Cousins will be out here by me for his football camp on July 6,7,8,9 give or take a travel day. I would think hes got to sign before that or immediately afterward.

But JLC is wrong about the Redskins 95% of the time, so if he says 80%, that means more like 25% chance it gets done.

Carr signing would be a boost for our talks, because it puts a number that I think could be used as a very good comparable for both sides. As long as Oakland doesn't do a crazy deal, it could pave the way for a KC/Skins deal.

the tag line is:
“Don’t get bitter. Get better“
– Kirk Cousins –

If that's what he's preaching, he ought to be signing at this point. No reason to be bitter at anything anymore.

I was actually hoping the Carr deal would happen after the July deadline. Whatever money Carr will get, Cousins' agent would want more than that. I don't mind Cousins' getting paid, I just don't want us to end up like the Ravens when they gave Flacco that monster deal.

FWIW, Andrew Brandt also said this week that he believes the deal will get done.

I am just saying that if Carr reaches a deal, then both sides have a tangible and comparable contract to look at. If it is a crazy rich one, then it may push KC away from negotiating, but if it's "reasonable" for a top qb talent, then it gives the team and KC a good reference. As for the Flacco deal, I believe that we have had a few good drafts that will help keep our costs down through rookie contracts. The Ravens issue was as much that after they won the SB everyone wanted to be paid like a star.

-- that might be another reason to get the deal done this year, cuz if we were to win the SB and have to pay for KC and all our "stars", we would be in Baltimore's situation.

Good point. Oakland actually has a pretty good FO, so hopefully they won't go overboard.

The skins will have to pony more than $25m/year, that's the rumor around here. Cousins has better numbers than Carr if I'm not mistaken. This is not good.

It's all about the guaranteed money. Let's see how much of Carr's money is guaranteed. I think Carr is very much a comparable QB to Cousins.

Hopefully we can get the kid from
Wyoming if this doesn't pan out. I am not sure
Cousins is worth risking the building of the overall team if he asks for the moon. He has the crazy yardage stats, but he can't score in the red zone and throws ints at critical junctures of a game. I do want him signed, but not if we are going to have to let a ton of guys go in the near future that are balling. We can't expect to contend signing journeyman types to one year prove it deals on the cheap.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

JLC reporting that the Carr deal is said to include $75M salary over the first three years. That would be the most $$$ ever paid an NFL QB over a 3 yr. period, exceeding the $71.3M due to Andrew Luck in his contract. That is an indicator of the range we should expect for a Cousins LTD. It's crazy money, I know, but it is also the market for NFL QB's.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I think this should give the Redskins comfort in giving Cousins the money he deserves. Before this Carr deal they had to feel like they were stepping out on a bit of a limb, giving Cousins so much would have made them feel like they were above the market for him.

But this shows that the market is going to keep increasing for quality QBs, as long as there are so few quality QBs in the NFL.

If I'm the Redskins brass today I'm feeling more comfortable. Yeah Kirk will be expensive, but other QBs are going to get paid too. They're not going to find themselves at a cap disadvantage compared to other teams - other QBs are going to get theirs too.

That's a good insight on this. I was wondering if the Carr deal would help or hinder the talks with Cousins. Let's hope a deal gets done soon!
