You make a good point, but I think you got to look at starting field position and the fact Cousins lead the league in INT thrown...you got to mix in the fact special teams and a turnover prone offense has had in the points allowed stat. Points allowed is more of a team stat than the specific yards allowed which tends to be move defense only. But still points allowed needs to be taken into consideration when looking at the big picture with Defense...A stat like avg yards per pass attempt and average rush yards against is another....I think overall we are average, but we handle the running game much better than passing game which I attribute to not enough pressure and very poor coverage schemes.


Anther thing with defense, are we forcing enough turnovers? This year I think its been below average, but D Hall out, I thought it would be.

Look at the 49ers they didn't have a winning season for 10 straight years with Nolan, Erickson and Singletary. Harbaugh gets hired when Singletary is fired going 6-10 in 2011. The very next year Harbaugh goes 13-3 with basically the same personnel that Singletary had.

Our D is not as bad as some make it out to be nor as good as its yardage stats say it is. It has, at various times, forced important 3 & outs only to have the offense return the favor. It has held opposing offenses w/out a TD after they were given a short field by our offense and/or ST. At the same time, they haven't flipped the field with TO's and have given up too many "explosive plays" leading to points.

Bottom line, other than the Giants game, and the 1st half v. Seattle, they have showed up to play but have been consistently put in bad situations by the O and ST.

Personally, if they got a few more TO's, I would say that the D is good enough (w/ or w/o Rak).

Think we're talking about teams turning it around during the same season in which the HC is fired.

I've always wondered how it is that some of these teams can be so bad for so long and then overnight be one of the best teams in the league. I can only factor in that each coaching staff and talent evaluators that come in and out the door do some parts right, and eventually it takes someone like Harbaugh to come along and make all of those pieces work.

Bruce Arians is another coach that has quickly turned the Cardinals around. I mean, I am so envious of the Cardinals right now. I can see Arians bringing the Lombardi home to Arizona sometime soon.

I just hope Jay Gruden has what it takes to succeed in Washington. I'm about at the point where we need to just give Gruden as much time as needed - even maybe past what others would give him - to turn things around. I think he can be a good head coach in this league. But this team is really screwed up right now and it's going to take something more than a magic bullet to turn things around.

Looking for the magic bullet is the Skins biggest problem. They want a 20yr mess turned around in 1 off season and that's impossible. It will be interesting to see if the Skins give JG the time to see if he can succeed in this league but all the past history points to him being let go in 3 years so the Skins can move on to the next hot new coach in the league.

I dont know about head coach, but the Cowboys move to Marinelli as the D Cordinator has been the difference maker for that team.

Matty is right, but i should have been more specific. Teams who've turned it around during the season when the HC has fired is worth a discussion, but i'm mostly wondering how ownership comes to the decision to fire a coach when there may be lots of problems beyond the HC, ie, players not playing well, other types of problems etc..

The best example i can think of is Andy Reid with Philly...all those NFC East Championships, Super Bowl appearance...then he had that one terrible year, and he was fired. Did he deserve to be fired? Thats the kind of things i wonder about.

The Jets have all kinds of problems, but is Rex Ryan really to blame? Does he deserve the firing that is coming??

IMO Reid was fired for not winning a Super Bowl. The crappy season was just the last straw. Of course, I'm not Jeff Lurie, so that's just my two cents.
