i can say this about every FA but ...... id like him for the right price.
Had we let Rak go then he would be an obvious choice. Not the case so we have no use for him.
You said yourself he would get 2 million, that is not several, Thats barely anything, and he isnt just a 30 year old backup
Whatever his price is he's going to want guaranteed money. Too many holes to fill on this team and a back up rb isn't one of them.

What Sproles can do isnt an area of need.
We need to spend this cap money on linemen and the secondary.
We dont have the luxury of having luxurys......

Plus I want to see what Chris Thompson can do for us. He was supposed to be our Sproles at the league minimum.

Playmakers are always a need.

Especially one that can line up all over the field and return kicks too.

Does anyone think that we can sign Ward or Mitchell for under 6.5 mil? If so, I don't see any reason why we can't add Ward and Talib.

skinsfaninok 03-10-2014 06:51 PM

I bet we only sign a few named players Nothing crazy

How is a proven dynamic PR/KR a luxury of luxuries. Sproles wasn't cut for performance, he was a cap hell casualty, and if he came here (at around what his contract would have been this year) it would be a solid move by the Skins FO.

Remember how bad our ST's were? and a dynamic screen game plays to Griffin's strengths, just mixing those with Garcon's screens would force the defense to play the whole field.
Sproles >>>> Helu
Apparently, you and Paintrain and perhaps a few others value Helu a lot less than I do. In 2011, he put up 3 TDs and over 1,000 yards from scrimmage. Last season, complimenting Morris, he carved out a nice role, getting 4 TDs and over 500 yards from scrimmage. In my opinion, he's very valuable as a 3rd down back and backup. And we all know Gruden made good use of 2 RBs in Cincy, so I expect Helu to have the same or even more success next year. Sproles is better, but there's not a big gap between the two.

That being said, I'd still like to see Sproles here, mostly for the KR\PR side of him. We would need to be careful how much we used him offensively because Morris does better when he's heavily involved in the offense, and Helu already takes enough snaps away.

I like Helu as the primary backup, but Sproles is a much better 3rd down back and receiver out of the backfield. I'm not choosing between the two.

Exactly. Getting weapons for RGIII is a definite need.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents

I think we should definitely take a look at Roger Saffold and Zane Beadles. Add those two to the right side, draft a center, and BOOM, offensive line is no longer the liability it once was. Just worry about the price Saffold might command, and the Rams let him go to save some cap space....

Mitchell will be under $6.5... he has only started 1 year, and misses lots of tackles

Sproles is a offensive weapon as a receiver and can return punts. He would upgrade our offense..

So you have no confidence that Thompson will be able to grow into this role? That remains to be seen. But this has been the problem around here, not having the ability to develop our own players, or not doing it enough.

Ya, anything more than 4 per and I think we overspent on an area we could have brought bodies in to compete for, and take the best two out of the bunch. But I guess something has to be said for continuitys sake. Riley was definitely the best ILB we had last year, maybe with him as the lead LB, he can grow and become an all pro? Who knows, I just wish we had a new DC, I still cannot believe that Haslett is still going to be on the sidelines........

Signing a playmaker like Sproles isn't the same as not developing our own. Thompson was a 5th round draft pick from last year, who was out with injury. If anything, bringing Sproles in on a reasonable two year deal would let us develop Thompson properly. Expecting him to be a Sproles - like playmaker after being put on IR his rookie(only) season is likewise overvaluing our own player and missing an opportunity to take advantage of another team's poor salary cap management.

I didn't see anything from him last year that would make me pass over a proven player like Sproles.

We have homegrown players in Morris and Helu already in the backfield.

wow, can you imagine that guy explaining and guiding this team. For his justification of his idea he took one play (an intercepted pass) from a game that the Bengals offense scored 27 points, and won the game to show why a new offensive co-ordinator will improve the Bengals, THEN realize the question was about how the Redskins would do under Gruden... mind blowing.

hypothetical discussion if VC had still been with the Redskins at the time of TW's drafting
DS: What do you think of Trent Williams
VC: Man, The Terps have this LT that just blew away the Sooners DE.
DS: Well what about TW?
VC: Just think if the Terps LT does that, and TW practices against that DE every day, just what does that say about TW.
DS: ??
VC: All I'm saying is that the Terps LT sure blew him off the line on that one play
DS: the Terps LT blew off TW? wait, so are you saying we should get the Terps guy?

and so on in an infinite loop of vc mumbo speak

To me, RB is one of the fee strengths on this team. Although Helu is not as elusive as Sproles, he's more than capable of catching the ball out of the backfield. We just have too many other needs...tackle, guard, interior pass rusher, LB, secondary, WR..even TE.
