Re: Air France Jet Disappears on Flight From Brazil to Paris
Weird story about Stewart. My mom was one of the leads on his autopsy and confirming his cause of death. So, a few days after his death, there's a message on our home answering machine (yeah it was answering machines back then) from one of her assistants saying "I left Payne Stewart's fingers on your desk for you to review. We'll catch up tomorrow" I think it was actually some bone and tissue, not his actual finger. But still...one of the oddest messages I've heard

Did the finger point to what cause his death?

This sounds pretty terrifying. By this account, at least the passengers were passed out from the lack of cabin pressure before the plane went down. I think being awake as your plane is crashing would pretty much be the scariest thing imaginable.

Thunderstorm 50,000 feet high... insane.
Hopefully those poor people went quick. |

Hopefully those poor people went quick.
I think that has to do with the close proximity to the equator. Weather is really screwy around there. My stepdad was an engineer and worked on lots of boats, mostly for NASA and the Navy regarding rocket/missle tracking. He crossed over the equator many times, and had some pretty interesting stories about how bizarre the conditions are around the equator. |

I don't know that sounds really high. I don't think commercial airliners go above 45,000. Even if they could have gone over it the article points out sometimes a storm forms around you and you're basically stuck. |

Re: Air France Jet Disappears on Flight From Brazil to Paris
absolutely. seems like in a car it would be driving along just fine then suddenly... CRASH!! in a airplane you already have that fear while your in the air then something goes wrong and as your plane is falling to the ground you have the terrifying and ufortinate realization that your going to die.
So really, then it's a matter of what scares you more. Seeing it coming-or not seeing it coming. I love to fly, every chance I get, I fly. That is to say, it doesn't happen often, because I never have the money to go anywhere. But if I did, I would fly all the time. That being said, it IS safer then driving in a car, but that doesn't mean it's necessarily safe. Putting your life in the hands of a pilot that may or may not be a practicing alcoholic or too tired from flying 18 straight hours or whatever is definitely not safe. Safer, yes. Not safe. Shoot, walking across the street to 7-11 for a soda isn't safe anymore. Going to work isn't safe, or school. But it (flying) is safer. |
Re: Air France Jet Disappears on Flight From Brazil to Paris
I was talking to some friends about the possibilities of what happened but it really does seem terrifying, even if they were all passed out. It become like what happened to Stewart expect the plane is slowly getting ripped apart...

At least some families can find some closure now:

Re: Air France Jet Disappears on Flight From Brazil to Paris
this is so sad. first you lose a loved one in a horrible crash, then you actually get back their remains?? what's left?? i mean i can't imagine getting remains from a loved that fell 40,000 feet into the ocean, then the body, or what's left of it is floating in the ocean for a week. if it were me i'd just want my remains to stay in the ocean. sad very very sad and my heart goes out to the people and their famlies that lost loved ones.
i'm not expert on plane crashes but i remember reading about when john denver died and he crashed in the ocean. i think i read that he weighed 200lbs and they only found 100lbs of his body. |
