It's a week to week league. If KC throws a couple picks and we lose next week, it will be "fire Gruden and who's the top qb in the draft!"

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
My preseason take on Cousins:
He is a classic Gruden QB. Technically sound but overwhelmingly mediocre. He will look great when things are perfect. When the play call matches the defense, when the primary read is open, when he gets great protection and most importantly, when he is playing with the lead. When any of those break down however, so does he...quickly.

Ask him to perform at a high level over a period of time and you will be disappointed. He is too careless with the ball, too pre-determined with where the ball will go and doesn't rally from adversity well.

If he starts all 16 games, he will probably put up good numbers on paper.. 3200 or so yards, 5 or 6 300 yard games, probably 18-24 TD with 14-18 INT.. The reality however will probably result in a 3-5 win season and fans hoping 'that he can put it all together with a full offseason of being the starter'.

Ultimately Cousins is fools gold.
So looking back at where I was at the beginning of the season and where I am now, Cousins has moved the needle for me. I am no longer of the mindset that he is a backup/fringe starter. I think he's a bonafide starting QB in the category 12-18 range in comparison with his peers. He's not a star but he's also not a weekly liability. Obviously he should be back on a 2-3 year extension and QB isn't at the top of our draft board which is good.

He's protected the ball better than I thought he could, which was a major concern going into the season. He has benefitted from some luck on a few head scratchers (like the late play against the Bears into triple coverage that Jones caught off the deflection) but for the most part he's not been overly careless. He does check the ball down too quickly but hopefully that changes with experience and time in the offense.

This offseason should be good for him to continue to develop & have McCloughan surround him with a better running game and a bigger WR to replace Garcon.

Arrow pointing up.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Being right? I like that! I was on a KC could be the next Drew Brees kick months ago and notice the stats below. After 3 FULL SEASONS as a starter, many thought Brees was a bust, including his own team who went out and drafted Philip Rivers to replace him. Yes, Brees is having a down year by his standards, but KC is ascending and can (should) still get better. He still only has 23 starts under his belt and hasn't had a single off-season and training camp as the undisputed starter.

Drew Brees 3,794 yards 25TDs 11INTs 67%
Cousins 3,625 yards 22TDs 11INTs 69% (also has 5 rushing TDs)

Both have a 97 passer rating.
I think I'll take the next drew brees!

Things sure have changed around here regarding KC lol. In the end it's not about who was right or wrong. It's just good to see stability at the QB position, w/out any week to week drama. It looks like we'll have that for the next several years.

Where are you reading hating and not believing??

I've seen several recants on here.

Actually I'd like RG3's rushing TD record to stand as a testament to his true skills.

I'ld love to see RG3 remembered positively for what he did do and released, and for KC to take the reins going forward - which he definitely has done this season.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

It's encouraging that Cousins has been able to quickly nip the turnovers in the bud. You have a guy like the "golden child" Luck who hasn't really been able to shake the turnovers but the media has overlooked it time and time again, and contrast that with Kirk who hasn't really been turning the ball over with any regularity in over a month yet the media still always seems to mention "if he can keep the turnovers in check" whenever the subject of Kirk is brought up.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Gruden and McVay really opened up the offense yesterday. Had a lot of longer routes than usual, seem like Jordan was split out more than usual, longer developing plays etc.

You could see the emphasis to get D Jax more touches, I like that.

Seems like more layers were added in the passing attack which just shows more faith in Cousins.

I like Cousins potential because he doesn't take a lot of sacks, so he doesn't get hurt much. BUT, all the positive press and crazy stats makes me worry(in a Redskins fan paranoia way) that the season is a bit fluky, and we will see regression next year - assuming we don't bungle the extension/resigning of him.

from the article:
But nobody quite realized that Cousins’ home season was history in the making. The NFL revealed today that no quarterback in league history with a minimum of 100 pass attempts at home has had a higher completion percentage than Cousins’ mark of 74.7. Not Brady in Foxborough, not Manning in the dome in Indy, not Brees in the Superdome, not Marino at the Orange Bowl.
Totally agree. That's what makes the Dallas game so baffling.

I was behind on reading the thread (because of the birth of my child) but up until before Sundays game some people still calling for RG3 snd/or saying he is a superior QB.

2012 was a magical year and I will always remember Griff for that but I can't keep living in the past.

If Kirk breaks Griffs record, we can finally maybe put all the comparisons behind and just roll into the future. I just want to win!

Was going to bold the same thing and say "sure it is". Lol.
Dude is playing at an elite level over a period of a few weeks. This all on a team who is rebuilding and also during a "code red" stretch. Pressure on. We keep saying this is what he has the potential to be. Than he exceeds those expectations. Than we go "well he maybe is more than just the best qb available. So lets try n project his future instead of just reporting the obvious. So here goes. This guy is going to be a top 5 type qb some day. Boom. HTTR!

Chico23231 12-21-2015 03:21 PM

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I just don't think this is about all Cousins, I think its really about Gruden, McVay and Cousins. Cousins isn't an elite, top 5, carry everything on his shoulders type QB...they are super rare.

But the Skins did get a taste of that "eliteness" with RG3...everything was there. Big plays, armstrength, make every throw, win big games, vocal, says all the right things, leader, etc. So as a fanbase, we all thought we had this finally!!!

Reality set in the previous 2 years, so even with Cousins doing all this...I still know he has limitations. With that being said, Gruden is brought in as QB/Offensive Guru so its his responsibility to get this thing together. McVay still has a lot to prove as a O Coordinator.

So I think we can say Cousins, Gruden and McVay have all made stride this year. Lets continue to build, but lets stay a little medium with this.

Did Griff ever have a qbr of 120 at home n go 6-2? Maybe he had limitations. Im sick of that crap. Ya dont have to be flashy to be great ya just gotta be great. Ive seen Cousins carry this team plenty this year. Plenty enough to know that he can do it again n again.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I agree with whoever mentioned Jordan Reed being split out more yesterday. I am used to seeing him run those 5-7 yard routes where he usually gets contact at the point of catch and fights for the first down.

Not sure if McVay saw a weakness in Buffalo's secondary specifically or they just decided the time was right, but Reed was all over the place getting open. He is such a mis-match for any defense that wants to play safties due to be worried about Jackson over the top. Reed was simply running down middle of the field, baiting a safety into coming up to cover, and just juked them. Wide open.

probably not the place, but for those who cry to get rid of DJax, when he is healthy, he changes the other team's game plan. And if you say, yeah but only when he's healthy, I'll say ok, but let's see what the draft brings and if we get a guy, then fine, otherwise DJax is a top guy when he does what he does.

Only time i ever called for djax head was after the backwards run/fumble. That was pure anger. Always want him on this team until he loses a step. Dudes a game-changer.
That being said if I recall he was waving the ball around alittle early again yesterday on the TD. I could be mistaken but wasnt he holding it out with his rite hand at like the ten yard line? He needs to stop that shit because next time it costs us a game the hate will never subside !

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Big DJax fan, how much do you pay him and for how long?

The dude is super talented and absolutely opens everything up for other receivers and affects our running game.

Fast twitch guys are always having issues with hamstrings but how much did his offseason preparation affect his early season availability? Did he come in this year in top shape? I honestly have no idea, but TBH it's a concern. That and the reality show.

He didn't affect any defense when he wasn't on the field.

If he would listen to his mama, I'd say back the truck up and pay the dude now.

McLovin's big money signings won't be looking 1 year in advance and I'm not sure he is a guy you pay top shelf money to over a long term deal. There is a team somewhere that will however.

I don't think he is here after 2016.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

So I find it interesting the running game has improved as Cousins has gotten better.

Could it be that the fact Cousins is playing well enough to open up the running game?!?!

What more do we want from a QB. He has been pretty damn good this season with little to no running game, I believe his play is driving the running production we have been getting lately. How is that not a carry? He is the best young QB we have had since Trent Green.

/sarcasm on

The fact Cousins is having one of the best QB seasons in the history for the redskins, throwing 2TDs for every INT, running for a TD every 3 games, playing great at home, playing great in the redzone, playing great in the 4th quarter and (most importantly) earned the respect, trust and confidence of the locker room hasn't really sold me on Kirk..........................

Big Question on my mind is do the redskins give Kirk a new contract? Does it pay him starter money? I haven't followed the "news" or other rumors, and unless told by a credible source believe it possible that Cousins could enter Free Agency...

One thing I really respect Jay Gruden for now, and it is known that I was not a Jay Gruden fan from day one - He has assured Cousins that he is the starter going forward, and to not look over his shoulder after a bonehead INT or a bad game...I think that is only going to help Cousins.

He is by far the best QB on this team, there should be no discussion. He has united the locker room, and gained the trust and respect of ownership and his coaches. I hope IF Cousins gets a contract, it is a fair contract that ensures he is our starter and we can build around him. I think he has obviously won everyone over, as the "You like that chants" were deafening on Sunday.....

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

YEA That D JAX showboating thing is not cool..he needs to keep the ball tucked away until he crosses the line ..then do whatever.I thought he may have gotten humbled after the dallas fiasco..the run issues in my opinion are because of the loss of Niles Paul he is a great blocker..IF the skins can keep this bunch intact and get back the injured players with a few Draft picks and FA pickups this could be a very good team!

As far as KEEPING KIRK..uh Yea I believe they will sign him to a long contract.not only is he the best QB on the Redskins ..he is looking like a top 10 QB in the entire league..but I know there are still doubters and he is a couple of picks away from being a bum again..whatever…IT really does seem that most of the Kirk doubters are younger fans who never had a chance to witness the GLORY YEARS.. the redskins won super bowls with QB's not much better than Cousins..and given time He could be one of the best QB's to wear the B&G !!!

Been a huge fan of Grudens treatment of KC all year. Thru all the "he has it in for griff", "the playcalling sucks" bullcrap - it was obvious that Gruden saw a future with KC. He knows how important the QB position is, and he knows the struggles The franchise has endured since number 7. He knew that if he kept true to his plan that he and SM and KC could make it work. Now we are starting to see it on the field. No doubt in my mind we go to Philly on an effin mission and leave with a division crown. The future is very bright for this team and if anyone has a problem with any of the pieces you need to relax. This team has the HC, QB, and GM to make some serious effin noise over the next few years. HTTR!
