Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
Agreed, and over the last two days, you've changed by opinion from "we need to draft a DE" to "we need to draft a DT." I still believe that we need to inject some youth at the DE position, but anchoring DEs can be found on the draft's second day. Also, we are pretty much stuck with Carter at the RE now and IMO he doesnt really fit in to Grilliams' scheme, although he can be a decent player for us for years.
I think we should scour free agency for a shutdown corner, but if we don't find one, we might as well stick with what we have. Sure it's risky to look the thing that killed you this season right in the eye and say that it can't screw you two years in a row, but if Nate Clements slips through our fingers, who are we going to bring in that would be an upgrade to Shawn Springs?
Clements is the only guy in free agency that would be worth pursuing. He fits Grilliams' style, big and physical. I'm thinking we've got to draft a DT or a CB with our real high pick (or trade it down and try to get both). |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
OK well those numbers are just blatantly wrong...
It was a joke. Some of you guys scare me with the way you keep cap numbers ready at a moment's notice. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
OK well those numbers are just blatantly wrong. We're currently 5 million under the cap, we can easily shed $5 million by cutting guys like John Hall and clearing TJ Duckett's voidable season off our 2007 numbers, and there is about $20-$25 million in base salaries that can/will be restructured to free up cap space.
We should have $10-$15 million in space, at minimum, to work with this offseason. Hell, we could even cut Archuleta, absorb the huge cap hit, and still grab a free agent or two. And there's no way three players will take up $21 million in cap space. ARE, Carter, Lloyd, and Archuleta combined to take up $6 million in cap space in 2006.
Don't forget that Ladell's cap number for 2007 will be in the ballpark of $3 million. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
Here's the problem with that. We already have Andre Carter who has great physical pass rushing skills. So espicially in GW's defense, the LE has to be able to anchor the run. If we can find a guy who can anchor the run and rush the passer and do both as well as anyone in the league, I'd love to have him, but I'm not sure such player exists.
Yeah that's the thing. With DE, we have Carter who has the mad pass rushing skills, but I don't think Grilliams is ever really taking the reins off Carter. He's not going to have 15 sacks in Grilliams' system. If Freeney were a Redskin, he wouldn't get more than 10 sacks here because Grilliams makes them play gap control to be mindful of stopping the run. Our DEs have good talent to stop the run (I was nervous about Carter but he's showing me some things lately) and they can rush the passer OK. It's the age of Daniels and Wynn that's a bit concerning; they're both still effective now when healthy, but they don't have too many years left. Two-way DEs are indeed very hard to find, and if we get a shot at one it's hard to pass up. But same goes for DTs, and a true shut-down CB is nearly impossible to find these days, the only one alive right now is Champ. |

Sounds to me it'll be more like $1.5 mill, but yeah I get what you're saying. Gotta factor him in. Plus we have to plan to resign Dock, and if the 'Skins were smart they'd resign Cooley too. I love the Betts contract by the way. That's a relative bargain all around. Great move by the 'Skins. See what happens when we retain our players? If you resign them before they hit the open market, you're getting to them before the agents start filling their heads with grandiose expectations of massive paydays. Players are like anyone else, they like to feel settled and secure. Betts was willing to trade a chance at a bigger payday for the knowledge that he'll be here for the forseeable future. |

Careful, you're likely to invite a tsunami of criticism by suggesting Betts has any value to the team other than to hold CP's jock when he's not using it. :oink: Some guys truly don't think that Ladell wouldn't have gotten PAID on the free market. As if we're the only team that reaches hard and vastly overpays for FA's. We just do that for every position, indiscriminately. A lot of other franchises do it once every few years or so, usually at RB or QB. |

Philly, Atlanta, and Carolina are all acutely aware of his skill set. Betts is a good backup/marginal starter. We paid him good backup money. Everyone needs to remember that the salary cap will be 109 million in 2007, it's like 20% higher than it was in 2005. So if people are comparing contracts to pre-CBA negoatiations, they need to adjust their perceptions of contract value by 20%. |

Yeah. If Grilliams took the reins off, he'd have a lot more. Carter's gotten near the QB on lots of occasions. If our secondary was worth a crap and could give him a split second more time, he'd probably have 8 right now. But our secondary blows and lets QBs throw at will; they don't hesitate to unload and consequently Carter just misses. Plus, we're not in too many 2nd and longs and 3rd and longs this year. We haven't been great against the run, so the DEs aren't getting to pin their ears back in obvious pass rushing situations. Sack numbers are an incredibly misleading way to look at DE production. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
i have this stupid, funny feeling that Carter is going to pick it up next year, so I voted DT. Even with Golston we haven't been the same in the middle this year. I have to admit I facgtored in that our draft pick is high. I would rather add a Jamal Williams than a Peppers (i know, i'm dreaming. leave me, it is all i have left).

He isn't an MLB and hasn't practiced there at all. Plus he couldn't master the scheme enough to even play in base package until week 13. He isn't going to suddenly master the scheme and be able to QB it. Plus he is a fit at OLB. His talent is wasted at MLB. It is not going to happen. MLB and OLB are not really that similar a position. He could be expected to switch to safety almost as easily as to MLB. |

This way, if a ballcarrier comes through, said player can make the tackle. Carter's best move is the speed move. So I would agree with your 'what were they thinking' assessment of the signing (for this system at least), but going foward I think the D Line can be built AROUND Carter as opposed to in spite of him. |

Williams reportedly held the reins too tight on the defensive line last year and when he finally let them loose that's when we saw guys like Daniels getting good pressure.

Williams and Blache don't let the ends chase the QB up the field on every down. They ask them to play gap control on 1st and 10 and 2nd and mediums/shorts. Take a look at the D next time, you don't see Carter and Daniels running upfield like crazy right off the snap unless it's an obvious passing situation. They kind of keep themselves in front of the tackle they're going against, that way they're able to work off the block and get to a RB coming through either gap. With all the screens being called in the league these days, having your ends just chase the QB all day is a bad idea. Your ends constantly get drawn up the field, the ball goes over their heads, and suddenly the defense has lost containment and the screen goes for a big gainer. Or on draw plays to an RB, same thing, the ends come up the field and suddenly the defense is vulnerable on the edges. They're not asked to chase down the QB with abandon like some ends around the league are. If Freeney were a Redskin, you'd be wondering what the hell is wrong with him when he only put up 8 sacks. In a Gregg Williams defense, you know a DE is having success by looking at his tackle numbers, not by looking at his sacks. If a DE is controlling his gaps then he'll make plenty of tackles, keeping RBs from gaining more than two yards, and forcing the defense into second and long. If we had a secondary, we'd be able to blitz to get our sacks. We need CB SS and DT, our ends are more than adequate. |

Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
You can't just cut a DE loose in today's NFL. Just like an overpursuing LB corps is susceptible to cutbacks, pure pass rushing DEs are susceptible to screens and draws. You have to pick your spots to turn the DEs loose, like 3rd and long.
Playing the run well is more important than sacking the QB. Your DEs will get their sacks if you can keep the offense in 3rd and longs all day. See Phillip Daniels in 2005 with 8 sacks. He's pretty average from a speed rushing standpoint, and managed to drum up eight of them. Now if we can stop the run better on 1st down, we'll have more 3rd and longs. That means more opportunities to release the hounds from the DE spot, and that leads to more sacks. Carter was disappointing in stopping the run earlier this season, but he has caught on nicely. At no point has he had the opportunities to chase the QB like Dwight Freeney does, so expecting huge sack numbers from him isn't really fair. |

Thank you. My whole thing here is that Gregg Williams' system is still pure genius. It has worked for so many years, and still will. Perhaps he got cocky and let the wrong players get away (Ryan Clark), and injuries hurt him in his secondary. But the system will still work if he can get another good safety who communicate well with Taylor, if he can get a run stopping force in the middle of the defensive line, and if he can get the CB play he needs. Maybe that CB play comes from Springs next year, or maybe we sign/draft somebody, I dunno. But with those three things, GW will have us back on top. We don't need ends and we don't need LBs; at first glance the stats tell you that the ends and LBs are having down years. But that's more due to the weakness at other positions spilling over and affecting their play. It's still a team sport, even the great Marcus Washington is going to have a down year when he doesn't have DTs keeping linemen and fullbacks away from him. |

I think he definitely was getting full of himself. He had taken a squad of mostly castoffs and unknowns and turned them into one of the league's best defenses. Now it's time for him to re-evaluate things and now that his ego has been taken down a notch hopefully he can get back to what helped him build great defenses in the past. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
I was torn between S and CB. Really, anything to help lock down our secondary would be great. Schneed's great posts really clarify why our secondary needs to be solid - we need the CB blitz packages. Maybe that means CB is more important. Anyway, that's what I voted for.

Think about it, we'll return probably 90% of the same group we've seen this year, so if the personnel doesn't see any significant overhaul, then it he has to tweek his scheme somewhere, somehow. Our defense has been on a steady decline since the '04 season, and I've long wondered if the rest of the NFL has figured him out. Since Williams has arrived we've consistently given up the big play. It's been the achilles of this team. |

If Lemar Marshall is so bad, how come he had such a good year in 2005? Did he forget how to play football? Or is it maybe that last year Salave'a was healthy and stout against opposing linemen, and paired nicely with Griffin in keeping offensive linemen from beating the Skins up? Salave'a has not been healthy this season and has not been the immovable object he was in '04 or '05. Golston has some nice quick little moves in pass rushing situations, but he's undersized and gets plowed on running plays. Put in a big ass DT, and all of a sudden you'll be praising Lemar Marshall again next year. He'll flow to the ball more freely. |

We don't need much tweaking of the scheme. It still works. We just need two or three players to solidify the weak links in the chain, and suddenly offensive coordinators won't have a place they can hone in on and attack. You can't blitz if you can't cover. And in this year's draft there are 3 DTs that can do that in the top 10. |

Golston has some nice quick little moves in pass rushing situations, but he's undersized and gets plowed on running plays. Put in a big ass DT, and all of a sudden you'll be praising Lemar Marshall again next year. He'll flow to the ball more freely.
Very good point. In order for Marshall to be effective he must have strong DT's. Heck he's only 225 as a MLB. But still I would look for someone a little bigger on run downs and use Marshall in nickel situations. We really need a more impact player at MLB on run downs. I would use Marshall as Monte Colemen type of player. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
You're telling me that Gregg Williams has deliberately held the reins on Carter and is not allowing him to go after the quarterback? So then, the plummet in defensive rankings is all by design?
One could defend Andre Carter by demanding that the secondary step it up and blanket everyone like they're supposed to. One could defend the secondary by demanding that the defensive line get the quarterback sooner. Neither positions are doing their job. I'm not buying into the notion that Williams is somehow holding Carter back in pass rushing situations. He only averaged 4.5 sacks a year in San Fransisco before being moved to linebacker. So his "mad pass rushing skills" apparently failed him there too, -- unless of course, the 49ers had exactly the same philosophy that Gregg Williams has. I find that difficult to believe. Andre Carter is yet another hideous miscalculation in scouting personnel by this front office.
Well put! Did anyone watch film on Carter before they signed him? WTF were they thinking? Good pass rushers are like gold. You just don't let them walk away if they are any good. So why does one of the worst defenses in the NFL let him walk? I just think Carter would be more effective if they used him on passing downs ONLY. He IS NOT an everydown 4-3 DE. He's just not big enough. |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
I also said DE, for a couple of reasons.
1 -- because DB's don't need to be world beaters if they don't have to keep coverage on a play for 5-10 seconds. 2 -- because of simple math and physics. Even a small disturbance at the origin of an object's trajectory can cause a huge change, whereas often even large disturbances at the end can still be compensated for. 3 -- because DB's don't help that much in run support, either.
Well stated. I've said it for 13 straight years. And thanks for the physics lesson. I never understood it before now! |

This may be off the wall, but I'd seriously consider moving Marcus to MLB. Play Rocky and LeMar on the outsides, sign Justin Smith as a DE, and trade down for multiple picks to draft a DT (Okam, Tyler?) and a CB (Bennett, Cason?) |
Re: Bill B Presents TMC's Pick the Position Poll
Exactly what would you tweak? I don't see how anyone can say a scheme needs tweaking unless they can describe exactly what needs to be done and why it will work.
William's scheme is still the same, he just can't deploy it. No scheme change needs to be made, he just needs players that can allow him to use his entire bag of tricks. He needs the players that allow him to bring the blitzy back.
I'm not smarter than Gregg Williams, so I don't know exactly what needs to be tweaked. But I do know that if you only have fifteen sacks to date, you need to switch something to compensate for weeknesses. It's just an observation, but I think it could be more than than an observation when teams are game planning for us. He needs the players to allow him to bring back the blitz? Typically, the players that are high on sack totals or are effective blitzers tend to be of the free-lance mold, or are very aggressive in their pursuit and Gregg Williams doesn't prefer that type of player. That guy doesn't fit this system. The one year where Springs had six sacks from the corner may never happen again. If it does, I'm all for it. |

The reason he's not blitzing has nothing to do with the DEs or the LBs he has on the roster. He's not blitzing because our secondary can't hold up without coverage help from the LB corps. He needs to drop the LBs into zones or we just get gashed through the air. |

By the way, I knew that's what you were basically saying about needing help in the secondary. |

Everything else follows if GW has confidence in our #1 covering their #1 one on one. |
