Makes perfect sense to bring in Grossman as Cousins back up till RG III is healthy. Plus we need arms for camp and preseason.
The roster issue is that we currently have just one guy on the entire roster who can play left tackle. Hurt is probably the backup there. One left tackle to five right tackles isn't a great ratio.
It is March 18th. Once the draft is over, we sign a few undrafted FA's, play a few preseason games we will see where we really are.
I would not be terribly shocked if along the way we pick up another OT or two and Pashos & Trueblood get cut by the start of season. They are rolling the dice with these two, I do not think they are expecting too much out of either. I m not worried about OT, I would be fine with Compton and Polubus at RT for one more year.
CB and Safety positions on the other hand is in serious need of some more talent. Draft will be leaning heavy with Db's if there are good ones there when we pick. But ShanAllen has shown in the past (2011 not drafting Locker) they will not get impatient and reach for need. They rather go with BPA. Smart.

Though our cap situation and lack of FA movement sucks now, I have to think that we can pick up one or two of the surprise training camp cuts this summer on the cheap.

Is there a cap penalty for releasing players? People talk casually about signing players, then cutting them during the summer or preseason, but I thought there was some kind of penalty.

It can be a surprise despite the lack of FAs in the Redskins camp. But we are just early in the season!

I know we have discussed this possibility every year but it is something we really never do. Unless forced due to injury but even then it is 99% of the time done with our cuts.

That is only the case when a portion of the contract is guaranteed or paid out in a signing bonus which is usually not the case especially with the players we are talking about here ( in particular Pashos or Trueblood ) there would be no penalty.

http://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2011/12/15/signature-stats-snapshot-offensive-tackle-pass-blocking-efficiency/

From 2011, and this particular one was done after week 14 of that year, so not the entire season. This is rankings by PFF for a stat that they call PBE (Pass Blocking Efficiency). Pashos rates out as the 6th best tackle at pass blocking when this was done. This is obviously prior to his injury, so that is still a question mark as to whether he can regain his form. Would also like to see what he rates out as in the run. Its possible he is a reverse Polumbus, good at pass blocking but suffers in run blocking.

Drop to the worst, Look at 52 and the ones tied at 54.

Anybody a member there at PFF? Would be interested in seeing end of the year results from 2011 across the board for Tackles to see where Pashos rated out as.

Edit: This would have been after the injury but prior to him having surgery to correct the injury. So he was rating out as the 6th best pass blocker while dealing with a torn ligament in his foot.

Actually his injury occurred in the last preseason game of 2011. So your stat, in context, ranks Pashos as the sixth best pass blocking tackle, having played for 14 weeks (12 starts) with a ruptured tendon in his foot. That's a badass tackle.

If he returns to form (that's if), we have a good RT already on the roster.

Polumbus didnt play that bad last year. There are worse things that could happen than Tyler Polumbus.

Who knows, he could improve as well, just like anyone else could. Maybe he is all pro next year, with the Super Awesome Pashos breathing down his neck, making him move over to the left side while we slide the lesser of our tackles Trent over to the right!!!!!!!!

If those stats are correct, then Polumbus indeed, didn't play bad last year. 5 sacks given up, isn't really that bad. I think that number may have been a bit more had we not had such a mobile QB.

Or you can look at it as having a mobile QB, he gave up 5 sacks when defenders aren't always rushing the passer and/or going to the QB at full speed, should he hand the ball off or run it himself. Mobile QBs tend to make their OL look better than what it is because they run out of a lot of would be sacks.

Picture polumbus without RG3 and then what do you have?

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013

Exactly. We could do worse than Polumbus, but at the same time when we were in obvious passing situations and couldn't hide behind the read option, our O-line could not pass protect. I'm hoping Polumbus gets better, but would suspect a different RT is going to be better.

Compton, Pashos - I hope someone steps up to protect RG3 this year.
If we bring back Hall we are not improving as a secondary. In fact its more likely we are taking a step back at the CB position.
We're improving the secondary compared to this instant, yes?

Our corners aren't the real weakness of the secondary anyway. They're average cover corners who play our unique style of defense (similar to Steelers with pressure out of the secondary more than most) quite well. The FS play was bad, and Haslett's set up/positioning didn't help any, especially early in the season.

Bottom line I think is that a starting caliber FS will help the secondary far more than an upgrade at corner, especially factoring in the question of how well any of the FA corners fit our scheme.

Well, for one, he played a season with a token tendon in his ankle because his team needed him. And played pretty well. So he's a tough SoB, at the very least, although playing was probably not the best thing for his career.

By all accounts he's also a good guy, and that may be worth something as well when you have a team of youg guys.

So let's focus on his agent and his use of painkillers to play... Nice going Goat, for a few days I thought you had seen the light, if even just a little bit. But things are back to normal.

We can do both, releasing Hall was the first step. I know we can find multiple secondary starters in the draft, just dont f*ck it up.
Really? That's all that you got from that article?

I gotta agree Lotus. I am 35 and I have just in the past two months been diagnosed with Chronic Plantar Facitius (I have been dealing with the problem since DEC '11). It is extrememly painful and I have been taking pain killers to get through the day until I have the down time to have surgery. I am a race car mechanic and also a crew chief on an endurance racing team. Long hours lifting heavy stuff on concrete all day and crouching in unusual positions while working on the car, running around trying to get things fixed in the middle of a race, and loading 20,000lbs of cars and equipment every other week is what has caused my problem. It is unusual for people with an average work day to develope problems like this. It is painful and problematic to say the least. It also can lead to stressing out other areas of the foot and the achilles. I am surprised honestly that he didnt rupture his achilles in the process of playing as I have developed some stiffness in the area when crouched (almost like a lineman) doing body work for hours on end.

That guy is tough as nails, and honestly he may be an answer at RT for a couple of years, obviously not much longer. Glad to have Pashos on the team and if he for some reason gets reinjured again well then so be it. He is cheap and looking to prove him self again. I like this pickup.

This I completely agree with you on. We need a FS who can cover and play the field. If we can find a good one of those then we would be good to go with our starters from last year.

Not hating on the guy, just employing stealy football mentality. He's suffered a nasty injury and who knows what level he can play at going forward. Given the "epic" effort he displayed for the Browns, why did they let him get away?
