I'm kind of surprised RB Mike Bell hasn't been mentioned at all.

Wasn't he a Shanahan pick? And he ran kind of well for the Saints this season... I think I'd rather him over a 30-yr old back like Tomilinson, Parker, etc. ... he'd be rather cheap and already know the system.

But again... Shanny must not have been to impressed with him Denver... haven't heard of any interest from the Skins.
He's young but hasn't done a hell of a lot. Might be worth looking though, he looked probably the best since his rookie year last year. If we don't get Parker he'd be a logical choice to consider.

Pashos's agent says no deal is in place

There were reports Saturday evening the Redskins agreed to terms with both Artis Hicks and Tony Pashos, which still could happen. But as of now, Hicks is the only new offensive lineman headed to Ashburn.

"It's not true. It's not true," Pashos's agent, Rick Smith, said before I could ask a question after contacting him on his cell phone. "He left the building. He's headed to Cleveland right now."

Okay. But is Pashos close to signing with the Redskins? "We're nowhere near close," Smith continued. "Like I said, he's headed to Cleveland."

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread

I think when you look at the Redskins off season on a whole, up to this point, there's no question in my mind that they've positioned themselves better than any team in the NFL. They've restructured their front office in a significant way, which has injected a sense of steadiness and focus into the atmosphere and, probably just as important, trimmed some much need fat from the roster. All of this before draft day, which hopefully will yield a starter or two.

In terms of the non-moves, well, it's easy to look at the coulda, shoulda, woulda's. Every team would love to have a Julius Peppers. But the truth is Peppers isn't going to turn the Chicago Bears into an instant playoff contender, and it's going to take him time to acclimate to a new system. That's true whether it's in Chicago or in D.C. Oh, and Andre Carter ain't too shabby himself. The 'Skins get to keep a steady Carter, who on paper, was just as productive as Julius Peppers last season for a third of the price. It's also worth noting that Andre Carter is only 8 months older than Peppers.

I don't think the Redskins are the team to beat, maybe not even the best team in the NFC East. But I'm fairly certain this team has Wild Card potential. The Cards have unloaded and lost a lot of key players. I doubt if the Vikings will have another run like they did last year. No Chester Taylor, an Adrian Peterson, who struggled down the stretch last season, will also be a year older. As far the NFC East goes, we all know there's usually not much separating the top four teams in the division. It comes down to solid coaching down the stretch and catching some breaks on the injury front.

I'm pretty darn exciting about 2010! Hail!

Btw...IMO...
- Dansby was overpaid.
- Rolle was paid a lot more than we were willing to spend on a safety
- Peppers was definitely overpaid
Tony Pashos is a fringe starting RT, Hicks is a fringe NFL player.

Pashos is a good signing if we draft a LT early, and fail to address the line again until late in the draft, we'll be alright with him and Heyer on the right side.

In general, no idea what the line rebuilding plan is. We're not targeting guys with zone blocking experience, and we've brought in a lot of guys. I'm sure Shanahan has a plan, I just hope it's better than, "sign some guys, get lucky".

Hicks has spent his whole career playing for Reid/Childress, and their zone blocking schemes more closely resemble Zorn's than Shanahan's. Not that it's a huge difference.
I don't mean to be a dick but I thought we only brought in 3 OL so far? Clifton was a zone blocking lineman. Pashos has worked with Foerster the OL coach while in San Fran. Foerster teaches zone blocking. Hicks as you have said is a zone blocker even though it might not be Shanahan's style he understands zone blocking.

Plus Pashos can play tackle and Hicks is a OG/LT. For whatever reason I think Pashos was a LT also so we have some options now. The only people who are not zone blockers are the LB Foote we are looking to talk to and Willie Parker. So basically we are bringing in zone blocking OL. At a reasonable price I might add vs. throwing money away like we have for the whole time Snyder has owned the team.

So far, we've re-signed Rabach and Mike Williams, who don't do any of that. Clifton is 34.

It's possible we're already doing that and I'm just oblivious, but I'm just seeing guys who have struggled to hold on to a starting job the last few years traipsing through here, and I'm skeptical. That's all.

When you see "3-year deal", and it being offered to a backup-quality lineman, you do have to wonder what the greater plan is. Usually with bargain-basement types, shorter contracts are in vogue.

Yes you have to wonder but one player who is a back up in one system might actually do rather well in another scheme. If Shanahan can get mid to late rounders to be the best OL in the NFL as he has with Denver then I presume he will do just as well with players who are from other teams but the same catagory.

I think its a job security thing. If there's a lockout, the players may be out of luck salary-wise.

Well GTtripp that is the problem with this year's fa ol pool. There just aren't any good quality guys out there. Unless we trade away draft picks for RFAs. There aren't going to be any guys in the background so to speak.

Prob not going to find a lot of underpublicized guys that are that good in UFA, after this many years they're either known well or not, unless they're sitting behind a damn good starter.

Would that line of thinking be right? I def don't follow enough other teams' lines to know.

What good does it do to say: "you're a nice player in a crappy class, come be a staple of our future."

Nothing is inherently wrong with either of these signings, as players who can help us win, but something doesn't quite smell right. Improvement is going to be slow, of course, but this is hardly even moving in the right direction.

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread

Something else that needs to be said, is that Mike Shanahan has not seen any of our current roster on the field with his staff. Once we get past the 15th off season workouts he and his staff will continue making the necessary moves. Any moves made right now are based off film and obvious needs (which makes me happy that they are bringing in the OL players first). i would imagine in the upcoming years as the staff has a familiarity with the players we would be a little more aggressive If needed players are available.

And of course, Vinnie left the cupboard pretty bare, BA doesn't have much leeway with picks as our line situation is harsh so we need all our picks and we have not accumulated them in the past so we have no extras to use so we really can't look at restricted as we may have liked.

It's really difficult to find a market niche elsewhere in football. Certain skills are under/overvalued all the time, but as far as a starting caliber player hidden on an NFL bench...you need to be well networked to tap that channel.

Thing is, our scouts are notoriously poor at evaluating the talent around the rest of the league. We've, historically, been much more successful projecting from the college level. BA can only work with the information that he's been given.

With Artis Hicks, we have a guy who was absolutely killed at the LT position in some limited time this year. Batiste'd, if you will. Pashos is a RT with no versatility to play anywhere else. RT and utility lineman are both needs, but three year contracts suggest that there won't be competition. That's a pricey release.

My hope is to trade down from the #4 spot for multiple picks in order to pick up some of those mid to late rounders. I keep holding out hope that this is the plan. I want more good draftees, and not one high priced one at #4. I think Allenhan-ShanAllen can do it.

I think if we sign Willie Parker then Portis is gone. It's just a hunch on my part, but from the beginning I believed Shanny will draft a RB and have probably one other main carrier on the roster. Portis looked awful most of last season and then of course there's the concussion. With LT, Westbrook showing how quickly even great RBs hit their wall I think the FO looks to dump Portis soon.

It's hard to say. Can you call either one of them the definitive starter? Probably not. I'd take Portis over Parker at this point, assuming clean bill of health from each. Don't know that we'll take an RB high enough to guarantee a start. We'll address the position but I don't think that we'll end up with THAT guy.
