Re: 2013 Free Agents
I'd guess it was more of a scheme fit than anything in KC. Winston is a legit RT.
|
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Winston would have been great last year. This year, only if he makes sense. He is 29 and will be 30 in November. I know OLinemen generally hold up better into their 30's and EW would be a huge upgrade. Given our cap issues and his age, I am betting we spend our money on someone a year or two younger or grab someone in the draft.
If we can get him for a reasonable 3 year contract - great. I just don't see it happening. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Well my point is, why would they pay Albert 10 million to play right tackle, when they could just let Winston play if he was so good. I never saw him play, but seems to me he may not be that good. Although, Andy Ried likes big fat maulers on his offensive line. I would rather the Redskins spend money on Chris Clemons, and one of the good corners out there and draft a right tackle at 51.
There is your answer right there. Winston excels in the ZBS when it comes to run blocking. I was about to say that Andy Reid is against the ZBS, but that is factually incorrect. Andy Reid is against running the ball. Btw, am I the only one who believes that Andy Reid is going to go down with the sinking ship because his best player is a RB. Charles better love screen passes, because he wont rush that much this year unless Reid learned that having a running game is actually a good thing. And its difficult to have a good running game when the guy calling the plays judges success not on wins and losses, but whether his QB passes it 50 times a game. |

I don't think you very funny, mister. Can't hurt right? Besides, he saw the tweet when we were on the 10th hole and said you'd have to wait because he was having too much fun. Sorry…. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Skinzman, you say Charles is their best player. Are you forgetting about Bowe and Alex Smith? Smith is probably the most underrated QB in the history of the game. The Chiefs definitely upped the 49ers on that trade.

Ummmmm NO, everything about that statement is false. And Jamaal Charles is the Chiefs best player. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
J. Charles will do fine in Andy's system. He is not a pounder who gets the majority of his yards between the tackles. He is more of a breakaway threat and Reid's system will let him operate in space more. I think - if he remains healthy - Charles is in for a big year next season.

No I dont consider Alex Smith to be better than Charles. Bowe you may have a case for, but Alex Smith? Alex Smith is also not the most underrated QB in history. He was a number 1 overall who has been outplayed his entire career by other QB's drafted that same year. How is that underrated? He is a game manager that has yet to show that he can put a team on his shoulders other than a rare game or two.
J. Charles will do fine in Andy's system. Charles better hope Reid developed an understanding of the run game after being fired by Philly, or Charles better love getting his production on screen passes. |

Dallas. Only teams so far according to PFT to talk to Winston are Houston (makes sense) and Philly. Last year Miami called. Dallas may call. We Better call (again) |

We Better call (again)
Winston doesn't make sense for us for a couple of reasons: 1) primarily salary, we are not in a position to pay top 5 money to a RT right now. 2) although Polumbus was less than stellar, we succeeded in having a successful attack to all parts of the field. 3) at 30, while not old, he isn't "young" either, and this draft will have RT's to develop. 4) speaking of developing, we have brought in several OL, and MS is big on OL stability. Bringing in a high to overpaid star power player, regardless of his ability, doesn't add to the cohesive group mentality MS creates 5) personally, the whole we gotta get player x, is the leftover mentality from the bad days. If we bring him in at a reasonable deal, great, but that won't happen, because he isn't looking for a reasonable deal. He wants the dollars. No fault on him, just saying that we don't do business that way anymore. |

Agreed. I expect J.Charles to have a career year catching the ball as he becomes KC's version of Brian Westbrook. |

Think about that one for a second. Winston, ranked 3rd and is a fit with this offense. 3) True 4) I wouldn't say we have stability at RT, at all. You're about 4/5ths correct. MS is not happy with the RT position. This is known throughout other insiders. 5) True, but every once in a while you come across a player that fits almost too pefectly or makes too much sense. Let me kind of flip this question on you. Would you want to draft a guy you have no idea how he'd hold up in the pros, or would you go with the guy who is known by the coaches (Kyle Shanahan) and is known to fit an immediate need and you know what he's going to do against other pros? Its not like we're asking a lineman from another scheme which none of our coaches have no experience with (example Ghosder Cherilus) to come here and ''see what happens''. Eric Winston supposedly dominated Von Miller last year, and I don't need to get into how great a player Von is. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
I get that Winston is one of the Best, AH was one of the best, many others were one of the best, but RT is not worth putting a big chunk of cap space towards. My point with Polumbus is not that he should be the guy, but that even a moderately priced FA/rookie combination should do wonders, and it's not worth breaking the bank for a top 5 RT.
With that said, if we cut Hall, and save his money could we have a shot at NA to replace Hall. This is a case where you could cut Hall, save his money and with a viable contract pay less money for a better CB, assuming we use him more to his talents. |

Re: 2013 Free Agents
Reading that Eric Winston can be signed as early as this evening, because he was cut.
What are people's opinion on him? -He's obviously a fit for the scheme and can play at a high level, but does he still have the desire? -I believe he's 30 now, so that comes into play too. -What are the teams feelings on Tom straight outta Compton and Polumbus? Polumbus was descent in run support, but god awful in pass-pro, is that something that can be improved upon this offseason, or is he just too slow? Personally I think I would steer clear, and just draft another T in the mid rounds to push the current RTs. |

To me, it depends on the cuts that can be made without hurting the team. Sure we can cut DHall and have the space to sign him, but does that leave us enough to get the draft class signed as well as other depth. If we have to cut to deep to make it happen, then dont pursue him. As for Compton and Polumbus. We have to move on from Polumbus. He is bad in pass protection, and that forces RG3 to take off running (both if his injuries happened on a scramble). Polumbus will never be good at pass protection. He is very tall, and unfortunately plays very tall. DE's can almost at will get underneath his pads and push him back. That forces him to plant hard and brace for those hits, which makes the speed rush effective. Unless Kyle plans on helping him out (which I doubt) then we need a better pass blocking RT. Can Compton fit that bill? I have heard good things about him, but would still like another legitimate RT to push him for the job. |

I don't know where you get value starter from? He's going to get top 5 RT money. That's not value as I see it. That being said, I would love to find a way to still get him in a Skins uniform. He was interviewed on Sirius XM NFL Radio this morning and made it sound like money will still be a big factor but looking at a team that can contend will be important too. Climb on the RGIII express Mr. Winston. Don't forget to tweet to him about joining the skins!! |

Re: 2013 Free Agents
To me, the #1 personnel concern for this team and franchise is to acquire people who can contribute to protecting RGIII. We need to fix the secondary and I think we will, but RGIII is at the core of our hopes for a championship team.
With that in mind, I think the Skins are probably looking hard at Winston as well as Sebastian Vollmer and perhaps other FA's at RT. I believe that the Skins would be willing to pay a lot for a quality starter at RT regardless of their cap situation. Somebody on the current roster who they'd prefer to keep would have to go instead. KC was a bad experience for Winston but I see no reason why he couldn't fit in well here. I know this much: A lot of Redskins fans, including myself, are going to breathe easier once we get a legitimate RT to help protect RGIII. |

Ahh, I agree there. Question is, we have done no restructuring, which makes me nervous, how are we going to afford signing him? We don't even know if we have made a call to him. |

Makes more sense than Winston, at least $$ wise. I think that's likely going to be our approach to free agency overall, the 2nd tier value types. |
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Didn't Pashos turn us down, or we turned him down about 2 years ago?
|
Re: 2013 Free Agents
Pashos makes no sense to sign now. He will be out the entire season due to a recent surgery (about a week ago) that takes 9-10 months to heal.

He just had foot surgery and will be out 9-10 months. That would be a useless signing for 2013. |

If Gamble is healthy and will take a cheap one year deal I would sign him and have him compete. Might be a good stop gap till we can get past this salary cap penalty and lack of first round picks.
