The former four-time Pro Bowler still very much intends on playing football, and he’s also generating interest from a couple of teams. Per Wolfson, those teams are the Dallas Cowboys and Washington Commanders. While the Commanders have “kicked the tires” on a potential move to sign Barr, the Cowboys have seemed like the most interested team overall.
Good to know they are looking at proven veteran LBs. There are quality veteran depth guys out there. I would feel much better about the defense if we picked up vet lb and Collins before camp. Could be waiting to see how the first couple weeks go, any injuries, etc before making a move. I see depth on defense at LB, possibly CB and Buffalo nickel as still kinda an issue |

(Sidenote, it's like forgetting to buy sausages and ribs going to a barbecue and go "let's have a vegan barbecue"... Yeah genius like we have a choice...). So we can still try to hope it's just PR to not sound desperate in negotiations, but it's not like any remaining FA vet is gonna be crazy expensive either... To me it looks more and more like I was right to freak out since way before the draft and they are not going to sign anybody. Our base D really isn’t 4-3 anyway, it’s been more of a 4-2-5 under JDR

Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
Even if we run 2 LB sets 100% of the time we still have no depth and are PRAYING J. Davis makes a huge leap in year 2.
LB was a weakness last year and we’ve done nothing to address it so I’m assuming it will once again be a weakness |

And like has been said we have zero depth, so zero rotation, and one injury means David Mayo is the QB of your defense. We'll talk about it again when we're getting gashed up the middle for 60 minutes several weeks in a row. Envoyé de mon SHV48 en utilisant Tapatalk |

So many talented defensive players didn't live up to their billing last season that need to turn it around. Loads of talent. I expect to see more 5 man fronts also which is why I think they didn't go after more lbs. Hope they do soon. Fully expect the defense to be better. Think the rookies also (Mathis, Butler, Holmes) will help. Butler is supposed to have crazy range. Mathis adds to an already uber talented line. |

Well at least the melody is gonna stay about the same, that's a plus in my book... But I'm still amazed that after giving zero f*cks about the fans' opinions regarding the name, they are making us vote on emoflags (or whatever that was called) and a couple of words in the fight song ("fight for our commanders" or "leaders on a mission" instead of "braves on the warpath")... "The choice is yours" "Choose your favorite lyrics"... The whole course has been decided, and just because you can't decide wether to put parmesan or emmental on the pasta you're asking for our opinions and we have to feel like our voices matter ? Joke. Anyway, to be honest that's way better than what could've been. Our fight song pretty much stays... |
Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
I feel the best thing to do w/ the fight song is to just play it w/out lyrics. To put that stupid ass name Commanders in the fight song really makes me want to vomit. It just ruins everything.
Putting Commanders in that once iconic fight song is like fingernails on a chalk board. |

We'll see how running a 4-2 defense works against the teams that can really run the ball. Let's see how it holds up against the Eagles. Let's see how it holds up against Derrick Henry.

Kyzir White (lb) - signed w eagles for 1 yr/3M w incentives to bring it to 5m
White just turned 26 on Thursday and finished up his rookie contract with the Chargers as a 2018 fourth-round pick on an up note, piling up 144 tackles over 17 starts, which ranked eighth in the NFL. He also had two interceptions. At 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds, White will be penciled in as the Eagles’ starting off-ball LB next to T.J. Edwards and, on paper, at least, those two look like a good complement for each other with the 240-pound Edwards serving as the thumper in run support at MIKE (middle linebacker) and the speedy White being able to run with backs and tight ends in coverage as the WILL (weakside LB). I just wonder who's idea it was to run a 4-2? I'm not a fan of that defense at all. I know Brandon Staley does it and he is like the worst coach in the history of coaches. Now Del Rio and Ron are doing it and I think very little of Del Rio at this point. A better coach could get more out of this defense.
I hate to say it but Gregg Williams could get more out of these guys than Del Rio. We'll see but I have seen enough to know that either the talent is overrated or the coaching isn't good enough. Probably a little of both. |

Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
I'd bet a good majority of the league plays in a nickel/dime hybrid type of D most of the time. The old days of lining up strictly 3-4 or 4-3 70% of the time is over.

I was in favor of Myles Jack who signed for 8M/y with the Steelers. But if we're talking cheaper options, Van Noyle signed for 2.25 M with the Chargers. In terms of guys still available, I'd give a vet min contract to Joe Schobert too, coming of a 1.7M contract with the Steelers he can't possibly be asking for crazy money, he's only 28, never injured from what I can find online, at the very least cheap quality depth... Anyway, options being available or not isn't the issue. The coaching staff's will to address this glaring issue is. |

In 2020, we could barely line up 3 decent LBs and it turned out to be a top 5 D. Yeah they played some backup QBs, but you can only play who is in front of you. If we get that D, with the potential this offense has - it could be a fun season. I'm just saying I'm not panicking yet. They are pretty deep in the secondary - lot of good young talent there. The D-line, especially when C Young comes back should be more than solid. And RR said flat out that they would see how things go once training camp begins, and if it looks like they need to add a LB he would. |

I don't think it matters much if we like the depth at DE. RR seems to be ok with it. I thought they all played well in Young / Sweat's absence last year too. With Young out for an extended amount of time, Rivera expects the depth at defensive end to step up in his absence. Players like James Smith-Williams and Casey Toohill will get an opportunity to contribute, and Rivera believes the depth at the position can handle the extra responsibilities. All our depth guys - once we start the season - will be "NFL-quality" or they wouldn't be on this NFL roster. Maybe you can give me a big name on an NFL roster who is #3 on their depth chart at DE, and is more of an "NFL-quality" guy than what we have. I'll bet the #3 and #F4 DEs on other rosters all stack up pretty evenly with the depth at DE on this team. |

But still 23.4% is something. We can't play it correctly as of now. And we have zero possible rotation on our 2 LBs set. And we're one injury away from XFL level play at the position. |
Re: 2022 Commanders off season thread part 1
I'm not ready to hit the panic button yet. RR and JDR are going into year 3. It was a 3-5 year plan from the get-go, and we haven't seen a snap in year 3 yet. Going into year 3, this roster is much better (and deeper) than it was when they got here, at pretty much every position group - especially the so called "skill positions".
I'll admit that it does feel a bit odd that that the one position group that appears (from the outside looking in) to be neglected is the same position both the HC and DC played. Although, they did spend a 1st round draft pick on a LB last year...hopefully JD shows improvement in year 2. I don't know, we'll see...there's still five weeks before game 1. There's still plenty of time to make a move there if they think they need to. There will be quality players released, and there are still quality players that remain unsigned. But like I said, I'm not in panic mode about it. I'm pretty excited to see this team take the field. I'm optimistic for a big turnaround this year. |
