I know Kiper really likes him and at the least he's an accurate QB (at least this past year) with good mobility. Not the best arm though. [YT]NiUKYaHGlzE[/YT] |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Some thoughts from being at the draft tonight:
-Overall the fans are much more subdued than you'd expect -If you hang out in the lobby, you have no idea what's going on. You don't hear anything that's happening inside -Signal was horrible. My texts to Matty were arriving sometimes 20-30 minutes after I'd send them. So, so much for being the "embedded warpath reporter" on the ground -To see players' moms and grandmothers (and other families) get excited was really cool -I totally called Ponder to the Vikings in one of my mocks -After the Niners passed on Quinn, the plan to move down was to get Quinn at 16, we didn't expect him to go to the Rams. We also didn't think Ponder would go to the Vikings -Kerrigan is a solid pick, but man if he effs up he'll have to deal with chants of "Nannnncy...Nannnnncyyyy" -No, I'm not Scott Van Pelt -I never predicted Vince Young to the Redskins, I merely reported that we're seriously considering him...I predicted Alex Smith (which may be just as foolish) -Names I heard most frequently mentioned for tomorrow (in no particular order): Stephen Paea, Stephen Wisniewski, Leonard Hankerson, Ricky Stanzi...which means we're taking Andy Dalton and Rodney Hudson |

Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Wow, only took me 1.5 hours to read this thread from beginning to end lol... Glad we traded down, am happy with Kerrigan and would love to see us add someone like Hudson, Hankerson or Jurrell Casey at some point. I think Casey would be a good fit at end.

Dalton and Bowers?
IONO mannn, I'm not trying to draft another player with a bad knee. Im still pissed we drafted Malcolm Kelly as high as we did knowing his knee was that bad. Bowers is a beast, but there's a reason teams have not selected him. MAYBE I'd draft him LATE if he's still available. Also, I hope REALLY hope we can land a higher tier center and guard. |

Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Um, I'd guess if we stay at 41 it's pretty high. But who knows for sure
Date night with the wife tomorrow so after around 6:30ish I won't be paying much attention to the draft. I'll get alerts from people on the scene and may watch a little bit on my phone, but for the most part I'll be out of commission tomorrow night |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Well I got to say that Kerrigans a good pick in the Clay Matthews mould. I think it'll be interesting to see how he does in the 3-4. We clearly didn't want Quinn or Gabbert, and this guy is a good safe prospect. I like this pick, now we just need OL WR and DL and our draft's looking good.
|
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Apparently Mike wasn't as high on Blaine as any of us thought. And we did want Quinn, took a gamble and it didn't pan out as expected.
The time between picks really stands out when you're there. Goodell looked bored out of his mind |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Roddy White's initial reaction to the Falcons picking Jones on Twitter:
“Well we got Julio Jones. I’m excited." Roddy White after seeing what the Falcons gave up: “Well, I was wrong. We give up our draft.’’ |

The time between picks really stands out when you're there. Goodell looked bored out of his mind
I don't know though, I feel like the Skins brass were like "Lets trade down, if Quinn's there, then we take him if not then we're just as happy with Kerrigan." I noticed though that Quinn isn't that good of a tackler (something RK is) and that he isn't that fluid in his hips to drop into coverage (supposedly he looked worse than RK did when he dropped into coverage at his pro day) plus Kerrigan didn't have the character or health issues that Quinn did, the more and more I look at this pick, the more I like it and the more I'm happy we didn't get Quinn. Now as for day 2, I really really hope we do NOT draft Kaepernick. Any potential of us drafting Bowers? Titus Young? Trading up for Mallett? |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Well I mean Quinn was their preference but it wasn't like they were like "Oh crap, Quinn's gone now what do we do"
It was "Let's trade down and get an extra pick because odds are Quinn will be there at 16 with Cleveland and San Fran passing on him. And if he's not there Kerrigan should be there and we're going to have an extra 2nd to work with" |

Now as for day 2, I really really hope we do NOT draft Kaepernick. Any potential of us drafting Bowers? Titus Young? Trading up for Mallett?
Well to be fair pretty much everyone thats evaluated the draft has said that the suspension from the NCAA is not an accurate reflection on Robert Quinn's character. In fact Quinn is actually regarded as a high character player by most scouts and personnel. On top of that the brain tumor is benign. The real argument for Kerrigan over Quinn is production. In 2009 when Quinn last played, Quinn posted 11 sacks. Kerrigan posted 12. Also in 2008 when both were sophomores Kerrigan got 7 sacks to go with his 56 tackles. Quinn on the other hand got only 2 sacks to go with 34 tackles. In the year Quinn was unfairly suspended Kerrigan posted 13 sacks. So at the very least in terms of raw numbers, and not knowing situations, surrounding personel, matchups, opponents, etc Kerrigan had the better numbers. Knowing what I know now though we couldn't really have gone wrong with either. Still both teams picking at 14 and 16 now have great bookends/OLB's. St. Louis with Long and Quinn, and us with Orakpo and Kerrigan. |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
So just found out Paea is a Nose Tackle in a 3-4. Unless Dalton is there I want Paea at 41.
|
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Another fun moment from tonight, well I'm not sure I'd call it "fun" per se, getting practically run over by Mike Pouncey's buddies as they find out he's talking to the Dolphins "Mike's on the phone! Mike's on the phone! He's on the phone! He's on the phone! He's on the phone! Let's go! Let's go! Let's go! He's on the phone!"...bullrush backstage

Yes to Wisniewski - he would be a great fit. I really like Hankerson, who I think may turn out to be better than Julio Jones, but I would prefer that the Skins take linemen in Round 2. I don't know enough about Paea to have an opinion. No to Stanzi in the second round. I don't think he's an NFL QB. |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Man SS it's looking like your Vince Young prediction may come true

Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Dalton or Mallet @ 41, trade down or get Hankerson or Greg Little at WR

Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
SMOOT - On NFLN they showed a shot of one lone Skins fan in the seats, wearing a burgundy Portis jersey.
My life laughed and said "Look, we only have one fan there!" WAS THAT YOU? :D ---------------- My thoughts: Titans taking Locker that early...stupid but I was excited that they saved us from being stupid. Then, I was nervous we'd take Gabbert, not a fan. THANK YOU JAGS! GREAT TRADE FOR US! 2 second-rounders will be very beneficial. Kerrigan was a solid pick for us. We should be able to play OLB fine. I watched his highlight vid and checked his sack/forced fumble stats...IMPRESSIVE. I'm excited to see him and 'Rak attacking QBs from both sides. We're going to be a D with a ton of sacks and TOs. NOW...Get DALTON with one of the picks, preferably #41. Then go for the best available O-Lineman, Hankerson (WR-Miami) or a CB, maybe the kid from Miami. I thiik we have a great shot at Kris Jenkins in FA to address the middle of our D-line, so use the draft for more pressing needs. |

They were a bit more scattered than most other fans. I think actually other than the Jets and Giants, the strongest contingent there was Lions fans

SS, kudos to you. When you said that Locker might go in the top ten I thought that you were spending too much time partying with Mallett. You are the master.

I saw one dude with a mainly burgundy long shelve shirt with yellow highlights and Redskins across the front. One of the few times in my life I was like god we have awful colors.

What? We have one of the best color schemes in the league. No black just for the sake of having black...no navy blue (seems like most teams are going with some shade of blue lately, in all sports). |
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
When done wrong though, our colors can be kinda ugly. But I blame that on whoever designs some of these shirts and hats.
|
Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
Even the best of color schemes can look horrible with a bad design. Seriously...how can you mess up blue, white and red, or black and gold?

Exactly! It was basically this shirt but had lettering not logo, which is not awful but stand it alone in crowd of different teams jersey's and shirts and it is awful. Buster you are so passionate about NFL clothing it makes me wonder at times.

Re: 2011 Draft Thread Round 1
What would we do with Bowers if we took him? At approximately 275lbs, her really doesn't fit for us as he's too light to play end and we already will have two rush backers. With his knee issues, I can't see how Bowers would be able to add the bulk to play 3-4 end for us. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Paea (sp?) would be my choice and then maybe Jurrell Casey. That would really help if we can trade down again and still acquire Casey. I'm still not liking any qb we could get at this point. I have no interest in Dalton, but if the team takes him, I reckon I could trust that they see more in him than they did in Gabbert and Ponder etc... So far, the Skins seem to be doing the right things and that gives me hope... for now lol |
