As a kid, I was never a big fan of the Beastie Boys. I respected the hell out of them and enjoyed what they put out there, but never got real big into them.

Flash forward to a few months ago. I hadn't thought twice about them for many years. Then I was flipping around late night TV and saw this:

And it really became clear to me how genius they really were. Then when MCA passed, I went back and started listening to them again with fresh ears and eyes. I guess I really didn't understand until now...It's a shame it took MCA to pass for me to get hooked.

I know Paul's Boutique is viewed as their masterpiece, but my personal fav is Check Your Head. After that it all depends on what I'm in the mood for. I usually just hit shuffle on my BB playlist, which includes all of their stuff, and go from there.

Paul's Boutique had the hits that put them on the map but I wholeheartedly agree, Check Your Head and Ill Communication were musically and lyrically much better.

Hello Nasty wasn't as great as those other two, from a top to bottom standpoint. But there are two songs on there, Body Movin' and The Move, that are both some of the best songs they've ever done.

Man I'm going to miss them.

yeah...gotta agree with Hello Nasty. I still like several tracks on it, but as a complete album, not great. i remember traveling to Maine in college blasting the f*ck outta it though. Thats the thing with Beasties, when you think back on their music, its all about a good time. Pauls, Check Your Head, Ill Communication...those are party albums

true, Check Your Head and ill-Com are so badass, even tho we all love to say Paul's Boutique is our favorite.

i couldn't to random/shuffle with them. then again, i'm an album guy in general with all music... but especially for stuff like this.

dunno. seems like they've already done an instrumental album and some of the remaster/reissues already had extras on 'em. so i doubt there's a lot of really new/unreleased stuff that's worthy of release.

haven't seen official announcement, but my guess is the "beastie boys" are officially over as far as brand new music/appearances without MCA.


and yes, Hot Sauce is freakin great too.

no way, Paul's is really superior from a creative and production stand point. I want to say the album was largely dismissed at the time of release because people didnt "get it", it was way ahead of its time. I didnt buy the album until after Check Yo Head was released which was kinda a mini comeback. Dust Brothers just did an incredible job with the beats and production especially with the sampling. Beasties even though still juvenile with some lyrical content, were much better at their craft from license to ill. they had grown up alot. Plus those cats were experimenting with sh*t not only with hip hop and sound but with drugs which gives the album psychedelic sound along with the influnces of 60s and 70s funk and soul. Pauls to me is a landmark in Hip Hop...paved the way for rock/rap sound but also said...hey hip hop can be
