There's no way in hell Brunell throws those down the field. He also doesn't evade that sack.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I'm not suggesting that MB would have made any particular play - and definitely not the throw to Lloyd that was dropped. I'm just saying that, on whole, I would not have given MB a B+ for that level of play (i.e., in terms of bad throws, bad reads, etc.). JC gets the B+ because he played a helluva game for his first time out there, and he showed a LOT of promise.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Indeed.

He just needs to tighten up that accuracy a bit. But overall, he was right on the money.

I loved him completing the pass with the defender hanging on his jersey!

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

He gets an A.

Why?

1. His poise.
2. He made plays even when the receivers did not.
3. I get to say FU to those who stayed on the #8 bandwagon.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I say the kid gets an A closer to a B. He did an excellent job of managing the O, without much help from the run game. 197 yds, no INTs, and 2 tds in your first game? That's better than some starting QBs in the league right now. I'm scared for opposing Ds when Santana gets back. Laser arm + blazing speed= TDs all day

FRPLG 11-20-2006 02:09 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I said B-/C+ because to me

A = Peyton on a good day
A-/B+ = Brady on a good day
B = Roethlisberger on a good day last year
B-/C+ = Brunell on a good day last year

He certainly didn't make outstanding plays and adjustments and just play a superb game at QB winning the game for his team for an A.

He didn't execute an entire play book and spread the ball around without mistakes and put his team in position to win for an A-/B+

I don't think he quite played mistake free and kept his team chugging along for a B.

I do think he played relatively mistake free and gave his team opportunities to make some plays. I think he was on the line between and this and the higher grade but I gave him this since we lost.

I think his effort gets an A and his peformance gets a slightly above average B-/C+. If he plays every game like that the rest of his career then he'll win games. Hell we would have won yesterday with an average performance from our defense.

That was a sweet play. That's what we've been missing with MB. Someone to make a play when the shit is hitting the fan.

I gave him a B. Although, after reading the posts, maybe he deserved an A.

He really hangs tough in the pocket and keeps his eyes downfield, very refreshing to see.

im right there with ya ..
our defense is lifeless right now......campbell was very solid for his first start.
should have started by week 4...

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Our defense was lifeless under MB, and it's just as lifeless now.

I don't know who honestly thought a QB change would improve the defense...but they must fool themseleves often.

But yeah, this game gave me no reason to believe that Jason Campbell will not one day reach his statistical projection.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Wow! Some of you guys are either Mark Brunell family members or on drugs. How can you give Campbell anything but good grades for yesterday's performance. In one game, I saw a totally different offense from the dink and dunk, three yards and a cloud of dust crap that Brunell was directing early part of the year. The Redskin offense looked like, for the first time this year, a professional offense. Plays were being attempted downfield with a moderate amount of success. Previously, the deep ball was non-existant. The Redskins rarely threw more than 15 yards downfield. Yesterday, the Skins were consistantly throwing over the middle and took a few shots deep. Mark Brunell better brush up on his clipboard duties, find a well fitted hat and a comfortable spot on the bench. I don't want to see #8 on the field as a Redskin anymore.

what would the grade be had Ladell not fumbled, or that lucky bounce in the Tampa endzone bounced the other way?

We didn't improve in yards (passing or rushing), points, or any other metric.

So if you look at the situation in a vaccuum, Jason Campbell vs. Mark Brunell this year, this team, we only have one Campbell performance to grade, but it was below what you would have expected from Mark Brunell.

So I think it's important to note the conditions, (and you don't) that Jason Campbell was making his first NFL start without Portis or Moss, and that your expectation for him was considerably lower than that of Brunell. Of course to do that, you'd have to admit that things could get a lot worse than they were under Brunell. But once you acknowledge the conditions, like I have, then you grade JC on a curved scale, and you have to like what you see.

The key is that if there is no dropoff between the QB's, then the decision to move toward the future when we did was the right one. I think Campbell did very well, all things considered, and there was a very insignificant dropoff in QB play overall.

Of course it was only a three point game...so I don't know if we would have won it with Brunell in.

Ladell hasnt fumbled much in his career, and that bounce was right in his arms, not much could be done unfortunately.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I don't look to luck when evaluating our defense's performance. It should have been pass interference on Rogers, then he was too busy celebrating to realize that they caught it. Plus, why couldnt anyone else have gone after that ball, very typical, we are always "unlucky", i'd consider it more unaware than unlucky. maybe we could have recovered the fumble sean taylor forced as well. By the way, why does rogers talk sh&t, when he gets beat more often than not, im starting to really dislike him. Is williams the reason that our players never jump on fumbles and deflections? Hey, I'm still happy we got two turnovers, finally got over that hump.

The Zimmermans 11-20-2006 04:01 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

ladell is a fumbler, you will see once he gets more of the load. Portis is just amazing at avoiding fumbles.
in the eagles game:
6 punts, 3 points, 1 int (16/31, 132yrds, 0 tds) - with moss + portis + almost 150 yards on the ground

vs TB:
5 punts, 20 points, 0 ints (19/34, 196yrds, 2 tds) - w/o moss/portis and under 70 rushing yards.

so, by every metric it was better than what finally got brunell benched. campbell's stats were also better than brunells in the dallas game (yards, tds, turnovers), and again, brunell had portis and a running game.

I saw that too. Rogers is really starting to irritate me. The guy doesn't even seem focused.

Maybe thats why I see him all the time in Tysons taking shots in Coastal Flats.....

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

campbell had a pretty solid game, i really liked his poise, scrambling ability and the way he threw on the run like the last touchdown, if we had any kind of defense and a running game we would have won pretty easy. he should have like 26-34 with 200+ yards but the recivers dropped alot of passes.

The worst was when he let up on the corner blitz. He had a clear path to the QB and just stopped

Everyone was horrible. Campbell would have been awful in that game too. Just add it to Brunell's season average and move on.

Campbell's Yards/Attempt Sunday was more than a yard below Brunell's season average. If he completes the pass to Lloyd, it would be very close...but drops/nice defensive plays don't count on Brunell's stats either.

Campbell did very well, all things considered. But just looking at the TB game and nothing but the TB game, I think Brunell would have done better. Good enough to overcome the defense? I doubt it, in which case we made the right move with the QB change.
he should have like 26-34 with 200+ yards but the recivers dropped alot of passes.
Well, he's gotta play with the deck he's been handed. A lot of things have gone wrong for us this year, maybe the least of which is receiver play, but Randle El and Lloyd and even Cooley have dropped some balls this year, for both quarterbacks now.

We were promised a mystical "spark" this week to help our receivers hands not be so hard, and help them try harder...but I guess that didn't happen.

so a small sample set is fine with campbell, but not brunell? should we compare this to brunell's last game against the bucs, since it's more apples to apples? cause that makes him look SO much better.

Cooley didn't drop the TD pass he improvised and came back to Campbell for. that ball would've been in the stands if it were Mark. same with the clutch 3rd down pass to Thrash. they stayed trying to make the play instead of expecting a throw out of bounds once the play broke down. i'd call that a spark, and thats why we're talking about JC like this today.

i also don't see any 'statistical' reason for you to assume that Campbell would've been just as bad or worse than Mark was in Philly.

You can't make any generalization with that, but you can say that he was either better or worse than what you'd expect if Brunell started.

A small sample set is never a good thing, but in the case of Campbell, it's all you have.
