Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
From PFF, nice note on Roullier
A few offensive lines were held back by injuries in 2017, but none were more injury-riddled than the Redskins, who had 12 different players play at least 50 pass-block snaps throughout the season. All told, the Redskins surrendered 181 pressures on 606 passing plays, including 35 QB hits, the fifth-most among offensive lines. There were bright spots, however, as left tackle Trent Williams, despite playing with an injury, proved once again that he’s one of the best offensive tackles in football by being the only left tackle in the league to register 350 pass-block snaps without allowing a sack. The Redskins also got a nice rookie season from center Chase Roullier, who ended the campaign with a pass-blocking efficiency of 98.4, the highest rating recorded by a rookie center since Nick Mangold (99.4) in 2006. If they can stay healthy, the Redskins have the making of one of the better offensive lines in football as we look ahead to 2018. |

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
Interesting stuff here from PFF on Inside LB play last year. Mason Foster was rated as the most productive pass rusher from the Inside LB spot. Martrell Spaight was the most efficient run stopper in the league from this spot. And Zach Vigil was 3rd best in passer rating allowed when targeted.
I think all of those things make sense - Spaight is know as a thumper and Vigil did surprisingly well in coverage last year, he acquitted himself well. The problem is Spaight may be good against the run but he's a disaster in coverage, and Vigil may have defended the pass well but not well enough to avoid being heavily targeted by QBs. Anecdotally, he always was a step behind. I believe his slow read and reaction stood out more in coverage because you can clearly see the space between where he was compared to where he should be. I think a SLIGHTLY (not glaring) slow read and reaction by a defender, especially a linebacker can be masked a bit because he usually has some distance when he begins to close on the ball. When Brown and Foster were healthy, they were making stops for losses and only slight gains. It seems like Spaight was making his sure handed tackles after the player had already gained yardage. (i'm sure injuries to the DLine contributed to this) Spaight just always seemed a step behind to me. The coaches saw something they didn't like at the end of the year. Despite all the injuries, he didn't get the playing time a true 2nd stringer should have gotten. I think he is on the roster bubble this year and struggles to make the team. Thoughts? |
Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
I think Spaight's greatest liability is that he lacks the speed and quickness to start at the pro level. At his combine, he only ran a 4.88 forty and he had the slowest 3-Cone time in the LB group. I admire him because, although he lacks the some of the athletic gifts others at the pro level have been given, he has worked and studied very hard to earn his place on an NFL roster. Nevertheless, it looks like he may never be a starter because of his relative lack of speed and quickness and, as a reserve, he'll always be fighting for a roster spot over other players who are more athletic than himself.
|
Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
Yeah as really despite having the lack of speed and quickness needed. He will always play the backup role unfortunately.

Brown is awesome against the run. He isn't very good in coverage but I don't care, he needs to be going after the ball carrier at all times. Foster is coming back from a shoulder injury that put him on IR last year. It's risky banking on him playing 16 games this year so we need backups. I don't agree with what has been said about Spaight, Him and Brown are the only linebackers that made plays in the backfield. He has good speed and is aggressive. Now his angles to the ball carrier suck. he is too aggressive at time. He is a ST coverage guy and a last resort backup. Vigil will be coaching HS football in September but will be back around week8 when players start falling apart.. Buchanon will be our backup ILB and he is coming off an ACL injury, Yikes. We really need Foster and Nicholson to stay healthy. |

But I maintain that Vigil is a real solid back up and will do the job when asked, he has very decent physical skills and could be helped by good DL play. As for Foster, shoulders are a fragile articulation, but are fixed well. The fact is that Spaight is slow for an NFL LB. He has been timed consistently at between 4.80 and 4.88 in the forty. Vigil did a good job for us last season. I think he has a shot at making the season opening roster. |

Harvey-Clemons is one to watch. Because of Hamilton injury history, they might just bring him along, not show too much and stash on practice squad. Really just depends on his Health. IMO, its gonna be Virgil vs Spaight for one spot, unless Harvey-Clemons completely shits the bed preseason. |

Agree. H-C was 217 lbs when drafted. He's now listed at 230 lbs, so he's less of a tweener now. He also has height and length to go with 35" arms and huge hands. If he's ready to play more, he could definitely make passes harder to complete. |

Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
P Rich had 8 drops on 52 catchable passes last yr, 8th worst drop % in the league. He's got to get better at that as well.
|
Re: Redskins Offseason Thread
The key stat though is that Richardson had only 52 catchable balls thrown at him. You have to ask why - Doug Baldwin was their best WR so of course he draws the most but that Seattle offensive line was dismal. Wilson was running for his life on so, so many plays. And when speed is your #1 asset like it is for Richardson, it's just not very often that Wilson can find you.
Richardson's QB this year will be protected by stud Ts guarding the edges plus Scherff up the middle. I'm confident in Roullier too. Even if Richardson continues to drop balls at the same % rate, he'll have more targets just by virtue of the fact that Smith will be protected well enough. I don't know about 1000 yards but I definitely see him coming through with better numbers than he had in Seattle. His real value is the deep threat combined with the strong protection - defenses will be forced to play him deep leaving 7 man fronts for Guice. We finally have a runner than can make a defense pay for consistent 7 man fronts. If Guice is 4.5 yards per carry like I think he'll be, then Paul Richardson is one of the first guys he'll have to thank for it. |
