Re: 2009 Free Agents
I tend to look at this thread more as a news wire. Just a place to dump all the news about free agents throughout the league.
But when we're talking about Redskins players, or players we are or could/should be targeting those merit their own threads. |

The possible JT move to NE would come of no surprise.
COULD JASON TAYLOR WIND UP IN NEW ENGLAND? Posted by Aaron Wilson on March 11, 2009, 4:05 p.m. After creating a void at outside linebacker when they traded Mike Vrabel to the Kansas City Chiefs, the New England Patriots are regarded as a potential destination for veteran free agent defensive end Jason Taylor, according to Mike Reiss of the Boston Globe. A six-time Pro Bowl selection who leads all current NFL players with 120 1/2 sacks, Taylor, 34, was cut earlier this month by the Washington Redskins. According to the Globe, Taylor, 34, would fit the Patriots’ need for a proven pass rusher. The point is seconded by Dave Hyde of the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Plus, as the article notes, Taylor and Tom Brady are good friends. |

Darth Hoody is going to brainwash JT into going to OTAs and he will inject him with his magic formula that makes old defensive players stay healthy and play well. |

Boy, I sure hope one of those 7 defensive lineman can play wideout. LOL. On a serious note, getting a traffic violation(s) is not a big deal, however given Burress' troubles, I wonder how will this affect him (and whether this will tick off Goodell).

I would be surprised if the iggles don't get in mix to acquire Boldin. They have I think 12 draft picks (or something crazy?) and a lot of cap space. And the need.
CARDINALS SHOPPING BOLDIN Posted by Mike Florio on March 12, 2009, 3:59 p.m. Kurt Warner might get to keep his $2 million, after all. A league source tells us that the Arizona Cardinals are shopping receiver Anquan Boldin to potential trade partners. Warner recently has suggested that he’d devote a portion of his salary to signing Boldin to a new contract. (We don’t think Warner really means it.) Boldin, a six-year veteran, is signed through 2010. He has wanted for roughly a year a significant increase from his current range of $2.5 million to $3 million. With teammate Larry Fitzgerald at $10 million per year, Boldin is believed to want at least $9 million annually. Boldin previously has requested a trade. At one point after the Super Bowl, Boldin said that he would not sign a new deal with the Cardinals, and that he wanted to be dealt to a new team. More recently, he had softened in his position, expressing a willingness to consider a new long-term contract to stay with the team. |

CHIEFS “TERMINATE” DAVID MACKLIN Posted by Mike Florio on March 18, 2009, 4:36 p.m. The new Kansas City Chiefs don’t mess around. Two players have been arrested since Scott Pioli became the G.M. And both players have been cut. Or, in the case of cornerback David Macklin, terminated. The release from the team bears the headline, “Chiefs Terminate CB David Macklin.” The two-sentence statement reads as follows: “The Kansas City Chiefs terminated the contract of CB David Macklin on Wednesday. Macklin played in four games with the Chiefs in 2008.” Macklin was busted five days ago for DUI. Earlier in the offseason, tight end Michael Merritt was arrested for possession of marijuana. He was later released. It remains to be seen whether the new-look NFLPA fights the decision to “terminate” Macklin. Under the substance abuse policy, the league has exclusive jurisdiction to discipline players for criminal charges arising from alcohol use or abuse. Thus, the union could choose to argue that the Chiefs were not permitted to take action of any kind against him. Then again, the fact that the move came in the offseason greatly reduces Macklin’s potential losses. He played in only four games last season, and likely wasn’t a lock to make the 53-man roster. |

Yes good move by KC, not that they lost much but anyway. It's a privilege to play in the NFL, act accordingly! I will look for the local newspaper/online article about the DUI on Macklin. He was pulled over in Newport News on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. (Right down the road from my home and where he grew up) at like 3:10am for excessive tinted windows on a BWM luxury car. Then of course he just happened to be legally drunk. |

I don't see the big deal here, it's David Macklin. I guarantee he wouldn't have cut Jared Allen when he got his 19 DUI's. |

No one's arguing that he wouldn't cut Allen, because he's a freakin Pro Prowler! The guy could knock a man out with a bat and he'd still be on the team. He's a great player MACKLIN ISN'T. My point is players that are bad football players like Macklin should not get DUI's, because they have a greater chance than (Allen) to get cut. Macklin shouldn't have put himself in that situation because he's almost assured to get cut. |

Id bet that Macklin was going to get cut anyway and they were just doing this to set a tone for the younger players. |

Macklin shouldn't haven been drinking and driving because he could of have ended up like Donte Stallworth...or Derek Thomas. That the worst thing that happened to him is he got cut by the Chiefs, he should consider himself blessed |

We could use Osgood on ST's but he would have the same problem here with playing time at the WR spot. Sounds like he doesn't mind throwing his coach under the bus. We already have Portis for that.

BROWNS ANNOUNCE ACQUISITION OF PATTEN
Posted by Mike Florio on March 23, 2009, 10:08 p.m. On the same day that G.M. George Kokinis indicated that the Browns would be signing receiver David Patten, the Browns did just that. The team announced the move earlier this evening. Patten returns to the Browns nine years after a one-season stint with the club, during which he started eleven games. The next year, Patten jumped to the Patriots, and participated in the team’s three Super Bowl championship seasons. Patten’s 12-year NFL career was actually preceded by a one-season stint with the Albany Firebirds of the AFL. He spent the past two seasons with the Saints, and two seasons prior to that with the Redskins. |

The Bills are met with June at the beginning of March and they're the only team I've seen a report of interest in him. The Raiders, Ravens and 49ers met with Smith and he's close to signing with SF. Cato June is washed up, but I wish we'd looked at Marvel Smith. Too late now, it appears. |
Re: 2009 Free Agents
The Browns are apparently trying to build a replica of our 2005 offense, at least in terms of players we could have acquired.
- They recently traded Kellen Winslow, who we could have drafted in 2004. - They have Braylon Edwards, who we had interest in back in 2005. - To complement Edwards, they have David Patten and Robert Royal - They will have a QB competition between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn, either one of which could have conceivably been Mark Brunell's successor if not for Campbell. I don't see this ending well. |

Re: 2009 Free Agents
PP is back with the Gregg.
Saints Add Another Safety Posted by Mike Florio on March 26, 2009, 11:56 a.m. A week or so after signing free agent Darren Sharper, the Saints are shoring up their last line of defense with another veteran safety. According to Adam Caplan of Scout.com, the Saints have agreed to terms with Pierson Prioleau. Prioleau will serve as a backup to Sharper and Roman Harper. The move reunites Prioleau with defensive coordinator Gregg Williams; they have worked together in Jacksonville, Washington, and Buffalo. In ten NFL seasons, Prioleau has played primarily as a reserve. In 2002, however, he was a 16-game starter for the Bills. And he began the 2006 season as a starting safety with the Redskins, but suffered a torn ACL on the opening kickoff of the team’s Week One game. In Jacksonville last season, Prioleau appeared in 16 games, starting once. |
