Re: Levi Jones released by the Bengals

If vallin's OLine is right, we would have only changed two players, and gotten one new backup in Bridges.

And 3 out of 5 are possible injury candidates.

Is that good enough?

I would say yes, but only by a hair. As is often the case, our season will rise and fall based on injuries.
I am sure I have done it, but how can you put these two points in the same reply. Your logic says we have had enough injured players, so no Levi (ok, I understand that); but Jansen can make a solid comeback since he was a great Tackle(Levi was not shabby either) until injuries derailed him.

Your basic flow then is don't get the oft injured tackle, lets count on the oft injured tackle.

We obviously are doing the Golden Corral of RT's so we might as well have a serving of Levi on our plate if we can sign him appropriately.
No, let me explain...we have no choice with Jansen...he's already here and he was "injured in the line of duty for US". Levi is someone elses issue, so he would need to be far and away a better option and not much of an injury risk. We have the option NOT to pick up Levi. Let Jansen show what he can do...if not, he's toast. I just have a feeling about him. I could be wrong, but Jansen might be a much better tackle this year. Time will tell.
Hope that explains it.
Don't know where you're getting that $8 million from. It seems like that's a bit high. I think I saw around $5 million before the draft from another source and if you count Barnes and Orakpo's contracts that would probably take us down to about $2 million. Also if we had $8 million in cap space I'm sure we would be making more moves than just signing people for the vet min.
Anyways I doubt we'll bring him in. Everybody seems okay with the competition between the guys we got now.
It's from this website:

8.8 mil...but you are correct in that Orakpo and Barnes have not been signed yet. Don't think Barnes is going to hurt us much, but Orakpo will.

jsarno. Gotcha, that makes it a little clearer, I still think our OLine buffet can use as many bodies as possible, heck if only to limit wear and tear on our starters until the season. In the end what matters is that whatever the lineup, we want to have enough useful contributors to pick up the slack when one goes down, cuz we won't make it through the year without ANY injuries.

It's 8.8 minus a little over 3 mill for our rookie pool.

I was wondering about that...it doesn't say it on the cap summary page...it's blank.
I really doubt vet min gets him in camp. But he is a proven starter, and worth getting into camp. As much as I love the idea of Mike Williams on the goal line, he hasn't played a down in several years. This guy was a starter, and he faced the Balt/Pitt Defenses regularly. That means something in terms of facing DWare, or Usi, or the rest of the NFC East.
Talk about "Heavy Jumbo". Let M. Williams be the wing! ha ha ha Portis following Caveman following Williams. Now that is smashmouth!

Well, I see your point, and I won't object IF it's a vet min deal...but what are the odds we get that from Levi?

Given the circumstances his agent might try & find a 1 yr. vet min. deal w/incentives just to try & get his client in position to maybe land a long-term deal. I don't know of a team that has a greater need for a starter than the skins.

Pitt. has a need there, but I don't see them signing him. Oakland might throw a few extra dollars his way.

well, and i don't know, but if we sign him to a market based contract (no where near the 3M he is due, but over vet min) and he is a camp cut, no harm no foul salary cap wise right? and if he is capable, than he helps us at a higher tag. I would price him under Dock, over vet min.

It would be curious to see if Pitt made a run at him, kinda like Canty with the Giants, the losing teams division foes make a good comparison to see if they think he is worth it.

ours is 3.46Million. I think it is at the end of the Salary Cap thread as well as CC's new numbers.
Well this is funny cuz i just posted today on the Bridges thread saying how surprising it is Levi hadn't been cut...

We need to sign him IMO, period. I know it will cost a pretty penny...probably take a good chunk of our cap space left on the year. Right now our RT prospects are mediocre (Jansen/Heyer) to longshot (Bridges/Williams). It's another recipe for disaster along the o-line position. Maybe most importantly we don't have anyone near talented enough to fill the void at LT if Samuels still struggles w/ injury. If the FO is serious about giving JC and the offense an opportunity to be great this year Levi Jones is the man...everything else is sort of half-assing it.
I completely agree with The Goat. Even if it eats some of our $5 mil or $8 mil. cap space, whichever it is, this is the time to break out the checkbook.

Well Dockery is getting 3.2, so I would certainly hope he gets less. I am guessing your hope is that we get lucky and he plays most of the games, if not all? If he did, I'd be willing to pay more than vet min. (this is where incentives come in)

I think he is a quality starter getting replaced by a HIGH priced rookie, and therefore he had to go. yes 3 years ago, he only started 6 games, 2 years ago he started 15, and last year he started the first 10. before that though he was a consistent 15-16 starter. No one, that I know, is saying he has lost a step like Jansen has (or it has been said). So if he we get him, he is the starter, and I believe he can backup Samuels as well. That is the type of player we are lacking, and who we have been keeping the last dollars of salary cap space available. I dont really know what would be a "right" price, but I think it is worth more than just vet min to have him. I am already glad they didn't trade a 6th round pick for him!
