Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Cousins was fine, he missed a few throws, but was also under more pressure last night than he has been all season besides against maybe the Jets when Trent Williams was out.
What I really don't get is why the offense isn't opened up a bit more. It seemed like we had the most success against Dallas when Kirk was finally allowed to start flinging it around some towards the end. Where was THAT the rest of the game? Why after 2 turnovers inside Dallas territory were we not going for the jugular? |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
It's funny how Kirk haters go missing when he plays well and they win. Then decide to eat him apart as soon as they lose like he is the only guy on the field. He did not "play well." He avoided turnovers, that's about it. To me, that's kind of the base line. His yd/attempt was ~5.3 - that is abysmal under any circumstances. (Matt Schaub's against Miami was 6.7, Blaine Gabbert's against Chicago was 6.1, Hasselback was 6.5, Hoyer was 6.8; At the other end of the spectrum Wilson was 10.7 and Tyrod Taylor was 10.1.) You can say many true things about KC's performance - some good true things, some not so good true things, and some flat out bad true things. Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Kirk got a bit better as the game went on, but the biggest thing I was disappointed in was his failure to recognize some of Dallas's obvious defense tendencies. When we ran on 2nd and 1 and 3rd and 1 back to back, as soon as Dallas brought 68560 guys up to the line, at least change it to an outside run or a slant or something. Even if you throw out a fake audible just to see if some of the extra guys will back off.
Yeah, that 3rd and 1 was a terrible waste. Gruden/Mcvay should have called something different, and like you said, KC should definitely have audibled or taken a timeout. either way you don't run that play when the D is stacked up like that. |
One thing is important to know about kirk, he's pretty damn clutch in the 2 min offense.
KC never made them pay for the pressure. Simple as that.
Back to full-on "KC is who he is and who has always been." Good enough to hang around the league for many years. I think a run game, better oline play, and a weapon or two more just might call for a re-check on that ceiling. Edit : check out drew brees numbers after 30 games. Pretty amazing what happened to that guy after he got some help. Brees had less td's. More int's. Less yards. Whether or not cousins ever becomes brees is not the point. It is that 30 games is not enough to call it as you think you see it. There is plenty of ceiling left for Kirk. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I think Cousins will be back at least for 2016 because honestly what else better do you expect to get in this offseason? We could always end up drafting a QB for the future, but I wouldn't be comfortable with a rookie starting on a .500ish team right out of the gate.
Unless there are some veteran QB's hitting the open market that aren't going to be demanding crazy contracts, what else do people expect to get this offseason? I am not even saying Kirk is the QB of the future/franchise etc etc....just that he is likely the best option for 2016. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
This sums up my feelings on Cousins pretty much exactly:
I can’t say that Kirk Cousins was bad last night; I also can’t say he was good. He had a couple nice throws; the touchdown to Jackson, a pass over the middle on third down to Garcon (a bit behind, but he stood in the pocket well). The one thing I think we’ve learned with Cousins is that he’s like a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL: dependent on those around him. That means some games he’ll look solid and other games he leaves you wanting, and needing, more. He’s not going to get hot over the next four games and lead a division title run just with his arm. I think the Redskins know this -- and I think Cousins knows this as well. Cousins remains the best option right now for Washington at quarterback; no NFL person would tell you otherwise. His strength has been his efficiency, but to win consistently that way you need more from other parts, notably the run game. I do like that he led scoring drives at the end of the half and the game.
Predictability, run blocking stymie Washington Redskins' attack - Washington Redskins Blog- ESPN |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
That assessment is pretty spot on. Over the course of an entire season I am willing to be Cousins will always grade out about middle of the pack. There will be a handful of games where he shows a little bit more to where people will think he is becoming something else, but then he will go and have average performances, and I am not talking bad games, more like games like last night where he wasn't what anyone would call "bad" but there were openings and opportunities for him to be really good but in the end he ended up looking okay.
With that said it is still an entirely different question than "Can we win with Cousins" because I would say Cousins has shown enough that if we build a contender around him we can. People forget that Colin Kaepernick took a team to the Superbowl, Trent Dilfer, Rex Grossman, etc etc etc......what did all three of those teams have in common? Stout defenses. They were DEFENSE first. Well hey, what is Scot Mcloughan known for? How does he build his teams? What is his DNA? There ya go. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I think Cousins is much better running the hurry up. Teams are less likely to have time to call blitzes on him. And he doesn't seem to overthink things.
I wish Gruden would put him in the situation more often. |

If this is how you truly feel. Then, just leave it to that. Obviously Kirk is a guy who will need guys around him to be successful, and that's a no brainer, because there is only about 4 QB's in the NFL right now that can single handily carry a team on his shoulders. That being said.... Kirk is being asked to do JUST THAT. Which should be the main concern going forward. It is critical to get the execution of the run game polished. |

He obviously runs it well. Last night would have been the perfect time to go hurry up as a change up and to press the tempo. These are things that we see yet Gruden who's getting 5million a year doesn't??? |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
You can't just over use the hurry up though because then you run the risk of doing what the Eagles did a bunch and your drives end so quick that the defense is on the field way too long and tires out.
The hurry up offense works great if you are getting 1st downs, but if fail to do that you've just required your defense to get back out there with little rest. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I must not know anything about football because I actually believe Kirk is a bright spot on this team. Can somebody give me a name of a QB who could come in here with this roster and light it up..I find more fault with the play calling than with the play of Kirk..

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Joe - I have to say I give some extra weight to ur commentary bc I think ur options are spot on. I have thought ur commentary of cousins has been somewhat pre dispositioned but ur comments now that Kirk is the best option going forward for next year has minimized that. As a cousins supporter, and I don't
Speak for all of us, he has shown enough to warrant our trust for next year. Nothing more. I think he does leave bigger plays on the field. To his defense in the boys game he was few inches short on big plays that big time qbs make. He was a game manager against the boys when a 1 big play pre 5 mins would have been the tipping point. He left some plays on the field. He knows he left some plays on the field. I just really like that in all out criticism of Kirk u acknowledge he is the best qb for 2016. Ur criticism of him takes on an objective approach and glad To see that. Especially After a average game Manager type game he just had where he left yards on the field. Kudos joe |

He has always had to play catch up to get the reps, work with the 1st team, etc. He is 7-12 as a Starter i believe. Get him a good O-Line and some weapons and then judge him after another season or two. I am not a smart football guy by any means but i think 30 games is way, way, too early to say that a guy has peaked and won't get any better. For god's sake we lived and died by Jason Campbell for four seasons and people on here still were like "he needs more time, he is just starting to get into his groove, etc."" Cousins should have AT LEAST another full season as the unquestioned starter before he is judged. And that means sticking by him through good and bad. He is going to have games where he throws 4 picks. Just like he is going to have games where he throws 4 TD's. I think the good outweighs the bad with KC, and he should have as bright a future here as anyone.... |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Cousins is likely going to get 2016 to prove himself. There really isn't a better IMMEDIATE option available.
Something people have to remember is unless your QB is Brady, Manning, Brees, or Rodgers, you are largely going to be dealing with a QB who from a week to week basis can look really good, average, or mediocre. Just take a guy like Eli Manning for example, he has two rings, and has gone on stretches of games where he absolutely looks like one of the best QBs in the league, however when you look at his overall body of work there are a lot of stretches where he looks downright mediocre or at least just average. In the NFL, you either have a Top 5 QB or you most likely will be required to build a contender around a serviceable QB. That is just a fact of the NFL. There are simply not 15-20 elite caliber QB's to go around. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Kirk is way better than JC ever was
My problem with Jason Campbell was he played okay but not good enough.... we had two first round picks in 2005....both of those picks were gone by 2010 and 2011...Gibbs could have drafted Aaron Rodgers but he didn't... |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Phillip Rivers would be talked about with those guys....IF....he was on a consistently good team. Brees as I already mentioned got off to a terrible terrible start to his career. Than he got playmakers around him and boom. Eli is a great example. Give him an all worls defense a good oline a good rb and wr's he wins rings. Take it away he is an instant game manager. If not for odb making miraculous one armed catches on poorly thrown balls and Eli would not be jack. Had Russel Wilson been drafted by the Browns or Redskins he might be backing someone up rite now. Its got everything to do with situation.

If kirk plays well these next 4 games and we win the east he deserves an extension imo. He's already matching redskins qb records from the glory days. Of course griff was great for 1 yr too but kirk seems to have a better overall understanding than any of our past qbs

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
It would be deserving for some of you fans for Cousins to land somewhere else and be the pro bowl player I think he can be..I will agree the jury is still out on him so to speak but in spite of the team around him He is playing very well..If you can't see that then you either don't know jack about football or you are a closet RGIII fan ! I asked this question before ..what QB do you think would make the redskins a top notch team now..like next week?? to the folks who don't like Kirk who would you bring in for the rest of the season of you could ..BRADY? ROGERS?NEWTON?Wilson?Brees?Manning?Dalton?Palmer?Ryan?..what QB could come in here without a run game with no pass protection bad special teams and a losing culture thats going on a decade..who ?? Cousins is doing all he can do with what he has to work with! as far as the Dallas game IF Romo had not got hurt early in the year the Cowboye would have already clinched the division and most likely have at least 9 wins already..they have the 5th ranked D in the league ..its not like we got beat by a crap team .I bet you the Skins can get at least a number one pick for cousins now..dallas would love them some Cousins..so would a lot of other teams!
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
No matter what happens. Kirk deserves an extension. He'll get the franchise tag most likely. He's top half of the league in performance for his position, and there isn't another option coming out that we can consider grabbing in our draft position.
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
If the Redskins get lucky and get a few draft picks and free agents that actually make a difference and next year with Cousins we win 10 games the Cousins haters will say the reason they won was the new players they added..it will never be because of Kirks play to some. If Jay Cutler had been playing in washington all these years what do you think the fan base would say of his career?? I would not trade Cousins for Cutler.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I don't understand why people get so worked up on both sides in regards to Cousins.
Unless he truly shits the bed in the rest of the season, Cousins is likely going to get an extension. He will probably get overpaid, because all QBs get overpaid (see Ryan Tannehill). QB free agency doesn't look that great for next offseason; and Scot McCloughan already had a bad experience in Seattle when they got Matt Flynn as the top FA QB and he flopped. On the flipside, just because Cousins gets an extension it doesn't mean that the team will not get a young QB in the next year or so. I mean look at Green Bay way back, when they had Favre and drafted Rodgers. |

We're not talking about anointing Kirk as the Redskins starter for the next ten years but he is our best option for right now. And we're going to have to overpay because the specter of a huge $25MM Franchise Player tag will make it necessary. |

I said "hold colt, and get a veteran to back up KC". I meant collectively. I should have been more clear and said "another veteran" though. My bad. Anyway I think anytime you draft a player, in this case a qb as you mentioned, that is not going to play anytime soon - when you have SO MANY OTHER NEEDS- it is a reach. Also it would maybe mess with KC's head. Where as if we stand pat with Colt and another veteran, KC knows he is the man. When GB took Rodgers, Favre was obviously towards the end of his career and it was a case where a really highly touted qb was inexplicably hanging around. |

When I say serviceable I mean that it's a QB you can win with, but perhaps not a difference-maker at the position. I don't look at Cousins as a difference maker kind of QB. He is a QB that you could probably interchange out with 8-10 other QB's in the league and the team would likely have the same results based on the team around them. The Top 4-5 QB's in the league make their teams better. Brady for example makes no names into stars for the few seasons they are catching passes from him. These are the QB's you can't afford to lose. They make a good team great, a great team elite. Does that help explain it a bit better? |
