Wolves is corny AF but whatever let's just get this over with and move on.
Has there ever been any Wolf sighting in the DC area? LOL I just think they will go with something for the history of the city / team. But I agree, at this point I don't care and to go 2 full years as WFT just to change everything again is also stupid |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Pretty much in line with the process and calendar they announced times and times again. Sorry but people thinking WFT has a legit chance at sticking around haven't been paying attention.
Can you imagine for one sec how pathetic and unprofessional they would look if it took them 2 years and trillions of fans (+almuni, sponsors etc...) input, to say, "hey you know what ? We didn't need all that amazing, thorough and absolutely indispensable process we talked about so much, the temporary name we had found in 2 weeks works just fine" ? (If you like WFT, that's fine, it's a subjective thing, just saying from a process and coherence standpoint it doesn't stand a chance).
Its about much more than just picking a name and from what the Sports Junkies (a local DC sports talk show) were saying the tricky thing isn't the name, its the trademark for that name. A big problem with something like WFT is that its too generic to be trademarked (like trademarking yellow lemon) but it also sounds like there are ways to tighten up the trademark application. I would not rule out them using the name WFT or WFC. What I would rule out is anything with the word "red" in it. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Sucks that Warriors is out. If you look at the dictionary definition there's nothing that directly ties it specifically to Native Americans but whatever, people have become so fucking over sensitive that using the term owner may be on it's way out. I agree about the Warriors definition but according to what the announcement said its also about context and they feel Warriors in the context of a new name for the Redskins has too much connotation to Native American imagery. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
So does that mean GS has to stop using "Warriors" also?
This country is so pussified now |

Right there with you. Wolves? That has zero connection to our region and this team. I will find it hard to embrace wolves. I thought warriors were the best of a bad bunch. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
That's why I like football team. A little FU to the PC police.
|
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Yeah same here but it looks like FT will not be the choice.. Dan slipped up and said "Football Club" the other day.. I wouldn't hate a "D.C Football Club" type name

Same .. I thought it had the right pinch of "malicious compliance" and just seemed like a natural fit for this climate. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
It won't be the Warriors, yes!!!!!!!! That name is already used. That was my least favorite choice. So at least it won't be that.
Wolves is no more corny than any other animal team name. And Wolves are bad-fucking-ass. But I don't think that will be the name either. |

Why bother changing from team to club though? Club is just another way of referring to a team or franchise. I didn't take it was Snyder messing up and revealing the next name. I can only imagine the mocking that would come from taking 2 years to go from team to club. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
In Oklahoma with so many Native tribes, I was around plenty of NA's.. A WOLF is literally the most iconic symbol to 99% of the tribes
|
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
I like Washington Football Club more than Team, don't ask me why. Team seems too generic, football club seems prestigious when compared to Euro soccer clubs I guess.
I was warming up to Warriors, but if Native Americans are uncomfortable with that too guess that's out (even though Warrior doesn't specifically refer to them I can understand why they feel associated with it). Redwolves - even though the red wolf is apparently native to the DC area I never connected with it so no loss to me. 40k suggested names, gotta be at least one good one in there. Obviously they are consulting with NA's during this process. Seems like a smart idea. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
In the spirit of that engagement, I want to address a name that has emerged amongst our fanbase, "Warriors." One might look at this name as a natural, and even harmless transition considering that it does not necessarily or specifically carry a negative connotation. But as we learned through our research and engagement with various groups, "context matters" and that makes it a "slippery slope." Feedback from across communities we engaged clearly revealed deep-seated discomfort around Warriors, with the clear acknowledgment that it too closely aligns with Native American themes. Such an embrace of potentially Native-adjacent iconography and imagery would not represent a clear departure that many communities have so forcefully advocated for us to embrace, and that frankly, we set out to do when we started this process a year ago.

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
They're not going to go with Football Club or Football Team permanently. For one, Football Team was determined to be too vague to qualify for a trademark, so Snyder can't even stop others from making bank off of it with knock off T Shirts.
Second, he's going to want a brand and logo that gets kids excited. The merchandising value there is significant, both in the short term and the long. |

Though I'm under no illusions that I'm going to like the new name until I see them win with it. They'll always be the Redskins to me until they win a championship under the new name. The gravity of our attachment is based on the strength of those championship memories. If you're old enough to remember 1991 and prior, then you still think of them as the Redskins, and that won't change until they give you a reason to. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
DC FC when our rivals are Dallas Cowboys(DC) that would be an epic fail.

Different but still generic AF. They can't go out and announce a name change from team to club with a straight face. I find it awfully hard to believe club wasn't also on the table when the change to football team was made. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Glad there's a timeline on it now but damn it's a long ways away. I guess there was really no choice but to wait until after the 2022 season, if they didn't announce the name change before the draft. Assuming the announcement will be after the Super Bowl and before the draft in 2022.

I'm sure they have the new logo and design ready, and uniforms too. I just hope they keep this W is some fashion, it's a sick logo |

The announcement said there are going to be blogs and other announcements that keep fans in the loop as to how the new name was determined. Knowing how this f'd-up organization operates and with all the chaos and urgency of getting rid of Redskins I can easily see WFC never occurring to them. Plus people are in the mindset of NFL organizations being teams not clubs. As a previous post says, I also think they have already decided on a name, logo, uniforms, etc. but the process of trademarks and league approvals takes time and they definitely want to have all their ducks in a row. |

So obviously they aren't wearing those shirts for the cool Man U logo (barely discernable on the shirt) they are wearing them because Man U wins. Kids aren't buying a loser team's shirt no matter how cool the logo might look. If Washington wins nobody will care what the name and logo are. |

We can say for sure it's not going to be Redskins, Warriors, Team, or Club.
We can say for sure its not the first or second names listed. You cant tell me Real Madrid Football Club, Liverpool Football Club, etc. aren't trademarked and they're no less generic than WFC. I got the impression from the Sports Junkies this morning that the problem was with how the trademark application was filed. The Sports Junkies were saying how when they went to trademark "The Sports Junkies" the application was kicked back as too generic so their trademark attorney tightened it up (I'm not sure what that really means and they didn't get specific) and they got their trademark. I can easily see Washington doing the same thing. Look at LFC logo and its an elaborate shield, I suspect for Washington to get something like WFC or WFT trademarked they'd have to make their logo more specific than a gold W. I don't know why they cant just call themselves Washington Football and forget the Team or Club. In the end I don't think they will go with Team or Club, they will pick some stupid name which everyone will find laughable. |

Again, to me arguing about such a subjective thing as a name is kinda useless, all we can do is voice our opinions, and try to understand their process, with the elements they're giving us. And for many reasons, WFT/C just doesn't fit their process. Envoyé de mon SHV48 en utilisant Tapatalk |

One thing from Jason Wright's piece, I wouldn't be sure any "red" name is out, because of this part:
" Though I wasn't here for the rescinding of the name, I believe it was done with faith that the connective ties of this fan base run deep and that the deeply loved traditions and positive aspects of our identity can be preserved and even enhanced under a new name that does not offend any member of our community." |

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
They are saying the new name will not have any connection to native Americans… that strikes me odd .. so now it seems any connection to NA is considered bad? I do know that Indians, braves, chiefs all have had some criticism for team name .. dang I just never realized that using Native American theme was somehow wrong … I’m ready to move on to the next stage … my bet is it’s a patriotic or military based name and that will bring in a whole new level of criticism.. we shall see .. red wolves is starting to sound good …,

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Well warriors was my 2 choice of those under consideration (for the very reason they eliminated it).

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Interesting on the Sports Junkies this morning that they were talking about the possibility of the team being called Capital City instead of Washington. That could be one way of tightening up the trademark application and be Capital City Football Club CCFC instead of WFT or WFC.

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Losing Washington might suck more than Redskins.

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Wouldn't surprise me if they are holding off on announcing the new name to coordinate with a new stadium announcement too. And if the plan works out to build a new stadium in DC than the Washington name could definitely be out.

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins

It would be strange not calling them Washington. Personally I'd love to see them make a radical change and a total break from the past. I don't want them being called Washington (insert animal or military rank). Its just the same old same old. I wouldn't mind a color change but I get that with all the player movement the only thing fans have left is the name and the colors and with the name change the colors have to stay. IMO CCFC gives them the best chance to keep the colors. |
