Re: ESPN reports Mariucci is out of the running for the HC job in Washington.

Back in '04 -- before Gibbs was hired -- I was a big fan of bringing in Coughlin to coach. For some reason, his name was never mentioned on the list of candidates. Knowing the trouble he went through in NY, he wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes under Lil' Danny.

Now, there's NO WAY the Giants let him loose.

Coughlin and Brunell reunited again!

Re: ESPN reports Mariucci is out of the running for the HC job in Washington.

Funny how when the first candidates were mentioned I liked Fassel. I would prefer someone who has had HC experience. Then Mariucci's name came up. I figured that he would be a lock due to him being from the WC offensive tree and would help Zorn with all the changes on offense.

Last night I was looking up the "coaching trees" and it took me to Wiki and I found that (If it has not been altered.) there were six coach's under Bill Walsh. Holmgren, Hackett, Wyche, Seifert, Green and none other then FASSEL. He was a teacher to John Fox his only protege who has not been too bad in the past. Having said that which is the best candidate? Either Fassel will bring the orginal WC with him and add it to what Zorn has or Zorn will teach Fassel something, maybe spring board Fassel's career again. lol.

Perhaps this is DS plan...wear out the fans until they simply say just pick someone already.

I'm not sure if Meeks would be a good candidate at this point. I revert back to is Meeks Defensive style similar to Blache's. If not then perhaps he is not the best choice.

Then I look at Spag. His Defensive style does not look remotely close to Blache's. Can they co-exist? is there some way they can blend the two? A front four that is a monster at rushing the QB and yet have maybe an extra man perhaps a safety or cornerback in the box to not only add speed at rushing but able to meneuver through the holes undetected to sack the QB. Who knows. It would be nice to have a HC who's not over the hill. lol.

I'm not sure who the best answer is but I heard on the radio that DS is still consulting JG in regards to the HC.

The more I think about it, the more I think that a lot of GM's and suits around the league think of Spag's as a younger version of Jim Johnson, and on top of that a version willing to take a head coaching position.
Among the names I've heard so far, Mariucci was my favorite. I'd be fine with Fassel.

But Spagnuolo -- he's the flavor of the week. Just like Norv without Aikman, Emmitt and Irvin, Spags will be nothing without Strahan, Umenyiora, and Tuck.
Why would you assume Spags will be nothing without Strahan, Umenyiora or Tuck, that makes no sense?

I disagree totally, the guy has a solid resume and now a nice ring to go with it, going all the way back to even starting his career here in DC in 1983 (or maybe this was his second job). First of all he's not being interviewed for DC, of course as HC with his one year at DC and GREAT success his finger print would be all over the D IMO. But I don't see ANY reason why he can't succeed at the HC level for the SKINS.

Only guy that would make sense now is Fassel. He has coached in the NFC East, been to a SB, and the only one with HC experience. I really don't want to take more of a risk with a rookie HC.

It's the "in thing" to do when one likes to gloom and doom all day long. Of course, if we hire Spagnuolo, then the DS bashers will call him Norv turner 2.0. But, if he found another head coaching job and became the next winning dynasty head coach, then the DS bashers will bash him for not picking Spags to be our head coach. I personally like the idea of hiring him, because I think he's going to be in a perfect position to be successful. He would be inheriting a playoff team who has most of their coaches coming back. The big question mark will be the offense, but everybody seems to believe Zorn is the next offensive mastermind. I see no reason why we shouldn't give him a chance.

I'll be honest, I think the Skins are going to have a hard time filling the position. People just dont want to work under Snyder. Not being able to pick your own assistants is going to be a problem for a lot of guys, as well. FWIW, Pierce today said we should expect Spagnolo to be back in NY. Now that I said that, he should probably look for a house in the DC area.

I guess it worked for the Cowboys this year with Garrett being a first time OC and Wade Phillips really being defensive minded. But hiring Spagnuolo would make me wonder what exactly is the deal with Blache, and Phillips had experience as a head coach before Dallas

I don't really feel like Blache is a long term guy in Washington. He might be here for another season, two at tops. I believe this will probably be more evident if we do hire someone like Meeks or Spaguolo.

Then again, if we hire Fassel, Rex Ryan might be realistic in a couple of years.

On another board, I read that Adam Schefter of NFL Total Access said that Snyder called Mariucci today to tell him that the report about him being out of the running is untrue.

The original article in this thread was amended at some point today:

"Steve Mariucci has not been eliminated from contention, according to one of the people familiar with the process, but the former San Francisco 49ers and Detroit Lions coach has not been contacted for a follow-up interview after meeting with Snyder last week."

I will update the thread title

Now I'm sure it's just PR to get all the fans to say "Pick some one already!" and when he does we will all say "ABOUT TIME" instead of "Why him?" or "He sucks!" at the presser. lol.

Well, this guy's out.... no wait... he's still in. Sorry, he's out... hold on... they're talking to someone else. Ok, the other guy is definately out... or maybe not.

Zzzzz.... Somebody wake me when we've selected a coach.
