What about Montre Holland the OG from Dallas we're trying to score? Y'all trying to tell me he's not better than Will Montgomery? He wouldn't give Dock a run for the money?

Re: Mega-Merge: 2010 Free Agency Rumors and Reports Thread

i think hicks was a great signing for his versatility alone. he may not even start if Rinehart continues to impresses Shanahan. If both of them play equally well, the edge goes to rinehart, as it would minimize the line shufling required if another player goes down. I like the idea of hicks being our #1 backup at all the guard and tackle positions. IMO his best shot to start is RT unless we fill that need elsewhere in the offseason. We don't have a starting caliber LT on the team at this point. Clifton was the only "quality" one out there and i'm using that term loosely. If the position isnt somehow addressed before (or during) the draft, i'm very scared for whoever is our QB in 2010.

if you knew the 49ers backup o lineman who started what, 4 games last year, then kudos to you. but i doubt that im handing out kudos for a tony pashos.
I do imagine that our OL coach (who was SF's last year I believe) knows him, so I hope if he had wanted him we would have pushed harder for him.

Still, lots of holes to be filled either from inside or FA/Draft.

credskins, thats my point. the skins FO actually knows these players and arent signing them. as a fan, im not going to get mad and act like i know more than them b/c i got espn insider or read profootballtalk.

A) I am Stephon Heyer
B) I am Stephon Heyer's agent
c) I am a close relative of Stephon Heyer
D) I plan on betting against the Redskins in 2010 and ensuring Stephon Heyer starts at RT is the best way to ensure the Redskins lose as many games as possible

Just a word of caution on Holland that you should be aware of.

1. He is the ONLY Unrestricted Free Agent Dallas has and they dont want to resign him.

2. He was acquired in a trade with Denver in 2008 for a 5th round pick. Denver was glad to be rid of him as he had a bevy of fines from the team for consistently showing up to camp overweight and out of shape.

3. Since arriving in Dallas he has not had any real measurable playing time, he is WAAAAY down the depth chart behind guys like Free, Proctor and McQuistan. Free and Proctor are very good, but if anyone is BELOW McQuistan on the depth chart, that person should consider a career change.

Just wanted you guys to be aware of what we as fans have had to endure since acquiring Holland.

from the sounds of it, we did want him - we just didnt want to spend more on him. as someone else mentioned, its a very odd time for this team to suddenly start being frugal. in an capped year, the skins would be doing exactly what the should be. however, with no cap, there's no reason to not get the guy you want because he wants 1-2MM more than you initially wanted to pay.

youforgot one more option:

E) i dont pretend to know more than I do.

honestly. pashos could very well = a stephen heyer.

holland could very well = a mike williams

dont pick names out of a hat and act like "ohh we should have done this or we should have done that".

im just having trouble understanding fans who are mad we arent signing these no name guys . . . .when we the fans know nothing other than their name and postion.

sandtrapps post highlights that. ohh an o lineman is available? lets sign him and we are 1/5th done with assembling our o line!!!

DOH!!

Have you every met Stephon Heyer or Will Montgomery? If the guy is trash I'm sure Shanny will show him the door. If he can beat either one of those two guys, that's a step up. Thanks for getting back. My homeboy was talking about him this morning. From the schimmy I get, he was on the bench last year but did good the year before that.

It also shows people do not desire to make optimal decisions when given huge load of income.

Yeah, that was the year that Dallas was 21st in rushing and missed the playoffs. So if that is what is defined as "good", well, okay.

I wouldn't mind this move at all. Even at his age. It seems interior lineman, particularly centers, tend to play longer late into their careers.

I would definitely do it. Either Tryon or Barnes would play opposite D.Hall, we dump Rogers, who doesn't want to be here, and we bring in an instant home rome threat in Sproles.

Argh. I wouldn't be too pleased. Tryon and Barnes don't make me feel warm and fuzzy competing for that spot. Rogers might be a knucklehead, but he's a pretty good corner even though he can't catch. RB is the last thing we need to be TRADING for. Now if Sproles was free, I'd be all over it, but not at the cost you mention above.
Hard to believe some are upset over losing out on marginal guys like Clifton and Pashos, who in normal years would have barely registered a blip on most teams' free agent radar. I can see people getting upset over losing out on someone like Dansby, but then again if we're turning over a new leaf you have to at least give the new direction a chance. "Winning" the offseason hasn't gotten us anything in the past.
Yep; I mean I want to improve this year over last, but if it means we'll be addressing these positions with better guys next year while giving some guy a shot to start this year, that's better. I'd rather have say, another tackle next year than to have some allegiance to some guy that we brought in on a solid contract and didn't plan on keeping anymore than the year. Imagine we got Pashos and he played decently for us, then you have the dilemma of whether to keep him another year or go ahead and get the stud next year. I suppose you could always cut him after the year or force him into a backup role, but then what was the point in signing him in the first place?

I hope so and I would love a one year rental. It is sad to say but he would be head and shoulders above anyone on our line and he has intangibles that are hard to quantify.

Keep in mind we could always trade down a few spots in the first round, still drafting in the first round mind you, and pick up another team's second round pick.

So now we have a mid to late round first rounder, a second rounder via another team, and a third (from the Chargers). In that scenario, we've essentially traded 'Los for Sproles straight up. Not quite, but you get the point.

I don't like it at all. It smells like Champ Portis with less talented players.

They would be getting a full time starter at a premium position and a much better pick.

We are getting a very explosive (and fairly expensive) role player at an interchangable position.

Pass if you ask me.

i wouldnt trade carlos for sproles straight up so i certainly wouldnt throw in our very high 2nd round pick for a late 3rd.

that 2nd round pick has huge value in my opinion for a team needing O line help. I really think at that spot we can add a potential 10 year starter on the O line.

im just not sold on sproles as anything more than a luxury player.

Probably could draft a better, every down back with our 2nd round pick...think there going to be some pretty good RBs to fall to the second round.

For the record, I wouldn't do the trade either. I'd rather add a 2nd than give up one. And for those concerned it's one of many, many rumors that float out there every day that have little to no legs (which is why I don't mention them) but I thought this one was interesting enough

I agree. I am confident that we can get a day one starter with the 4th pick in the 2nd round. Late pick in the 3rd? I am not nearly as confident.

After some consideration, I think I would pass on the Rogers/2nd for Sproles/3rd trade. Rogers is a mediocre db and Sproles would fit nicely here, but I can't get past giving up that early second round pick.
