Re: HD Projectors??? Help
i have been reading about the rainbows .........i am trying to figure out exactley what that is....
When you scan across a DLP image, some people see little flashes of the color spectrum. It's a result of the way DLP works. It uses a color wheel spinning in front of a light reflected off a mirror, which causes a kind of latency that some people's eyes are sensitive to. Go to Circuit City or whatever, find a DLP, stand in front of it, and scan your eyes from left to right across the screen at various speeds as a video is playing (and try to ignore the strange looks people are giving you).

DLP technology is improving, which has reduced the problem somewhat. However, it's still there. Check out this thread:

ok I have seen examples of rainbows.....yeah that seems like it could be a problem.... i am thinking in that $ 2000 - 3000 price range all dlp's would have the rainbow effect...... i am kinda sensitive to visual things like that...... I may have to look at LCD's but then Do the deep blacks make the picture any better?

It can make a difference in movies with dark scenes (e.g., night scenes), because the LCD can't create "true" black (i.e. absence of light) because of the way the panel is illuminated. DLP does a better job, because it can "turn off" the mirror that reflects light for a given pixel, which creates a darker black. CRT is hands down the best for black level, but you obviously make some size sacrifices with CRT.

I don't understand what you mean by 10%. My Panny 75u was classified as a business product (as opposed to consumer product), so I got a great warranty. I have heard that the consumer electronics service ain't all that great. I don't know anything about Sanyo service.

Well I meant I had basically decided on the sanyo...but not totally ruled out the Panny...... I think it would be dead even if the panny didn't have customer service problems that could be the winner tho..... Oh btw that AVS site is awesome....ty

Re: HD Projectors??? Help

I did before I got rid of it. Watching a game in HD on a 7-foot screen (or 10-foot screen) is incredible. Our new house didn't have the right room for it (no ambient light control), so we went with a RPTV (the DLP). Still, games in HD are awesome. Even on a 30" LCD, it blows away anything I had seen before HDTV came around.

I should mention, you won't see as much of a difference between LCD/DLP/CRT RPTVs for sports as you will for movies, etc., because black level and contrast aren't as big of issues. The colors are usually so bright that the differences are minimized. I can't tell a meaningful difference between them, anyway!
