I think the only cure for Favre's itch is football, and it will lead him back to the football field. I don't see Favre staying retired, if he ever really was in his own mind for more than a day or two?

Jason Wilde of the [I]Wisconsin State Journal[/I] is reporting that Favre (possibly with his agent, Bus Cook, acting as an intermediary) contacted the Packers within the past few weeks about returning, and that [URL="http://www.madison.com/wsj/blogs/Packers/294432"]the conversation ended in Favre asking the club for his release[/URL]. The Packers refused.
As [URL="http://www.profootballtalk.com/2008/06/30/cook-pushing-favre-to-play/"]we’ve previously noted[/URL], if Favre does decide he wants to play again, his options are to play for the Packers, or not to play at all — unless he can convince the team to trade or release him.
If the [I]State Journal[/I]’s report that Favre contacted the team about returning is correct, the Packers may have told Favre that they’re ready to move on, begin the Aaron Rodgers era, and save the $10 million-plus Favre is owed this year on his current contract. That’s where a request from Favre that the team release him would come from.
The Packers placed Favre on the reserve/retired list on April 25, but Favre can request that the team activate him from the list, in which case the team would either need to put him on the active roster, trade him or cut him.

If Favre does come back, then he needs to do it with a team other than the Packers. It's not fair to Aaron Rodgers to do that to him. Rodgers had to wait 3 seasons before Favre finally hung it up, and he finally got this chance to prove himself and now if Favre comes back he might not even have that chance now. Rodgers was under the assumption that he's the main guy now, you can't just take that away from him because Favre wants to come back and play.

If the Packers release him, it would take less than 30 seconds for the Vikings to be all over that

Not if Miami claimed him up on the waiver wire first. I think they could probably trade Favre if he wanted to play again, there are some qb needy teams out there in the league that would give up a pick for him. I don't think Green Bay would trade him to Minny though, that would be akin to us trading Art Monk to Dallas lolol.

Thanks for not locking this thread. I promise not to post unless it's a valid post. Otherwise my post number would be perhaps quite inflated... If ya don't wanna read about news about Brett Favre then don't read the thread.

I think if you're the Packers you have to tell Favre thanks but no thanks and work out a trade or release him. Sure he can still play and they most likely would have a better shot with him at the helm but it's not fair to Rodgers. The team moved forward this offseason with Rodgers as their QB and to yank that out from under him at this point doesn't make sense. It's his time.

I've got nothing against Favre and I'll admit I'm a big fan of his. If he wants to come back and play fine, come back and play. But it does put the Packers in a difficult position that's for sure.

Probably not the exact same situation, but what would you say if Joe Gibbs announced today he wanted to come back and coach the Redskins.

Definitely a different scenario but just to answer the question if that were to happen you couldn't bring him back this late in the offseason. The team has already moved on and have transitioned to Zorn.

Gibbs was pretty comfortable with his decision to retire again, he seemed like a different person at his announcement, like he had been set free.

Favre clearly was not as comfortable with his decision as most everyone could tell. It's really not a big shocker that we're sitting here talking about him possibly coming back.

I'd say no and I personaly feel its time for the Redskins to move on with a fresh young Coach. Now I would not have a problem with him as a general Mgr. kind of like what the Tuna ia doing in Miami but Gibbs moved on at the right time. While I think Gibbs did a great job helping getting this team reorganized I think he is a little too much old school in play calling for todays NFL.

I don't know about the rest of you, but Favres "up and down, coming or going, retiring or playing" antics for the past 3 years is beginning to bore the hell out of me.

I just want him to fight, fart or get off the damn fence. Make a decision and stick by it.

On the other hand, it gives the media something to talk about during the deadest part of the off season.

I think this is the reason this topic is getting so much air-time. If there was other stuff to talk about around the league we would most likely be talking about it. It's either talk about Favre, or all the players getting arrested for assault or getting charged for DUI.

I completely agree. Either commit to playing or come out and say once and for all, 'Regardless of what happens, I'm done!' but it's such an ego stroke to have the entire NFL world fawning over this decision. My respect for Favre diminishes each time I hear this foolishness rehashed.

I really don't know how in conscience he could put on a Green Bay uniform again. Not to mention the media scrutiny he would be under every single week. Anything short of a Super Bowl trophy would be a bust.

In my humble opinion, Favre can do whatever he wants as far as deciding to play or not. He's a first ballot HOFer. If he plays 1 down on any team it's notable. He has broken tons of records (also most INTs record). Dude is a living legend and as I don't wanna sound like John Madden on this one, he's played thru injury, personal tragedy. loss and addiction. He is the slow and steady that wins the race. Favre has til September til I call him fickle.
