And yet the great offensive scheme failed this season. I'd agree to wait and see what happens next season. I think with anything less than an elite QB, and no upgrades at WR or our run game, it's going to be really ugly next season.
And if it was cheating, you know the league would have been all over us. And I am more and more amazed how easily Redskin fans switch from rooting for to trashing the first franchise QB we have had in awhile. It's not his fault our idiot ownership couldn't get a good deal done.
Franchise QB? Really? Did you watch the last game of the season?Drew, Tom , Ben, are franchise QB’s . Kirk, average QB |
Season completions is a nothing stat. Jason Campbell had that stat before Kirk got it by throwing to his running back 7 out of 10 times. Yardage is a product of a great offensive scheme and being in that scheme for years.
Kirk cheated the offseason rules by training at Jon Gruden's camp. Similar offense concepts, that was smart, it made him better. That won't be available to him anymore. Kirk is a good between the 20's QB. Redzone he is marginal at best. Trust me... Josh Allen, Rosen, Darnold, Baker Mayfield will be just as good and in time better than Kirk under Gruden and co.
Same as Brees IMO, great QB but that system is what makes him lethal. |

Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
Like Schneed was saying, a defense can be built even with signing Cousins, it isn't like we have no talent on defense, looking at each level individually:
Defensive line: Jonathan Allen- Showed how well he can collapse the pocket, he only had 1.5 sacks but he made everyone else better and we saw how bad the defense got when he got hurt. Matt Ionnadis- See Jonathan Allen, before his hand injury, he and Allen we reminding me of Malik Jackson/Derek Wolfe in Denver a few years ago, love that tandem going forward. Anthony Lanier- He has size and you can't coach that, and we saw him bat ball after ball down, showed he had some nice pass rushing moves, I believe he had 5.5 sacks this season in limited play. Linebackers: Zach Brown- NEEDS to be resigned, was arguably our best player this year, basically got him on a steal, watched him make play after play that we havent seen from a LB since London Fletcher first came over ironically from Buffalo. Ryan Kerrigan- Everyone seems back and forth on him, saying he never makes the big play against the big teams in the key moments but 13 sacks is 13 sacks anyway you slice it, he will never be JJ Watt dominant, but he can be a key part in a good defense. Preston Smith- There are times I love him and there are times I wonder what he is doing back there, he did have 8 sacks and a couple ints this year, I like him and what he can bring, and when Jonathan Allen went down is when I saw his production dip but he did pick it up towards the end of the year. Secondary- Kendall Fuller- He was finally healthy this year and it showed, 4 interceptions and was the 7th rated CB according to PFF I believe, he is a top level slot CB and could cover outside if asked but I think he is at his best in the slot, expect him to continue to develop out these next year. D.J. Swearinger- Made some awesome plays this season (Vikings and Raiders) and got burnt a couple of times (Eagles), but he was solid for the majority of the season and was a leader. Notable names: Montae Nicholson (looked good before injury) Josh Norman (We know what we are getting) So the talent is there, we could add some more but I still dont like our coordinator |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
Yeah Mason Foster is a fine player, but if he's a starter then you have a hole on your defense that the best offenses can exploit. He's not fast enough so a good coordinator can figure out how to get a guy isolated on him and exploit the matchup.
A good MLB corps will include Zach Brown, but he needs a much better running mate next to him. Foster can play for me as a 3rd MLB. At safety, DJ is OK and Nicholson looks promising but I wouldn't stand pat there either. Everett belongs at the very bottom of the depth chart. A good safety tandem needs to have somebody extremely rangy back there. Nicholson could be it, but we just don't know if he can stay healthy. So I'd look to get a top notch athlete back there somehow and tell all of them to sort it out by competing for jobs in camp. Ideally, that new guy will be so good that he'd go to the top of the chart, and you'd have Swearinger and Nicholson fighting for the 2nd job. Corners, I'm actually fairly excited about Fuller and Moreau. Happy with Norman too. Dunbar's a good 4th. But you can't have too many corners so draft another. And then where it matters most, the defensive front / rush. I think Allen can start on a top notch defensive line, and Kerrigan can on the edge. Otherwise, not good enough all around. I'll take Ioannidis as a rotation guy in the nickel, and Lanier for depth. But Stacy McGee, Ziggy Hood and Terrell McClain should be rotation guys at most. We need a stud to play next to Allen. A stud DT who can both disrupt the run and the passer. And Preston Smith, Trent Murphy, Junior Galette and Ryan Anderson should be rotation guys on a decent team. I want a speed rusher on the other side of Kerrigan. This is what the best defenses look like, solid at every spot, and average players end up in rotation/depth roles. I'd definitely try to put the 1st rounder towards the defensive front or the defensive edge rush, provided it's not a reach when we pick. |

The guy is 30 and in his PRIME, we would be foolish to let a top 10 CB get away. Fuller is a beast, Breeland is prob gone but Dunbar has proved he can step up.. Our weakest pos is pass rush, RK (who I've hated on some) is really all we got. Need to address that asap |

Those teams also have very good interior push so that the QB can't just escape the edge rushers with a little step forward in the pocket. The only time this year Preston Smith looked valuable was when Allen was healthy and pushing the pocket. The Saints have Cam Jordan but Sheldon Rankins was helping him out quite a bit. The Vikes have Everson Griffen but Linval Joseph was a difference maker. The Jags acquired Marcel Dareus in the interior and now look even better on defense. I think Allen is one of those very disruptive forces for us. I'd like another, with Ioannidis and Lanier in contributing roles. Edge rusher is huge but I think one more stud interior lineman would have the biggest impact on the entire defense, making the jobs easier for the edge rushers and the MLBs. |

I am with you on Fuller and Moreau, love them |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
A disruptive NT/DT is crucial for this defense. AJ Francis, Ziggy Hood, Stacy McGee and injuried Phil Taylor was the weakest link when playing over Center.
Ryan Anderson is the guy on the defense I’m most interested in going into next year...where does he fit? IF Sua Cravens comes in dedicated to the team...big if...I like out safety group. Sign Zach Brown...which I don’t think will be hard. |
Franchise QB? Really? Did you watch the last game of the season?Drew, Tom , Ben, are franchise QB’s . Kirk, average QB
Yes I watched the last game of the season. He didn't look like a franchise QB then. Partly because he had a bad game, partly because our WR corps is young and not good, partly because the team as a whole played bad. Did you watch the Redskins games this season? Because Kirk did look like a franchise QB then. Despite our WR corps and team as a whole not being good. Did you watch the two seasons before last season, when he set franchise records each year? Because Kirk also looked like a franchise QB then. Our team still wasn't that good, but our WR corps was. People saying that due to the increasing pass-happiness of the NFL, stats are meaningless. Then what happened last season compared to the past two? Answer is that even a franchise QB can only do so much, when Allen and Snyder have run down this team so much. Kirk is still a franchise QB. Phillip Rivers is a franchise QB, Same as Stafford, Ryan, Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, Eli Manning. They aren't as good as Tom, Ben, and Drew. But you don't trade them until they are well past their prime, you build your team around them. You can debate where Kirk falls in that group, but he is in that group. |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
Eagles and Pats got there with top notch QBs AND strong defense.
Both have cheap QBs. (or extreme value for what they are being paid) Let's be real. A huge reason the Patriots can do what they do is because they have one of the top QBs in NFL history that takes much less than what he could get so that the team benefits. He values winning more than he does getting max dollars. It's a unique situation and one we'll probably never ever see again while we are alive. Not many men marry models worth 300+ million while they themselves are worth 180+ million. Look at Brady's cap hit the past years: 2013- $13,800,000 2014- $14,800,000 2015- $14,000,000 2016 - $13,764,706 2017 - $14,000,000 This allows you to continue to have a competitive team year in and year out. You won't find another QB to give up the kind of money he's given up to keep his team competitive. That's one thing I admire Brady for. He's left a lot on the table in order to win. Then again, it does help when you and your wife have a net worth of 500 million dollars. On a side note, it's amazing how very little the Patriots spend on the OL. |

I don't know if anyone will give up a 1st for Kirk, with all the young QB's in this draft it will be hard to imagine that. MAYBE Denver but that is a Big Q too with their money situation. |

I don't get why the transition tag option gets disregarded so quickly, here and in the media. If the FO can ask (or at least get a feel of) if Kirk would sign offers from other teams in that situation, then it's a good option: -either he signs a crazy offer that you don't want to match and you can finally move on and say "We should've signed you 2 years ago, but you played it right, good luck to you we're not paying that kind of money" -or he signs an offer that you're willing to match and you know you got him at market value. You only need to know that he's not gonna make it backfire by not signing any offers and just taking the 28 M. But I think he made it pretty clear he wants to get settled. So I'm guessing the FO could get that information from his agent. |

Makes more sense now, and yes the JETS are the team I worry about the most actually.. They have a ton of room and have said they are interested before. In fact weren't they rumored to be a trade partner for Kirk a couple years ago? |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
I think it comes down to this, if the Skins are serious about keeping him, they need to come strong with an offer that screams we want you back. Otherwise let him hit the market to gauge his true value and hope he’s interested in letting the Skins counter.

Which is what I think will happen, he'll hit the market and go where he wants to go. Might be DC, I doubt it but we will see soon enough thankfully. |

Mmmmh. It was my understanding the only things to match were the average/year and the guaranteed money. Must have misunderstood, can't find anything online really detailed about what you'd have to match. |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
if Cousins is not worth a 1st round pick then why in the world would you make him the highest paid Qb ? I would surely think that if we franchised him at least one team would give a 1st round pick for him..why can't the skins sign him for what he wants then turn around and trade him? and if his salary is to much then we overpaid big time. how the hell is this team ever gonna break through when we keep taking steps back? we are getting weaker every year. Is there any scenario where the skins can get compensated with a high draft pick?

Yeah hoping a team gives us a 1 for him, Jets have a high pick but they won't let that go IMO, Browns have 2 top 4 picks... They may but doubtful. Denver? That is the only legit trade partner imo. |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
I think I'm agreeing that the team will offer Cousins an aggressive offer and if Cousins turns it down, he'll be cut loose to test free agency. We'll see if he chooses to let the 'skins match or not. It's either Denver or NY Jets.

Everything. This was done away with at the last CBA However you do have to match salary structure, bonuses and incentives. On top of this, if we match an offer- lets be real, Cousins doesn't have to sign our offer over the other teams. He can choose Denver or whoever. I think people forget he has to WANT to stay in DC over another team. so lets all be real and just come to reality that unless we tag him for 34 mil, hes gone unless Allen and Snyder overpay him grossly. |
Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
Denver can only get him through trade. The Browns have two picks in the first and have wasted multiple picks on quarterbacks only to have it not work out, so have the Jets. Arizona pick location makes it difficult to get a blue chip top tier QB, they have also historically preferred veteran quarterbacks. There is an absolutely a market for a trade.
If I am Denver, I would trade that pick for Kirk and not blink an eye. They have everything else in place to be a Superbowl caliber team. Redskins absolutely must pursue a trade. Kirk Cousin has no intention of returning to DC. |

Re: Cousins Saga 4.0. Is he done in DC?
Denver is a mess. They've lost good players through free agency, their o-line sucks, wr's are getting older, the HC is on real shaky ground and was almost fired. Miller is basically getting QB money, terrible contract. They're a 5 win team. Cousins may get them a few more wins but their SB contending days are over.
