I believe there will be a major push to have this issue addressed and fixed in the next CBA. Perhaps adopting a rule such as the NBA that basically sets rookie contracts at 3 years and gives little to no wiggle room for teams or players.
An interesting idea I read somewhere changed the way holdouts would be handled also. Basically an "official" holdout would have to be registered with the NFLPA and the league. At that point the players rights clock would stop. Meaning if a guy "offically" held out with 365 days left on his contract then when the holdout ends he still has 365 days left on his contract. During the holdout he cannot be fined but he cannot get paid either. This would give players a lot less incentive to holdout unless they wanted to give up more time. A unofficial holdout would require a prohibitively steep per day fine of something like .5% of the current year salary and prorated bonus. For the big guys that would work out to some ridiculous numbers up into the hundreds of thousands.

It has a lot to do with the trend actively pursued by agent Drew Rosenhaus........this guy is bad news for the NFL........of course you could argue that the team owners, backload the contracts and the players never see any of the big money........so they renegotiate to get the money while they can............it seems to be a no win situation............

If they sign it they must play... Sound like a movie right???

Anyway what would happen if TO sits and the Eagles don't pay him. Then he sits another year, and the Eagles don't pay him... No way would he want to sit out 2 years back to back and he would definitely come back to play, but do the Eagles or any team for that matter have the patience to wait a player out???

Ready to run Portis out of town? Or would it be fine if Taylor waited another year to threaten a holdout all camp until he got another contract (which he hasn't done yet, he may show up to camp -- we don't know)

Taylor got jacked as a rookie with his contract. At least he's not pulling a LaVar and crying all over the media, and LaVar has no excuse because he got a contract more than he's worth already.

I agree. ESPN compared the contracts of the top ten or so draft picks last year and Taylor was rock bottom. The team initially said that they would review the terms. :oink:

Ok you fire your agent cause you do not feel he is doing the proper job. (This was Drew Rosenhaus) and hire another one who gets a deal done that you sign and verbally state that you are happy with. Then you fire that agent and hire the previous agent Drew Rosenhaus) and expect a new deal. Give me a break this guy signed a legitmate contract.

How does someone get "jacked" with their contract? Was he forced to sign at gunpoint? Was he duped? Did his high-powered lawyers conspire against him? Probably not. Even if his services to the team are worth more now than when he signed the contract, it strains credulity to think that Taylor simply overlooked that possibility when he AGREED to the deal.

Hey Greyacre - He could have held out as a rookie, but he said he wanted to get into camp, and his contract is significantly less than other picks around him, which is how those salaries are made.

I hope you guys support something like when LaVar's contract starts coming to crunch years and he says no thanks to a restructure. I hope you support him, because god knows, he signed a contract and he should get every penny.

He didn't have to out his first agent (and his current one) and sign another dope for an agent... Firing Drew was his decision not anyone elses and that was his mistake about his negotiations on his contract and the deal he signed. No one forced him to sign that deal and no one forced him to change agents during arguably the most opportune time for him to get the best contract for him done.

Why would LaVar agree to work with the Redskins on any more contracts, when he believes the team cheated him out of $6.5 million when he signed his last contract?

LaVar's situation and Taylor's/TO's situations are very different.

The main reason people are up in arms about Rosenhaus's tactics with Taylor and TO is that those players' deals are only a year old. With Taylor, it's even more infuriating, because he's an unproven player. One moderately good rookie season does not warrant a contract do-over, particularly given Taylor's ass-clownish behavior off-the-field. The Redskins shouldn't re-do Taylor's deal until he proves he can stop making boneheaded plays both on and off the field. Let him make the Pro Bowl or lead the league in interceptions to make his money (triggered by incentive clauses in his current contract), and then talk about re-doing his deal.
