If you view this as just a strictly PSI issue for one game = it would seem harsh

if you view this as more than a PSI issue for one game = it would seem fair imo

** i fully believe that if the term "tampered" was used from the beginning instead of "deflate", public opinion would be more critical of Brady and the Pats.

I believe that 2 of the more important aspects of persuading a group of people comes down to branding (think anti-abortion compared to pro-life or riots versus protest or pro-2nd amendment versus pro-gun) and primacy over recency.

You get your story out first, you tell it in a way that people can readily understand and present it in a way that seems believable = people's brains will accept it as true bc people's brains want things to be simple, easy and routine.

You present something that gives the brain pause or doesnt quite pass the subconscious smell test = brain is activated and brain starts looking at things critically .. sometimes too critically if bells and alarms went off.

I agree on all points made.

Patriots broke a rule and lied/covered up. We did something that was legal and within the CBA and still got punished. Since 28 teams all signed off on our punishment, I'd say we are down to 27 that need to get their just dues.

What cracks me up is the NFL actually spent millions on this, put in numerous amounts of hours, all cause a ball was deflated 1.2 psi. Think about how really stupid that is, and how ridiculous it is that they would go to those lengths to prove something so minor.

To me it just should have been handled with a simple phone call by someone in the league office to the head coach. A warning should have been given and be done with it.

What does the NFL sell? Incredibly competitive football games. So competitive that they draw in the emotions of millions of fans willing to pay tons of money to attend those games, watch them on TV, buy concessions, buy jerseys, etc. etc.

But as soon as the competitiveness of the very product they're selling is compromised, you're talking about risking the Golden Goose.

The time and money spent on the Wells report pales in comparison to protecting the immense revenue stream their competitive games generate.

If competition is the rationale, the league should have punished the Colts for playing terrible.

The integrity of the game is more important to a $9 Billion a year league than the cost of a thorough investigation. The NFL pays their commissioner $32 million a year. So what. What the fuck does the cost of the investigation have to do with this?

The punishment is not so much about the 1.2psi. It is about not cooperating with a serious NFL investigation on a team that has cheated and been caught before. Why did Brady not give up his texts? Why did the Patriots not make the ball guy available one more time after the investigation had discovered new evidence and wanted to ask him about it?

Every team breaks rules and most of those violations end exactly like the post above says, with a phone call that says we know what you're doing, quit.

Brady's punishment is a farce. Zero impact on the competitiveness of that game.

Intentionally roughing the passer has more of an impact on the outcomes of games than deflating a ball 1.2 psi. Suspend those guys. They are intentionally breaking a rule that impacts the competitiveness of the game.

Bingo.
Brady made the personal choice not turn over his texts, knowing full well the risk of getting fined, suspended and his team getting fined and losing incredibly valuable draft picks. Rather than turning over the texts and (option 1) possibly getting exonerated. Or (option 2) turning over the texts, been found guilty, accepted the blame and taken full responsibility.
So now that Brady made the personal decision not to turn over possible incriminating texts then take the next logical step: he lied to the fans, his coach, his owner, the league, the commissioner and to most importantly the investigation. Obstruction of justice is a crime not just in the NFL but everywhere in this country.
This is no longer about 1.2psi.
It is about a team that has been caught TWICE breaking the rules and now not cooperating with an impartial investigation.

And changing the "rules" on how we could split it up after announcing it. And repeated ad nauseum, we broke no rule. The NFL owners just couldn't enforce their illegal collusion to keep the cap in an uncapped year, when the Players Union could have acted. They could only get revenge on us afterwards, after DeMaurice Smith signed away the union's right to take action.
