My mind went there as well…immediately. I really don’t think this is a big deal But I will punch people in the face when I hear comments like “long overdue” or “as it should have always been” I won’t stand for that from supposed redskins fans…if you were ever offended by it then how did you become a fan in the first place? Gtfo, we don’t want you or need you. Go root for the Cowboys you sensitive bitch |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
I'm as big of a fan as anyone but I'm not dressing up like an indian chief and going to a game...
|
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
i like Redtails.
redwolves not so much For the record a Red Wolf is kind of a pussy wolf; its between a gray wolf and a coyote. I like Washington Senators; it be cool to bring that back to DC. |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
I haven't seen one that just sticks out... I hope its something cool and unique but Redwolves is just corny as hell

The latter wrote a column and started it by saying he had been to dozens of Redskins games, often as a guest in the owner's box. He cheered and whooped it up with the best of them. But now he realized how incredibly cruel the name is! Seems to me if it was ever that egregious, he would not have been a fan at in the first place. |

And fools like these took it away from them. They say they listened to the NA community - nothing could be farther from the truth (91% ignored). |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
It’s because evidently Anyone who ever loved the redskins (millions of fans worldwide of every Race , creed etc) really did not know we were all Racist at heart … 🙄… it took a very small group of Woke individuals to wake the rest of us up … hmmmm ..that is what they would like us to believe .. I ain’t buying ! Truth is it’s a movement that for now they are winning and as we saw with Cleveland other teams will cave .. what Nobody has yet to tell me is this … Is using the word Indian wrong ?? Yes or no is the word Indian a slur? Maybe the dictionary needs to be updated and a lot of words need to be banned … let’s just ban and tear down and sweep under the rug anything that somebody else could deem offensive.. it’s over and I’m cool with new name whatever but if you think this really changed anything ..there is a long list of teams now who need to change their name, look , image … even names of cities, towns counties need to be looked at .. even people’s names need to be looked at .. and to think that just about everyone that is a member of this forum for years held the redskins close to heart and finally woke up 😳.. is the word Indian a slur ?

I’ll try to find the article….but UW Madison took a huge black rock off campus because someone complained because they heard a rumor that 175 years ago a few people called it n*** rock and they were offended. So rocks are racist too and cause people emotional harm. 🤦*♂️ |

That’s how we were created. And yes I have had this happen. Every Native American I’ve met is a fan of the team because of the old name and logo. |

Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
When I look at the research on Native American imagery on the impact on Native American youth it is eye opening. That being said most of the problems were at the high school level and college level where a student would come out dressed up in a costume caricaturizing tribal culture and scalping the opponent at a pep rally or using the logo of the university on a t shirt depicting the mascot getting drunk for a frat party.

So? People do something like that to all kinds of other groups. It’s not evil. Hell I’m a well off smart guy who is white and Republican and was in the Army. I get called all sorts of stuff and people make all kinds of stereotypes about me and the world goes on. To get this number, the Post’s polling team questioned 504 self-identified Native Americans from all 50 states. Given that I have 50 first cousins who are enrolled in the Navajo and Yankton Dakota Sioux Nations, none of whom likes the team name, I found the results to be curious. When I looked more closely at the methodology of the poll, I was appalled. First and foremost, the Post states clearly that they did not verify the actual Native American identity or tribal enrollment of its respondents. Unlike most “minorities,” non-Native Americans have often declared themselves Native American with little or no factual evidence or cultural connection whatsoever. Furthermore, 56 percent of those asked said they were not part of any tribal nation or could not name what tribe their ancestors claimed. Imagine asking 500 white Americans for an opinion about Europe and not caring that more than half had no connection to their ancestors’ place of origin. https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/on-the-shameful-and-skewed-redskins-poll/ In 2016, the Washington Post published a poll about whether Native Americans found the Washington Redskins’ name offensive. Ninety percent of respondents said they were not offended by the team’s name. The poll has since been used by Dan Snyder and other team owners as evidence that their Native American mascots are inoffensive. But a new study from academics at the University of Michigan and UC Berkeley contradicts that data. In a scientific survey of more than 1,000 Native Americans, roughly half of the participants said they were offended by the Redskins’ name. Moreover, 65 percent said they were offended by sports fans performing a “tomahawk chop,” and 73 percent said they were offended by fans imitating Native American dances. https://www.washingtonian.com/2020/02/21/a-new-study-contradicts-a-washington-post-poll-about-how-native-americans-view-the-redskins-name/ When you look into the Wash Po survey .. theres holes and its paper thin. I posted a bunch of citations like 40 pages back on the problems of people "self identifying" as NA for various reasons. When half the 504 people the Wash Po surveyed couldnt even lie or think of a single tribe to claim ancestry to .... its like everyone claiming some irish lineage on St Patricks Day. |

Many tribes consider you a Native if you have any Native blood in your ancestry. You think a person is Native only if they are 100% but that is not the case. |

Thinking your "white oppression" is comparable to people who actually have been oppressed the past 50 years .... white people thinking theyve experienced oppression in america? lol i cant .. i cant |
Re: Come up with a new name for the Redskins
Not very empathetic are you? That is fine but I think there is a slight difference between a white male and Native American youth.
You are right not every action is evil. There was a word association study with Native Americans and the Redskins logo and the word that was most used was pride. I think there is a difference between a logo depicting pride and one showing a troupe of a Native American getting drunk. |

I think a good portion of fans will be ready to move forward with a new name especially if it's well received. Some people are just cavemen and can't accept change no matter what. |

Some people are just cavemen and can't accept change no matter what.
I respectfully submit that you are being unfairly dismissive. If all a fan has ever known is the Snyder era, it does not make much of a difference. A rose by any other name is just as sweet and a shoddily run franchise with a new name is just as shoddy. If you are older (me for example), this requires jettisoning a great deal of history that was seen first hand. I have seen the Skins in 5 Super Bowls and numerous playoff appearances. The franchise has basically had 3 periods of glory and I was there for 2 of them. It's not being a caveman to regret that all of this will either be forgotten or have an asterisk placed next to it. Sentiment, Pride, Nostalgia, etc are not the attributes of cavemen, MTK. Quite the opposite actually. And of course there will be a lingering sense of grievance that this was unjustified and forced on us. May the caveman ask why you are so cool with it? Why are you seemingly happy that this happened to us? |

There was nothing stopping a public outcry from Native Americans in support of the name. They could have been putting banners "this is our team" and gotten publicity for their lands and tribes.
