Been playing South Park: Stick of Truth for a couple days now, it's a must buy if you are a SP fan like I am. So many references and hilarious shit to see. From what I've heard hours wise it's not that long and the turn-based combat isn't really my thing but other than that it's definitely good. You can tell Stone and Parker put a lot of work into it to make it a good game.

Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)
I recently installed this ENB mod to the laundry list of mods I currently have on GTA 4. It's incredible what hobbyist have been able to do with a 6 year old game. Though I blame these mods for tuning me into a fickle hold out for GTA 5 on PC rather then just getting it on PS3 or 360.

DRave. I don't know anything about ESO, however, I've played a lot of MMO's over the years. Starting with Everquest back in the late 90's, then WOW in college. I get nervous if a game like that does NOT have a monthly fee. In order for a game like that to be succesful it requires constant tuning, content, and significant infrastructure to run smoothly. It depends on the type of player you are. In college, WOW was ~10 a month... probably saved me about 300+ a month because it was cheap entertainment! That said, Guildwars 2 did a great job for a single purchase. As one of the few PC gamers in the thread here are my current games: DOTA 2 - Pretty fun game, and free to play (microtransactions). Their yearly big tournament is coming up. The prize pool for the pro players sitting at about 6 Million bucks. Pretty nice pay day for playing a video game. That said... I've actually really enjoyed watching the professional matches. It's a fairly fun spectator sport. Last year Public in Tenleytown streamed the final match live and the place was packed. Diablo III - If you played it upon release and lost interest... consider picking it up again. There has been an expansion which adds a lot of good content. Even without it, they reworked big things about the game and made it much more enjoyable. Hearthstone - It's a card type game where you get cards, build decks, and take turns with other players. Great game for playing on your laptop while someone else is watching TV you're not really interested in. It's free to play and hopes you'll buy cards/etc to support it, but it's not necessary to be competitive. It's like a less-nerdy Magic the Gathering. Lots of strategy, pretty fun. |
I was over the whole motion gaming thing after a few days with the Wii.
Agreed. Have to hand it to Nintendo though they struck while the iron was hot and and were rewarded handsomely for it. Its kind of funny the reactions you get when people are debating last generation and you tell them that the Wii outsold both the PS3 and 360 by ~20 million units each. Personally I have great respect for the way Nintendo handles a lot of their IPs in that they wait until they think they have a good game rather then making come hell or high water annual releases. With that said Nintendo is one of the most evil companies out there in the first world in terms of throwing around lawsuits for any and everything rivaling even the likes of Apple. Nintendo launch mass lawsuit against R4 | bit-gamer.net Nintendo Sues Modding Business Over Sale of Game-Copying Devices Court dismisses lawsuit against Nintendo after patents invalidated | Polygon Report: Nintendo settles lawsuit alleging ROM chip patent infringement | Polygon Ironically Nintendo has been scared of piracy even dating before the internet went commercial. In fact its dictated the design of every home console since. For starters both the NES and SNES featured controlled chips that could only be supplied by Nintendo. In fact Nintendos micromanagement of 3rd party developers allowed Sega and eventually Sony to emerge as competitors. The biggest blow up was a chip shortage during the NES era which led to the control chips being rationed. Most of you probably remember seeing this somewhere When disc based games were about to become the thing during the 32 bit era Nintendo ultimately decided that CD's were to easy to copy and choose to stick with $70 MSRP cartridge based games. Then during the PS2 era when Nintendo finally decided to make disc based games they choose to design the Gamecube with miniture disc which they believed in theory would help protect them against piracy. (Ironically today the Gamecube/Wii emulator Dolphin is considered among the best in post PS1 console emulation.) Just like Dreamcast, Nintendo fell victim to PS2 being the most affordable DVD player in the market for a decent part of the early 2000's. Part of the reason Nintendo then choose to go with the Wii was they knew while certainly possible, the motion based gaming controls would be a pain to duplicate. Then of course the WiiU with the tablet based controller was also deemed as a speed bump against piracy. So in conclusion kids Nintendo is the Apple of the Video Game industry. Now what did I come in this thread to say. Oh yeah, if you like story based games try out Walking Dead Season 2 (and 1 for that matter) as well as Season 1 of the Wolf Among Us. Personally I still have trouble wrapping my head around it but Telltale seems to have quietly emerged as one of the better developers in the industry today.
It's a smart move by Microsoft. I'm still torn over which system to get, and since I couldn't care less about the Kinect, it's got my attention.
Microsofts Gaming Division right now is kind of at risk for a Dreamcast like exit from this generation. Though for completely different reasons. Investors want Microsoft’s new CEO to kill Xbox, Bing and Surface For starters a group of 'activist investors' which honestly sound more like "why aren't you squeezing every last dime out of your customer base investors" HATE the gaming division of Microsoft as it has been viewed as a money pit. They are now part of the board of directors. Granted PS3 got off to a terrible start last gen and recovered well enough to pull even with the 360 at the end (anyone remember the CEO encouraging people to work harder to afford a PS3) so its certainly not the end of days but unlike Sony, the gaming division has never really been a critical part of Microsoft in terms of business. |

Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)
I'm shocked to hear Dragon Age 2 wasn't well received. If you like the games for strategic game play, it has it in spades. You have to really think your way through many battles, which I didn't think was the case with Dragon Age Origins. Origins didn't demand much from a battlefield analysis perspective. As long as you had two tanks, an archer and a mage you came out on top of almost every battle. With 2, not the case.
I thought 2 was an upgrade. |

Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)
Have had Remember Me for a while now after getting it on sale for Steam earlier this year but only recently gotten around to play it. Can't necessarily speak for the rest of it but in terms of art work and color palette this might be the greatest I've come across in a video game. I even started using some of these pics as Desktop backgrounds.
These are actual in game screens taken off my computer. In other news I bought a Watch Dogs voucher from Ebay last night for $43. The same ones that I'm guessing come with the $250 and up graphic cards as I did the same thing when Assasins Creed 4 came out, mainly in a panic move following the purchase of a second GTX 770 a week before they added AC4 to their bundle (got Arkham Orgins and Splinter Cell Blacklist). The voucher worked great but UPlay, the platform needed to activate it on PC (even with Steam) was shockingly having server issues so it wasn't until just now that I was able to get a download going. To be fair its been downloading close to my max speed at around 2.0 MBps (emphasis on MB not Mb) still I'm tired of EA and Ubisoft either avoiding Steam or adding random conditions to their Steam games. Anyway just figured I'd point out for anyone looking to get a decent discount on Watch Dogs for PC to search for Watch Dogs Nvidia Voucher on Ebay. If you're patient enough to bid you might get it anywhere from the mid $20's to the high $30's but being an impatient man myself I searched for people with reasonable 'Buy it Now' options. Either way kind of beats shelving out $60 on day 1 or waiting for it to go on sale.
PS Dirtbag you completely ruined Leliana, which is sacrilege. Played Watchdogs for about an hour last night. Other than having difficulty remembering the right buttons due to using a PS3 controller wired as a 360 controller on my PC (I keep forgetting which buttons translate lol) it's pretty cool so far. Heard it's been having problems on PC though, which sucks. Also I'm not a big fan of how the cars handle, it's way too cartoony/arcadish for me. Definitely prefer GTA style handling over it. Other than that I like the whole hacking concept, haven't used guns too much yet so we'll see how that turns out.

Re: New Games on the Horizon (the video game thread)
So I got a chance to try out Steams Streaming feature and was pretty impressed.
The TV in the background is my 42 inch Plasma thats hooked up to my desktop computer which is also hooked up to a 27 inch monitor not pictured above so in short the game is being displayed on 3 screens at once. The computer in the foreground is my 17 inch laptop. My desktop has 2 GTX 770's while my laptop has a 650m. For those who don't speak nerd my desktop computer is a high end BMW while my laptop gaming wise is a decent Honda Accord. Another way to describe the laptop is comfortably more powerful then a PS3/360 but a decent bit weaker than a PS4. For the most part I've been getting around 60 fps on my laptop however the audio is choppy so I just play the audio directly from desktop and put my laptop on mute (which kind of defeats the purpose of streaming but sometimes I prefer to play on my laptop since its right next to my bed). To control the game I use a controller hooked up to my laptop. The craziest part though is that my laptop is doing barely any work. Usually when I play games on my laptop installed directly to the hard drive it gets pretty hot. Typically around 80 degrees celsius which is pretty much the safe upper limit for GPU's. When streaming the games I noticed that my laptop was virtually the same temperature as when I'm using it for nothing more than trolling, I mean browsing the internets. Not only that but it was able to use the high end settings that only the desktop was capable of providing. Here is a super scientific picture to illustrate whats happening. The two people carrying the sofa are the two graphic cards in my desktop. The person sitting on top of the couch is my laptop's graphics card. I tried it out last night with Dishonored (pictured above), Mortal Kombat 9, Tomb Raider, Sleeping Dogs, Far Cry 3, and Batman Arkham Orgins. Dishonored and Mortal Kombat did pretty good. Sleeping Dogs was solid until it crashed. Far Cry 3 had trouble getting above 15fps at the title screen, and even though Batman Arkham Orgins was getting 60 fps the picture was very choppy. Still pretty cool stuff for a technology thats in its infancy. |

If you have NBA 2k14 for PC I would highly recommend checking out the Ultimate Base Roster Mod. It has every roster, coach, draft class (for associations), player, court, and uniform dating all the way back to the mid 60's. I think there's even a couple from the 50's. Best part is its free.

I love Mass Effect and Halo (Mass Effect 2 is my clear cut best game ever played). I can appreciate Borderlands but as far as Borderlands is concerned I'm actually more interested in Telltales upcoming game based on the BL universe rather then playing my copy of BL2. However the online only aspect, even for single player has pretty much killed any interest I've had in the project. For the most part I've stop playing online multi-player, a decision that's actually worked very well for me.
"You absolutely are going to be able to play Destiny by yourself and have the same kind of fun shooter-experience that you could have in a single-player campaign, which is a word that we’ve weeded out of our vocabulary," he explained.

Bungie's upcoming Destiny will feature a highly crafted narrative experience, one that you can experience as a traditional "campaign." However, even if you're playing the game single-player, you will need an online connection. "To play Destiny, you need to be connected," Bungie's Pete Parsons succinctly noted.
Statements like these kind of remind me a bit of EA with Dead Space 3 where they said that in spite of making the game less scary, increased focus on action, and throwing in an online co-op mode that the single player experience would be just as satisfying as the previous two games.......they were wrong. Another scary part of the game is that with Destiny a $60 purchase could be nothing more then an expensive paperweight a couple of years down the line if the game doesn't perform up to expectations because after all peoples ability to play the game is dependent on Bungie and Activision keeping their servers running. Also as is common with highly anticipated online games there have been server outages. Just started playing The Last of Us on the PS4. Only a few hours in but I can see what all the hype was about.

Don't know if anyone has heard of it yet, but there is a game right now in Alpha testing phase called BEAMNG - DRIVE. It is a car driving game with no apparanent objectives other than sandbox exploration and finding out how many different ways you can crash the cars. This is the most realistic crashing game i have ever played. The deformation and damage puts GTA and pretty much everything else to Shame:

Lucky bastard. I would love to have my memories of The Last of Us wiped so I could play it for the first time all over again. Though I usually play games like TLOU for the story the gameplay was actually very satisfying. Most games where you sneak around its difficult and its hard to figure out the enemies lines of sight and stealth gameplay a lot of times becomes frustrating but because of a feature as simple as Listen Mode I was able to not feel like I could use stealth while at the same time not feeling like I had to much of an advantage. Also the limited ammo and the multiple strategies needed to take down enemies were a lot of fun for me. In fact TLOU seemed to incorporate a lot of elements that made old school Resident Evil a blast. Also from what I understand the DLC episode Left Behind is included in the Remastered edition. Left Behind fills in a small gap during the main campaign and also gives more backstory on one of the characters. If you want the full story during your first playthrough then I would suggest playing it right when you get to the part of the game that takes place during the Winter (small non-spoiler screen shot to see what part of the game I'm talking about). You can find it here in the Main Menu. And don't worry about saying no to the Facebook feature as you can play the DLC perfectly fine without it. Though you don't have to worry about it spoiling the ending as it only focuses on the start of the winter section of the campaign while alternating with flashbacks. However views on when to play it may differ. Purchased left behind.. When should I play it? - The Last of Us Message Board for PlayStation 3 - GameFAQs
There's no spoiler whatsoever about the ending in the dlc. In fact, playing the dlc before seeing the ending would give it an entirely new meaning. Just make sure that you don't play until after the end of the Fall chapter.

I'm more inclined to agree that it's better to finish the game first. That's what the game itself says is best on the main menu. The only reason I can currently see to go against that is just for people who want everything to be in chronological order no matter what, even if it messes with the pacing of the game that TLoU's creators wanted.

Beat the game first. It's not about spoiling the ending, its about the pacing and the tone. Also it gives some more possible context to the ending.
|

Just finished up The Last of Us, loved it. I waited to finish up the main story before checking out Left Behind.
