Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
And I believe that the issue might be, and this is just a shot in the dark, that Fred "BongHit" Davis is a little unsure of the situation. Im thinking that he has himself convinced that he got franchised, got a year's payday at a top 5 Pro Tight End pay, gets injured, and didn't really blow the socks off of anyone even when he was healthy last year, and now the market has dried up for TE's, all the good and healthy ones are off the market. He wants a longer contract than one or two years, but that is all we are offering, and mind you, at an EXTREME discount compared to his top 5 pay year. Slightly above average play for a half of a year, then blowing out your knee is not the potion if you want a huge payday in the NFL. Especially not after being one joint puff away from being out of the sport for a year.
I know that was long winded, but I think Fred Davis hasn't signed because the realization is just now hitting him that he isn't gonna get even HALF the payday he thought he would, and he is just holding out hope. Ultimately, even if someone offers him a better deal by a little, I still think he comes back here. Why you might ask? Because signing a short deal to stay in Washington with a top 5 NFL quarterback that will inflate your stats, so if and when you DO hit the open market, three years removed from the stupid suspension, you will have a healthy knee, are a proven veteran that is still quite young, so you are in a much better position to demand top dollar. That is compared to this year, when even Cleveland isn't knocking down your door, and you just tore your ACL. His best bet is to stay put, and RG3 will basically set the market for him next year, or in two years if he signs a 2 year deal with Washington. Ultimately, I think FD returns here this year. And then after he proves himself, in more ways than just one, he will get his money, and long term deal to stay a Redskin for a longo timo. |
So why haven't we talked to Brent Grimes? He is a top 10 CB when healthy, he just came off an Achilles injury (so his money value goes down) and he's been on the market still after 5 days of FA (Value should go down again) I know we're tight with cap money, but I feel like he could just squeeze in there.
Also speaking of FAs coming off an Achilles injury. Why haven't we worked out a deal with Fred Davis? Whats the hold up? Is it still the cap. Fred had what one interested team (Cleveland?) and hasn't found it as a fit. He wants us and we want him. Lets make a deal Fred. This is getting ridiculous.
Just as I suspected. Here is you answer. @Rich_Campbell: No surprise here, but cap-strapped Redskins aren't pursuing free-agent CB Nnamdi Asomugha or Brent Grimes, per sources. Too expensive. |

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
The allure of having Talib here was that he would have fixed the CB issue for multiple years, instead of just one. But even with him having signed with NE, the CB market is still very deep. We can sit around until the draft and we'll still be able to sign someone who is an improvement over what we had at the position last year. And in the draft, we'll be able to find starting corners in the third round. Multiple, if we wish.
Safety is a bit dicier. There aren't a ton of great FA options out there (at this point, you either overpay for the decline years of Michael Huff/Bernard Pollard, or you're not getting a starter) and while the draft has a number of quality safeties, it's not quite as loaded as corner is. I think we're going to trade down from (perhaps out of) the second round, and it may be tough to improve the safety position at this point. The best options at safety might be internal, you have: Meriweather, Tanard Jackson, DeJon Gomes, Reed Doughty, Jordan Bernstine, and Jordan Pugh all under contract for next year. That's five guys who have started games in this league, and a 7th round pick from last season. It would probably be a failure to not add any competition whatsoever at the safety position, but it's going to be tough to do better than what we already have right now. |

So if we lose Fred Davis to Cleveland, who do you all see us signing to replace to him? Or do we look to the draft? Also, is there any word about whether Davis is leaning toward staying or leaving?

Well last that HTTR247 said that we both want each other and we're trying to work out a deal with him. Cleveland is so far the only team that he said has shown interest in him. I see lots of TEs in the draft whether Davis stays or goes. Escobar - the spanish gronkowski as I call him Jordan Reed- Florida guy whose game is similar to Freds (great WR, poor blocker) Vance McDonald- Rice kid who is athletic and versatile Ryan Otten- San Jose st guy who put up good numbers, but his QB is considered a top 3 QB for next year so maybe his numbers should have been better Travis Kelce- NFL bloodlines, fast good hands. Looks like Brent Celek. Phillip Lutzenkirchen- Auburn boy who was hurt this year but was a beast the previous 2 years, especially with Cam. Hardworker who gets the job done. |

We haven't heard Dishman's name in so long but he was great in 1997 and we said goodbye to him after he had a lousy 1998. I like the notion of drafting a safety instead of signing one. There's Phillip Thomas who was the best defensive back in the nation last year. He can play both safety positions and he's a ball hawk. He does nothing but snuffs out the run, plays the pass well, and causes lots of turnovers. Because he went to Fresno State which is a program that is not a powerhouse, he's very underrated. But if our scouting department has done their homework then we might be able to draft him because he's not projected to be drafted until the late 2nd round. The Redskins are taking a risk on keeping Tanard Jackson. Hopefully that year long suspension has taught him a lesson. Brandon Meriweather looked great in the one game he played. He's certainly a projected starter. Reed Doughty is a solid reserve safety that has proven his work regardless who type of defense he plays in. Gomes did well as a rookie but he took some steps back last season. |

Carrier was actually a trade. We swapped 5th rounders with St. Louis. That is how little they thought of him. They gained 15 spots in the 5th round. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
Kind of sort of off topic but did not want to start a new thread for one question...
How come we have not received any compensatory picks for our lost free agents? 1. Carlos Rogers 2. L. Alexander 3. Laron Landry How does the compensation work? Do the Skins have to show interest first or an attempt to resign? I do not think that we have received any comp picks in while, am I wrong? |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
Found this online.....Compensatory picks
In addition to the 32 picks in each round, there are a total of 32 picks awarded at the ends of Rounds 3 through 7. These picks, known as "compensatory picks," are awarded to teams that have lost more qualifying free agents than they gained the previous year in free agency. Teams that gain and lose the same number of players but lose higher-valued players than they gain also can be awarded a pick, but only in the seventh round, after the other compensatory picks. Compensatory picks cannot be traded, and the placement of the picks is determined by a proprietary formula based on the player's salary, playing time, and postseason honors with his new team, with salary being the primary factor. So, for example, a team that lost a linebacker who signed for $2.5 million per year in free agency might get a sixth-round compensatory pick, while a team that lost a wide receiver who signed for $5 million per year might receive a fourth-round pick. If fewer than 32 such picks are awarded, the remaining picks are awarded in the order in which teams would pick in a hypothetical eighth round of the draft (These are known as "supplemental compensatory selections"). Compensatory picks are awarded each year at the NFL annual meeting which is held at the end of March; typically, about three or four weeks before the draft. Source(s): National Football League Draft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I would think the first rounders we lost would get us 3rd or 4th rounders? |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
You are right in the interest and availability to sign players being equal to picks. LL and CR were signed to 1yr prove it deals and we were prepared to see them walk.
I do not know if we would get a pick for LA simply based on the fact that we signed him to a UDFA contract initially and did not draft him. I do not know if the rule still applies to players you develope and lose even though they were not drafted. If we had drafted LA his situation would be one that would garner a compensatory pick. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
comp picks are FA lost vs FAs gained. if we lose rogers and sign haynesworth, there's no comp pick there. if we lose rogers and sign no one... probably a 3rd rounder (since he went to the pro bowl that year).
|
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
I did forget about the adding players of value though. That's why when we lost LL we didn't get one because of PG signing. The year we let CR walk we signed Bowen, Cofield, Wilson, and OJ A.

Arians was just in Indy and trades him to his old team; That would be an interesting move. nfldraftscout said that Fitz wasn't going to happen but if Irsay is really telling the truth, then it would make sense to bring in Fitz. Fitz, Reggie Wayne (he could also be apart of the deal), Hilton. That team just got real good. |
I do think the Chicken Littles up in here need to take a pill. Our secondary will be so much better next year because of the presence of Brandon Meriweather alone. They will come up with a passable CB either through the draft or through patience in free agency.
And has everyone forgotten how Reed Doughty performed at the end of the year? Dude may have turned a corner.
I'm confident our secondary will be improved, but not sure about the above. Merriwether's injury history is really, really concerning at this point. I think we'd be irresponsible to count on him. Luckily, Doughty is turning into a fine wine of sorts and improving with age (experience really), so we're probably ok at SS even without adding a starter. Gotta add starting FS talent though, no two ways about it. Our 2013 starting FS CANNOT be on the roster today or else we'll still have a bottom of the league defense :( |
Highly unlikely.
First of all. free agency isn't over yet. It is very likely that we'll sign a veteran CB to start opposite Josh Wilson. Secondly, the situations of Brandon Meriweather and Tanard Jackson (the two projected starting safeties last season) are unknown at this time. Thirdly, nobody knows if the Skins will even draft two DB's, much less who those players might be and what positions they might play if the Skins draft any of them. Beyond that, the odds of any 2nd or 3rd or later round DB starting in his rookie year are exttemely low.
I can almost guarantee that they will draft at least two defensive backs seeing as right now our only real starter is Josh Wilson, and it is not out of them realm of possibility that a 2nd or 3rd round rookie could start seeing that it happens all the time. |

I would think the longer FA goes, the more the team will save on costs. If the FO has people in mind for DBs and they know interest is low why rush.

Because there are few decent CB options left. Check the FA lists. The law of supply and demand says that the remaining good ones will not necessarily come much cheaper than the ones that signed before them. |

Simply put, your plan would be too risky. Do you want to take a chance on regressing from a 10-6 record and missing the playoffs this coming season? I don't. The idea is to get better, not to rely on the chance that rookie CB (whoever that may be) can perform adequately at a starting CB spot. The worst (and possibly best) case scenario at this point might be to re-sign DHall. That way, we're probably no worse off at CB than we were last season. |

Simultaneously, load up on DB's in the draft. In this way we've looked after both the short-term and the long-term. Then we can hope that Crawford or a rookie can develop enough to make significant contributions this year, which would make this plan even stronger. |

Returning Hall and drafting in the defensive backfield, to me is not taking a step back. More of a lateral move with the hope of hitting in the draft. CB and FS are our most pressing concerns at the point. A RT would be nice this year, but with the cap penalties we are screwed. When you think of both Volmer and Winston sitting out there not garnering any interest, it just kills me to think that we could have a great offensive line if we could just get some of our cash back. BUT that is never going to happen so F*$K YOU Goodell. |
Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013
I agree, bringing back Hall, who played solidly last year, is not a downgrade. It would actually help the team's position financially because he'd have to come back with reduced pay, freeing up some of our precious little cap room for some reinforcements around him.
I'd love to bring him back to play FS. I think he'd excel in that role as a ball-hawking centerfielder. There are plenty of quality FA CBs not getting signed yet. We'll get someone before the draft I bet. Starting Wilson with a good FA CB and Crawford/Minnifield at nickel will be more than adqeuate. Then, we should draft more secondary. If Meriweather, Minnifield and T. Jackson can stay on the field, that will go a long way towards improvement. If we're so thin that we're down to Pugh and Bernstine again at safety, we'll be screwed again. |

We should do that with the return of those three key defensive guys. |
