Anyway, Shanahan is still reportedly way in the lead

But anyways, should be an interesting team. I'm not sure it'll be the best by far though.

lol Theismann saying it comes down to the QBs in this game

Gibbs was like "what a surprise, making it all about the quarterbacks!" and they all laughed

just a heads up that this is one of their games

I agree, the only thing JT does worse than this is his Monday show on ESPN 980.

I found, what I saw of this, pretty brutal. Theisman is the worst, didn't think Gibbs added much. I typically don't like players/coaches in the booth unless they have a fiery and outgoing personality (Jaws comes to mind.)

Theisman is just awful. On the radio, in the booth, wherever. The only time I can stand him is when watching Redskins highlights from back in the day.

Love Gibbs, but he added pretty much zero to the broadcast.

Well, in fairness, Gibbs hasn't done this in eons.

True. Which makes it really strange that they would even bring him in to do a nationally televised playoff game.

I can see how the NBC people wanted someone with a perspective of the playoffs. A head coach who was 17-7 in the postseason would certainly fit the bill.

But yeah, this definitely isn't his thing.

Theisman is great in comparison to Gibbs...lol Joe Gibbs was worse than Brian Gumbel announcing for NFL Network!!!!

I dont get it, what are yall looking for in your broadcast team? I feel like Im missing out on something here but anyway JT doesnt bother me much, and what can Gibbs do that is so terrible, I mean I could listen to him talk about football and the old days no problem.

Problem is that they were assigned to announce a football game - - and one that was more important than a Week 17 clash between the Lions and the Rams - - and they were not there to "talk about football and the old days". In fact, their time together with the Redskins in the old days was so irrelevant to a Jets/Bengals game in 2010 that the references to those old days had to be dragged into the conversation with a hook.

What am I looking for in a broadcast team?

I'm looking for the play-by-play guy to get things right in terms of who carried the ball and how far he went and who made the tackle. Then give me down-and-distance accurately. Alert viewers to the fact that the Bengals had used up their challenges in the first quarter as soon as the challenge flag was thrown instead of after the fact. Stay on top of the timeout situation so that when a team calls its last one in a half it does not take until the return from commercial to let folks know that happened. Little things like that...

I'm looking for insight from the analysts. WHY did the offense make that last call and WHY did the defense play the way they did on that last play? WHO provided the key action on offense or defense that made the last play succeed or fail? WHAT might the offensive coordinator be "setting up" for future use by calling certain plays early in the game? HOW did the defense disguise its call on that last play? Gibbs provided none of that. He did give us a couple of "stories" about how Theisman flubbed a punt 25 years ago. He had so little material, they had to recycle that story twice in the game. It was lame the first time; it was insulting the second time.

I'm looking for the analysts to provide that insight without excessive verbal diahrrea. Theisman fails on that count every time he does a game.

None of the above detracts from the football accomplishments of either Joe Gibbs or Joe Theisman. It is very possible for someone to be an excellent football coach and still be a bad football announcer. Listen to Don Shula every time he visits a booth and offers commentary on the game for a quarter; he's awful. That does not detract from his coaching accomplishments which are prodigious. Or listen to Lou Holtz do any college football game. OUCH !!

It is possible for someone to be an excellent football player and still be a bad football announcer. The number of examples here is so big, this entry might crash the Warpath servers were I to try to enumerate all of them. Suffice it to say, that Joe Theisman would be on that list.
