Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)

Just preordered Xbox One on Amazon. Says it will arrive December 4th. Honestly never would have guessed that it would be my first purchase of the new generation, heck I thought it would be the last one after a new PC and PS4.

It seems like it has a SSD hard drive seeing as how they say it boots up instantly and has very short load times, and though it sucks that it can't be upgraded directly 500 gb is still a good bit of size especially for a gaming machine. Also good that you can plug in an external hard drive for additional storage space.

I hate the once a day check in nanny state, but if it allows me to use game disc only to install the full game onto my hard drive then I can live with it. Actually in that case I kind of prefer it. Could care less though about Kinect.

Will likely get Dead Rising 3, NBA 2K14, Watchdogs, and Assasins Creed Black Flag. Maybe FIFA 14. Also looking forward to Halo 5 which will come out next year.

As for PS4 and a new PC. Well PS4 won't have any exclusives that appeal to me until next year with Infamous Second Son and I can't see which one will be next after that. As for a new PC, I go back and forth but I don't think any GPU I get at this time will be a significant upgrade to the new consoles. Unlike now where you can easily get a GPU that destroys PS3 and 360 for around $100 if not less. Where as if I get one now for $200 I will have one thats only marginally better then the new consoles.

I pre-ordered both consoles, still undecided as to which one I'll actually keep. I'm hoping I can maybe sell one and make some extra $$ around Christmas time.

Microsoft listens to its' customers? Well I'll be. I was kinda hoping they'd keep ignoring its' customer base so it would be a little easier to hate on them.

I dunno about listening to them... Microsoft had horribly bad press after E3, hell even before E3, if anything this is damage control. They were about to lose a significant portion of their fan base.

Next thing Microsoft needs to do is get rid of those talking heads who were like, "Well if you can't get an internet connection then you better play Xbox 360" and the idiots in the think tank that thought the original DRMs were a good idea.

I don't think MS had much of a choice. If they had stuck their guns they could have had a disaster on their hands sales wise. I give them credit for trying to push things in a different direction to start with, people just hate change and these days especially people make that known loud and clear.

This. Tells you how insulated they are to have ever thought that was going to fly. I tend to buy only new games, and couldn't conceive of life w/o broadband, but the new requirements seemed a little much to me. With this, they've secured my pre-order. Regardless of the motivations, they reversed course in order to make the right call.

The ncaa 14 demo is rock solid. They added a bunch of new controls this year, running the option is a blast and the game just has a great feel. Really looking forward to the full game now.

Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)

Built a new monster PC recently for about $1,200 ($1,400 with the monitor). GTX 770 GPU, I5-3570k, SSD for Windows. So as a result I canceled my pre-order for Xbox One. I was originally going to hold out but the main game I was getting it for, Dead Rising 3, was having huge frame rate problems this close to launch so I would rather wait and see instead of betting that everything will be fixed on day 1.
The frame-rate is also a big concern. It’s understandable that next-gen code presented this will have a variety of technical hitches and problems but nothing else we saw E3 had the same frame-rate problems Dead Rising 3 did. Dying Light, the closest comparison at the E3 in terms of on-screen activity, didn’t choke on its sheer number of zombies like Dead Rising 3 did.

While a sluggish frame-rate may be a case of optimisaing the code, Capcom Vancouver doesn’t have the same option for a quick fix when it comes to the humour and the tone of Dead Rising 3.
Also that Kinect having to be plugged in for the system to work creeped me out. I know it will likely not be a big deal but I still haven't heard a good reason why it needs to be plugged in for the system to work.

Will likely get it eventually but don't think I can justify a day 1 purchase. Ironically enough i think this video was the initial turning point that got me thinking about cancelling my preorder.

Word of advice, If you buy NCAA 2014, get it at Target. You buy it and a 12 pack of coke and get a $10 target gift card for free.

Fwiw, Dead Rising 2 had some insanely stupid bugs earlier this year on the 360. You had to limit the way in which you completed some tasks so as not to crash the game. Makes me wonder if the problem might lie more with the dev than the mfr in this case.

Agreed, and I believe eventually they can be corrected, however at this point I'm no longer willing to bet $560 that it will work correctly on day 1 especially after investing $1,200 in a new custom PC.

If anyones picking up NCAA 14 today, let me know how the gameplay is. IGN only gave it a 7.4 out of 10 so I'm a little reluctant to get it first day (plus I'm deadass broke) so I'm waiting a couple of weeks.

I've been playing it since Friday, I like it a lot. It's nothing ground breaking but it's definitely an improvement over the last 2 years. I'd give it a solid 8/10. Is it worth a day 1 buy? Eh, if you're a big fan go ahead, otherwise it's probably a better value to pick up for $40 in couple of weeks.

I love that Rockstar doesn't pump out new GTA games every year but damn, GTA IV was released in 2008. That's too damn long. I'm sure it will be well worth it though. Everything I've read about it sounds amazing.

Seriously. I've been hearing about this game for years already. GTA IV seems like a decade ago. I'm also surprised they're coming out with it now, seeing the new consoles have just been launched.

And thanks to recos on this board I played both Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3, and never thought I'd say this but I enjoyed them more than GTA IV. Hope Rockstar spends less time on the cut scenes and cinematic effects, and more time on gameplay like San Andreas.

I hope 2k picks it up, though it seems unlikely because the NCAA does not want to give any of the money they make from the game to the players. I honestly think 2k makes the best sports games and its not even close. ESPN NFL 2K5 was so much better than madden.

I agree with him, I thought NFL 2K5 was a blast and I definitely preferred it over Madden but once EA got the contract I stuck with Madden. But still though, the last NFL game 2K made was 8 years ago, it's time to get over it.

Call me lazy, I haven't looked back over the thread, but did anyone end up playing The Last of Us? Its a PS3 exclusive and it came out in June and I don't remember reading anything about it here, but people say it's a masterpiece. All I've seen is perfect scores everywhere and Game of the Year nods along with GTA V (well, people are predicting it) and Bioshock Infinite.

I really went back and forth over buying NCAA 14 or The Last of Us, I chose NCAA simply because of it's replay value and it being able to hold me over til Madden is released.

I'm trying to wait for the price drop on TLOU since it came out first.

if you want you can watch the last of us on youtube, it's almost the same as playing it, since it's more or less an interactive story on rails.

it's not bad though.

NO ONE READS MY POST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I have made NO LESS then THREE, tres, tlātë, SAN, thre references to this GAME in THIS THREAD alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.............................What was the question?

That Guy has a point. For just the story you can watch on YouTube. However the game is also a lot of fun to play. Ironically enough it does survival horror better then Resident Evil. Numerous points of the game which are pretty creepy at the very least. And the chance to choose weather or not to get through parts with stealth or fighting is reminiscent of Metal Gear Solid.

Excellent opening sequence. The only better opening I've seen is God of War 3.

If you can find it in your heart to pay full price then I beg you if for nothing more then to support these types of games in the future. However at the very least I recommend buying it at some point. Even if it's used, I think it's easily good enough to justify playing it instead of watching it on YouTube.

Personally I haven't finished it yet but it's most likely going to end up as my choice for GOTY which currently stands as Bioshock Infinite.
