Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Conflicting reports now on if redskins are going to use tag at all:

Washington won’t decide on Kirk Cousins until after the season ends | ProFootballTalk

Albert Breer says skins don't know what they are going to do, and won't look at the situation until after the season.

LaCanfora and others still say the skins already have plans to lock up Cousins to keep him off the open market:

Redskins Won’t Let Kirk Cousins Walk After Season « CBS DC

So if Cousins gets tagged the second time, does that mean that in 2018, the starting point for his negotiations would be 24 million?

CRedskinsRule 11-28-2016 05:02 PM

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

But why tag him, if you are ok with the fact that you paid him ~20M this year, ~24M next year, how bad would he have to play not to sign him to a long term deal. Sign him to a 6 year deal, guarantee him along the lines of Andrew Luck's contract -
Per PFT Luck received $87 million in injury guarantees of which $47 million is fully guaranteed at signing.
I would say he should have even more fully guaranteed at signing. And be happy that we have a long term answer.

If you tag him in 2017, you set yourself up for a terrible negotiation in 2018. Either a 34M franchise tag, or a long term deal with 34M as a base.

He's earned the long term deal, and he'll get it.
He's earned the long term deal, and he'll get it.
Definitely and it's going to cost even more now. That 18-19/mil a year deal went to 22-24mil/yr. I fully expect that deal to start at 50mil guaranteed and be an average of 23-24mil/yr.

Ranking:

2nd in yards
5th in completion %
6th in QB rating
9th in TDs

He's going to get paid. If Flacco is making 22mil/yr, you can believe that's the starting point with it ending at Luck at 24.5mil/yr.

Flacco is a SB winning QB who doesn't have the weapons that KC does. He played a big part in some playoff games on the road. Plus the SB. Not trying to undermine what KC is doing, he's been impressive. But Flacco delivered when it mattered most. In the end maybe that's what Redskins management might be looking at. He's going to have play at this current level in the post season.

3 years of the franchise tag would average over $25M so you can bet that's what they will be looking at.

It seems to me that the most important number to Kirk's side would be the amount that is fully guaranteed. With the amount guaranteed as a negotiation item, the Skins could start low on that amount and give some on the guaranteed amount later in the negotiations in order to bring down the annual salary amount.

The number of years in the contract is also an issue. Will it be three, four, five, or even six years?

It just needs to get done. The guy has been a consummate professional -- languished beyond RGIII for years, stepped in largely when things were pretty bleak and did ok (not great) and was always great about accepting his role. He then seized the chance after beating RGIII out in training camp and has shown continued improvement since. Plays with emotion and seems well liked and respected by teammates. Good citizen in the community. it is crazy talk that we'd let the guy walk. We won't.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Yeah no way he walks. I know we're a new age as far as handing out money goes but he's the best potential free agent we've had in years so it seems laughable that he would walk. I think Kirk knows here is the best place for him as well and that will factor in. You guys wanna talk crazy scenarios? John Clayton would offer him a 4 year 96 mil deal, can you imagine Kirk getting that two years ago?

I don't know of anybody who was always behind Kirk Cousins. I think the general consensus among 'skins fans was that RGIII could've been our franchise guy had he not gotten hurt. I would bet that the majority wasn't really behind Cousins until the second half of last season, and probably not even until halfway through this season.

I think RG3 has shown that being injury prone was only one factor in why he was never going to become the franchise guy.

Oh exactly. Of course 2012 nobody cared about KC. 2013 I held out hope. I told him since 2014. I assumed he basically meant for the last couple of years. In other words there was a time when a lot of people thought we simply did not have the long term answer on our team. Even after Griff was gone.
I disagree about Griffs injury killing his career tthough. There is also that little "cannot play the position " thingy. Lol

Yes, Luck belongs there. The lack of talent and one of the weakest OL's around don't help him. Don't believe me? What were people here saying about Cousins a few years ago when our OL sucked? People wanted him gone. Newton I agree, over rated.

I am thinking their must be some sort of affiliation with Luck and the West Coast? Hmmm? Lol
I agree that Lucks team is not great. Fair enough. However i have seen him make plenty of turnovers and bad decisions that have nothing to do with protection problems. KC got the benefit of the doubt because he was on the bench. It was an experience issue. Luck has been starting since day one. The more KC played the better he got and is getting. Cannot say the same for Luck. Time will tell us more though. Maybe I underestimate him. It is also possible I cannot get past his goofball persona. [emoji1]

"Kirk Cousins of the Washington Redskins, Marcus Mariota of the Tennessee Titans and Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys are a little different. Each of these three quarterbacks are in their first or second season as a full-time starter. They make up the next wave of talented passers and will almost certainly be considered top-10 quarterbacks when the aging veterans inevitably drop off and retire."

I think this is a reasonable way for the author to rank these three QB's, whether or not I agree with him.

I personally like Shanahan's system better, where there is a emphasis on the run and the QB is under center more. I sort of feel like if you're a good running team that's like a good defense, you can take that anywhere. That's what was so good about Gibbs 1, that identity of power running.

I think KC can run both systems very well.

Re: Kirk Cousins 24/7 thread

Regardless, if the Redskins want any shot at the postseason, then the quarterback must lead them. So the burden is on Cousins, who earned the franchise tag a year ago with his play in December. Again: If you’re going to earn possibly the largest contract for a quarterback, then expectations are rightly higher. He reached that level in October and November, when he threw 17 touchdown passes to four interceptions (it was eight and zero, respectively, in November alone). It can be done. One game doesn't define a season or a future. But one month certainly helps do just that.

In December, Cousins has completed 63.8 percent of his passes with three touchdowns and three interceptions. He owns a passer rating of 85.4 and a total QBR of 68.2. Not everything is on him, but if you tout the 2015 numbers, you have to accept 2016 as well. And last year Cousins was praised for his four December games (they played Dallas in January after clinching the division): He threw 10 touchdowns and one interception with a 121.0 passer rating and total QBR of 84.2.

He’ll earn what he gets this offseason, too, whatever the amount.

Against Carolina, there were times Cousins didn’t wait long enough to see an open target -- checking down to Chris Thompson, for example, in the first quarter when a split second later Jordan Reed broke open about 10-15 yards over the middle. Too many missed chances.

Snyder will always be more about selling jerseys / making $$$ than putting a wining product on the field. If we can do both, then great, but his priority has always been making that dollar first.
