be nice to see how they grow. I have a 4 pack of chopdank waiting for me to have. I actually got a bottle of enjoy by 10/31 on my brewery trip, gonna crack it open this weekend. I've seen it at the various places in Frederick. That and Thunderstruck IPA. Bells is readily available up this way as well. At least it was. I haven't looked for it in a bit. I could use a 4 pack of Two Hearted Tallboys. Monument City doesn't distribute very far... I feel like Jai Alai can be found in VA when it's distributed. Not sure how far of a reach Brown Distributing has...Founders is in DC for sure. My buddy has a train friend that goes to Schneider's of Capitol Hill and they have Founders there. He's got a breakfast stout waiting for me.
I'm gonna tell u what gets me pissed is at whole foods in Connecticut I'm looking at all the great beers I can't can't get in va. I reach for Cambridge brewing company bombers...bottling date is from May. Are u fucking serious? Whole foods gonna peddle beers bottle in May while charging me an arm and leg? So disappointing...clown shoes brewery same deal...really wanted to try
Yeah, I learned this the hard way...not checking bottles for sell by or bottling dates. Had to pour out a bomber of something because the hops had gone bad and it tasted like piss. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I didnt even know stone did any enjoy by 9.24.15. didnt see in MoCo.
Where did you find the 2 bolded above? ive seen it show up on untappd lately but havent seen either personally.
I got both in VA. Founders is available in DC also. Cigar city is only VA and its been almost a year since they sent anything up this way. It was a surprise to see it at the store. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
dang it, I was in VA yesterday and didnt see any Cigar City.
I havent seen founders breakfast stout in DC. i see some of their other selections but not the breakfast stout. ill keep looking. bells - odd its readily avail in Fred and Howard and baltimore etc but not Mo Co. |

Its a seasonal and just started hitting the shelves this month. Cigar city is a little harder to find. Like I said it had been a year since I've seen it. I got mine at Total Wine |

Using the beer finder on Bell's site, it's not available anywhere in MoCo (I put in zip codes in Gaithersburg and Germantown and they point at stores in NoVA). Most likely has to do with who's distributing it in MD and them not dealing with MoCo's Liquor Board. You'll have to trek up to my neck of the woods to get it. I know a 4 pack of Two Hearted ran like 8 or 9 bucks. There are some very good liquor stores up this way. DTC has them beat because of draft and growler fills, but selection is very good. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Hey is there a comprehensive website for seeing what beers are available in your area? we should make a f8cking app for this (chico copywrited)
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
BD - thanks for the look up. ive decided i am making a stand against this unchecked aggression. On my lunch break i am driving down to the Whole Foods on P street. i buying a shit ton of beer i cant find in Mo Co.
chico - untappd has a look for option. but i like your idea. BD does some type of web development, maybe he knows somebody that write code? alpine hopslam ale - anyone seen it yet? supposedly out and about in md. just have to find it. got burnt. sitting on some beer i just dont like. burley oak secret sauce (berlin, md) cost 21.99 a sixer and i pulled the trigger and its ..... weak and not good. like a watered down dipa. i know i dont like pumpkin beers but every year i try and i kick my self in the ass for it. this year i bought a 4 pack of pumpking for 17.99, hate it. anyone want $40 bucks of crappy beer? i cant bring my self to waste it. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
LOL! OTM, you posted this link back in January: SeekABrew US Distribution Map
Might not be an app, but it'll work. Good luck on your lunchtime journey. Haven't seen Alpine Hopslam but if I do, I'll let you know. |

Re: Let's talk good beer
^ Definitely bookmarking that distribution map... wish I could find Cigar City more often in my area. Whenever I'm in Tampa I always drink my fill of Jai Alai.

Re: Let's talk good beer
lunch trip to DC was kinda crazy. i was rushing so i just put "whole foods P st wash dc" in my apple map app and it put a pin on P street and N Capitol. after driving through traffic and lane closures on Georgia Ave i get to some little mom n pop corner grocery store. wtf.
i then google for the actual addy for whole foods, drive the 10m mins across DC, find it. the selection was a lot smaller than i expected. they had good stuff but id rather just drive to magruders or rodmans in DC for bigger selection. but i got me some breakfast stout. really excited. never had it. i looked last year and just couldnt find it. they only had 3 4packs on the shelf so i bought them all. i feel like an ahole clearing the shelf before a friday night but i get 1 to drink this weekend, 1 to save for thanksgiving and 1 to give to someone. the office did call after an hour or so with a passive aggressive "just checking" call. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
OTM - Awesome that you got the breakfast stout. Those fools should have beaten you to the punch.
Had my bomber of Enjoy by 10/31/15. Tropical notes are nice. Hoppy for sure. Contemplating another beer, but I'm pretty sure my palate is shot. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Just found a new beer store near me...another enjoy by bomber and some cigar city jai aila 6 pack. Don't think I've had it.
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
Breakfast stout is just sooo good
|
Re: Let's talk good beer
Jai aili...has a lot of upfront bite, first impression. Heavy body, doesn't drink light. Def good, has a little of that syrupy finish, like Sierra has...not my favorite but very solid.
Berkshire lost sailor, just a delightful iPa...brought back some ommegang rare vos and hop house for a bon fire tomorrow night.
Also had to pick up the stone's bomber enjoy by. Always a dank ass treat
Yes it is!Just got back and tried it and all I can say is Thank You.Brought a case of that and the BBC Steel Rail Pale Ale back from Mass the Mrs and I enjoyed some while cooking a couple of steaks on the grill after watching the Maryland Penn State game ,a very good afternoon!!! |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Idk if anyone else has tried this but I had the Oyster Stout from Flying Dog at the tailgate yesterday and I didn't enjoy it at all. Tasted like chocolate coffee beer. Other than that the rest of the Flying Dog variety pack was great though.

Re: Let's talk good beer
Went to Asheville, NC for a wedding this weekend. On Friday we stopped in Harrisonburg, VA for some eats and grabbed a Pale Fire double IPA. I have to admit up until that point I have been less than impressed with VAs craft brews but that was a solid IPA. When we got to Asheville went straight for Greenman Brewing my wife had the IPA and I had the ESB (not a beer we get a lot of in Maryland and I love them) both really good. Had a Catawba Brown Bear Ale that was alright but not hoppy enough for me. Next we went to Wicked Weed tried a few of their IPAs the best we had was their Freak of Nature that my wife tried. The next day off to Hi-Wire that also was a really solid IPA. Unfortunately the wedding got in our way of more brewery touring.

Been wanting to go to Asheville. How was it? Must be a ton of good beer there huh? |
Re: Let's talk good beer
i liked the breakfast stout, def one of the better stouts/porters i have had but i found the flavor profile to be really mellow. which is good. i liked it, i thought i was going to love it.
i did love kentucky bourbon barrel stout "alltech". |

If anyone is ever in Santa Cruz California you have to go here n try the smoked porter. Probably the best beer i have ever had. |

A ton. Pisgah Brewing Pisgah brewery was probably my favorite. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Yeah to piggyback on what Chico said there are over 60+ breweries in the area and several transplant breweries such as Sierra Nevada, Oskar Blues and soon New Belgium. The people are fun, music is great and just as good as the beer imo.

Yeah their oyster stout is just ok. My favorite oyster stout of all time was by 21st Amendment called Marooned on Hog Island. So much tasty brine in that. But it was a one time thing. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Celebration ale is hitting shelves soon, it's a great time of the year for beer

Anyone hit up Lagunitas Born Yesterday?

I was looking for it but sadly I don't think that it is wide distribution. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I was mistaken. Looks like its hitting the shelves today and tomorrow. Bottled on 10/26. I know for sure K-1 in Arlington has it.

Re: Let's talk good beer
Two IPA's I've been loving lately and left me wondering how I didn't discover them sooner... Westbrook & Ballast Point Sculpin.
|

Literally brewed on Monday, hit shelves starting Tuesday. One of the big MD Distributors had pictures on Instagram of them delivering it on Tuesday. From the guys I know who've had it, say it's on point. My buddy dropped off his son for my wife to watch this morning because they were in a bind, so he left me 2 of those and a Boulevard/Cigar City Collaboration No. 5 – Tropical Pale Ale. Will be enjoying those tonight. Lagunitas is updating their born yesterday beer finder quite frequently: https://lagunitas.com/borning
Two IPA's I've been loving lately and left me wondering how I didn't discover them sooner... Even did grapefruit and habanero versions as well. I haven't had Westbrook's IPA but their Gose is nice and tart. I have another friend who's daughter goes to school in SC. I'll have to have him bring me some, since they only distribute in SC, NC, GA, AL, and NY. |

Ballast Point is dank as hell. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
DTC on friday is tapping a keg of Maine's another one and will be pouring glasses only of firestones helldorado.
i looked up helldorado and it is am american barleywine at 13.2% abv. sucks bc that sounds like something id love to slowly sip in front of my tv vs having to drink on my way home from work. just read, $7 for a 4 oz pour .... the prices are getting ridiculous. at some point we have to push back. im still pissed i spent $23 some odd bucks for a sixer of secret sauce which ended up being a watered down dipa. life is so tough. |

Re: Let's talk good beer
I havent been to a craft beer store since last week but i noticed on untappd every single person i know on there, all 4 people, checked in a "born yesterday" the past 48 hours or so.
so safe to assume when i swing by DTC tonight they will have it? -------- yes, DTC has it on tap .. along w stone enjoy by, sierra nevadas nothern hemis wet hop, laguinitas doppel sticky, alltech bourbon stout (i highly recommend), 21st amend toaster pastry looks interesting too .... geezus krist ... i need like 4 more growlers. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
My buddy said Toaster Pastry was good. I may have to grab a can.
Nothing new from me. Just enjoying my Born Yesterdays, and will have a ChopDank and a few chocolate stouts this weekend. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Growler of great divide fresh hop pale ale. This stuff is always bomb ass sh8t
Picked up a couple double d ipa from old dominion just to try. Hey I can't resist double d's |
Re: Let's talk good beer
Grabbed a few stouts for International Stout Day on Thursday. 4 Hands Chocolate Milk Stout is quite tasty. Also got a 4 pack of OB Ten Fidy, which is in another world man. So thick pouring yet a luscious mouth feel.
Went to White Oak Tavern in Ellicott City on Friday night. Not quite 40 taps, had some cool stuff, some boring stuff, some weird stuff. Interesting thing was all drafts were the same price, they just changed the pour size. Some were 16, some were 12, 10, 8, etc. Weirdest was an imperial marzen they decided to put on nitro. Marzens are supposed to be light and drinkable. This was thick and had a strange after taste. Felt like you could cut it in chunks. The head stayed throughout the beer. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
I had a good beer weekend.
growler of clown shoes galatica - always good. port city's monumental ipa - as my easy drinker beer. really need to get some 51 rye, at 6% its a tasty beer with a manageable abv for sundays. kinda hurting today. rar grapefruit nectar - really grapefruity. pretty good. not sure i could drink more than a few at a time. 21st amend ipa - super super fresh, had to buy it. founders breakfast stout - love having a stash of this in the basement and remembering i have a stash of this in the basement. maines MO - real fresh, real citrusy clean. not my fav Maine selection, but its hard to pass up on a bottle of anything from them bc you only see a bottle or 2 every other month. i need to get some GD farmhouse ale or a saison or something lighter. |
Re: Let's talk good beer
maine lunch should be on MD shelves today.
-------- no lunch so far. guy at fenwick sd he has been waiting 2 weeks and was told it would arrive yesterday but didnt. he did get "tiny something beautiful" w dobs of 10-31-15. this is one my new fav beers. easy drinking pale ale. rodmans in DC right across the MD line from bethesda - full selection from founders, deschutes, bells, avery ... i love being on the DC line bc you can just hop over and get a whole new selection |
