Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
I am not sure what the big deal is with the amount of money tied into guard. It is a lot but we have the cap space this year might as well use it. Plus both BS and EF are likely gone after this year. I really don't see them picking up 2022 on Flowers unless they view him as BS replacement next year,

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Maybe the plan is to move Scherff, or finally sign him to a LTD, or cut other guys, I dunno. Either way I could care less about the $$. Until we see the final plan come together I'll hold off on saying we spent too much at guard or not.
|
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Could be missing something but doesn't this mean we will probably not sign an OL at 19?
|
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
for the accountants here
@Adam Schefter To make his trade to Washington from Miami official, OL Ereck Flowers restructured his contract whereby the Dolphins will pay $6 million in a signing bonus and Washington will pay a $3 million base salary, giving Flowers $9M fully guaranteed this year, per @DrewJRosenhaus |

This.. It's comical how some people act as if it's their own money or the contracts are preventing WFT from signing more players. As long as it doesn't hinder the team's ability to sign FA players, who cares? |

This changes a lot of the conjecture about how much we have tied up in the interior line. |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Big win if he's only costing us $3 million.

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
One interesting tidbit that has no effect on the Redskins or the Dolphins but does on Fisher is that $6m Miami paid him for this year will not be subject to State Taxes.
Big win if he's only costing us $3 million.
Spotrac's updated page shows it costing us $3M this year, 10M next year. With the restructure, Miami splits the dead cap between this year and next $5/$3. What I like also is that if Flowers agreed to the restructure, he likely signed off on coming back to Washington. They likely wouldn't outright cut him and take the whole hit at once. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
The #Dolphins and Washington Football Team are in agreement on a trade to send guard Ereck Flowers to WFT in a deal involving a swap of late-round picks, sources say. The deal is being finalized. Frees up some money for Miami, while giving Washington an OL to compete to start.
There goes the Guard pick in RD1
Another solid move. I don't think it changes the draft plan though. He comes cheaper than his first stint in 2019, and will compete for a starting spot. The O-line is deeper now. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
As for no longer drafting guard at 19 only one I've seen mentioned before was Tucker and he is still an option as he plays tackle very well as well.
|
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
That's a big win for us, wise cap wise and gives us a really solid LG. He played well for us, good move from a culture standpoint too IMO : he has to pumped to comeback play for the team that, as was said here, saved his career !
|
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Love the move for Flowers. He was good here. Will be again. So he will replace Schweitzer on the left side? Still need a LT. Than we have a damn good OL.

We need a LT which could be the 19th pick. Flowers is LG. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
$3M cap hit this year, nothing guaranteed to him next year, so next year if you want to cut him, no dead cap hit. Outstanding move.
I don’t think it changes anything for Scherff. I think he’ll be gone after this season anyway. And I don’t see him getting traded before that, I think he subscribes to the Kirk Cousins theory of make your way to free agency to find out your worth, I don’t think he’ll agree to a long term deal with an acquiring team because he wants to hit the open market. As for G, this is a depth play that indicates that they’re not comfortable with the recovery of Charles, or not comfortable with Schweitzer as a starter, or envision Charles competing at T, or a combination of these. I still think they will look to draft a LT in this draft. Either way, good depth pickup. Can’t have too many capable offensive linemen. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
While I'd love for BS to stick around long term, it really looks like we're being played by the same tactic Kirk Cousins used.
We're already paying too much for a Guard on the tag, and since he hasn't budged and signed long term, it appears he's bolting after this season. So instead of overpaying for a Guard this year that we're losing anyways, I fully support getting something in return for him right now.
Except that everyone knows they can get him next year without giving up picks. There are very few teams going oh my God, if we just had that stud RG we would totally be SB contenders, we'd better trade the farm because that RG will put us over the top, for a player making $18M fully guaranteed with a 1 in 3 change of being healthy. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Love the Flowers trade. Shouldn’t change our draft strategy. A top prospect will slide, and be there for us at 19 (Darrisaw, Vera-Tucker, Parsons, D. Smith, JOK).
Out of those 5, I’d take 1. Parsons 2. D. Smith 3. Darrisaw 4. Vera Tucker 5. JOK I’m not a fan of JOK, I think we need a true LB, not a hybrid, which ironically is the problem right now with Collins and Rivera. |
Ereck Flowers - Regrade
Ereck Flowers - LG - A
New details have emerged. We traded down 14 spots in 7th round, swapping 7th with Miami. On a draft trade value chart, with #1 pick 3000 points, we gave up 1 point. Essentially nothing. Knowing our luck, someone will pick the next Tom Brady with the pick we traded, LOL, but all kidding aside, we gave up almost nothing. Also, Miami is paying $6M of Flowers' salary, we are paying $3M. Miami must be dying for cap relief, LOL. Giving up virtually nothing in trade, and getting a player much better than Schweitz for about 60% of the price is a win-win, even if only for a year and on a contract that expires after 2022 and pays $9M next year. This is essentially a free 3rd or 4th round pick in terms of player value if he can regain old form. One thing to remember is it is easy to look great next to Trent Williams because he is so talented, LOL, so Flowers may not regain previous heights at LG but still has potential. You have to grade this an A signing. One other interesting note on this trade is that there were reportedly several interested teams, but Miami wanted to be fair to Flowers. Flowers wanted to come here because he loved the coaches, the culture, and the players and felt that was why he flourished. Such things really do matter, obviously, and if THE DAN can actually not meddle several more years, this factor should increase. One main reason we signed Jackson, for example, was his desire to look awesome behind our DL and then sign a HUGE final deal in 3 years (and I'm not bashing him for that). You have to rate this trade an A given new info, especially the insurance it gives us at G with Scherff. We can now let Scherff walk and have a replacement 75% as good optimistically, at half the price or less. If Flowers blows we are out $3M with no long term effect after this year, so the downside is minimal. SOLID A grade, for a mid-tier roster move. |

I think he might stay here if he is made the highest paid G with obscene guarantees, otherwise he is gone. No one is trading a high pick and having to pay him a huge deal. Simply not happening barring major injuries to contender. Any smart team could simply draft a G and pay him $17M a year less, rather than trading picks to us to do the same thing. |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Having 3 starting quality starting guards going into the year is big and now gives us insurance after Schreff leaves. Ismel still there too as developing guard/center. I do think this removes interior Oline off the board early for the draft.
If we grab a tackle during the draft, the Oline room will be packed. Should make for a great competition and a strong unit going into the season. |

Correct. We had a pieced-together O-Line that year and they played well. Flowers especially. |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
I'd be surprised if they don't draft at least two O-linemen still; either two OTs, or a G/C and an OT.
I don't think the Flowers move takes anything off the table for that first pick. If there's a highly graded O-lineman there at 19, they still have to consider him. I hope they go LB or S, but if they decide to make the O-line even better with that pick, I won't hate it. |

Just saw KJ Wright and Kwon Alexander are still available, what would you think of Wright on a 1yr deal/Alexander on a long term deal to go along Holcomb and (hopefully) a highly drafted rookie ?
Post draft they'd have to review their salary's expectations down, wouldn't they ? Maybe even Alexander would want a 1yr prove it deal. Envoyé de mon SHV48 en utilisant Tapatalk |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
I watched the coaches film of our game against the Bengals last year, keeping a eye on William Jackson III on one side and Darby on the other.
I think the upgrade is clear and obvious. WJ3 seems to be a very good and physical corner. Played press coverage against Terry most of the game, and was really efficient doing so. Darby (who I thought had a good season with us last year) was playing off coverage and had some suspect footwork at times. A couple very good plays by WJ3 vs Terry: On top, no comment needed : Bottom, WJ3 is supposed to have inside help by the safety (I'm guessing some sort of Cover 3) who bites on the post route by Cam Sims, and despite not having inside help he has air tight coverage, Terry just makes an incredible catch: |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Disclaimer: I'm aware Brandon Scherff currently is our best lineman, and one of the top G in the league. I love him as a player, always have.
This is just to my point that I didn't feel like last season was his best one. And maybe people seriously studying tape disagree with me, and maybe overall on the whole season I'm just dead wrong. I just had plays like this flashing in my head, and stumbled on this one rewatching last year game agains the Bengals (see post above), and felt like, maybe because he was playing banged up, he was not at the top of this game: |

He misses tons of games, a third historically, and then is banged up much of time he starts, no way we should be paying a guy like that a huge long-term deal. I still firmly believe that sticking point was guarantees in contract, overall and for injury, not total monetary value. I have seen plays where guys just run right by him like a statue totally healthy, on pass protection. Not tons of them, but only takes one to get your QB killed. Let some other team pay him a fortune and we'll take the comp pick. Not hating on him, but is the smart business decision. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
Finally, just another random play I stumbled on, to remind everybody that, despite the comeback story being absolutely awesome, despite the man being incredibly inspiring, Alex Smith wasn't a great fit here, and, except a couple of games, wasn't playing very well for us.
Don't know if there's a coverage snaffu or if WJ3 has the flat and just bites on the checkdown too early... Anyway Terry is wide open but Alex throws the checkdown. Still a 1st down but could've been a lot more. |
Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
FrenchSkins, thanks for the posts. I agree with the Jackson post, he will be a great addition to the defense.
I just found an interesting nugget about Scherff and contract talks - there is one podcast that had an interview with Logan Paulson (our old TE) recently, he said that Scherff wasn't happy with the new extension contract offered by WFT so he wants to move on from WFT. I don't know if Paulson has the latest info but he knows Scherff so who knows.. |

Re: WFT's Off-Season Thread
The only QB I would have sold the farm for in this draft was Lawrence. He's the biggest sure thing there was. All the rest, meh. Not worth trading up for or wasting a roster spot on a guy that needs serious development.
