a redskin won't get to the hall until danny is no longer our owner. It is a bias agianst Danny and the whole team has to suffer. these same guys who say it is time for monk to get in on tv probrally sit in that room and vote agianst him when it is all said and done

Re: Art Monk Denied Admission to the HoF

Monk had no memorable catches? The most memorable thing about Michael Irvin catching the ball was that he most likely had just finished pushing off the DB.
I fear that Monk's chances at the Hall slip each year he is denied. I can see myself explaining to my son how great this guy was when Monk is in the "seniors" pool in 2025...

Re: Art Monk Denied Admission to the HoF

There has to be some serious, well thought out protest as to why Monk hasn't been elected.

Let's face it, the media has spoken out; From ESPN to Fox to the NFL Today on down to the local sports pundits. I've heard them all get about as angry as one can get on public television. I've heard non-Redskins such as Howie Long, Tom Jackson, Steve Young, to just about every former Skin and coach make their thoughts known and what a travesty this is. Now how is it that all of these people, non-football and tons of former players are wrong, and yet these 39 so called 'writers' are correct?

Art Monk was Jerry Rice before Jerry Rice was. Art Monk personified class back then, the way people oooh and ahhh over Marvin Harrison today. Every single year when he get's snubbed, it's as if it's a suprise, but yet it isn't. He's constantly at the top of the 'snubbed' lists.

Soooo...if the media gets it, and they've chimed in, the Skins from top to bottom have voiced their opinion, we're really the only ones left to take a firm stance on the issue. I don't know, guys. But what I do know is, if Monk gets elected to Canton next year or next week!, it still won't be the same to me - it just won't.

The Hall of Fame means nothing to me now. It's just a building, a hollow building filled with nothing more than football memorabilia, yet no real sense of respect for the game or the players that have made it great. They should really turn it into some type of "museum" or perhaps a 'throwback' football jersey store. I really mean that. There is no way one can rightfully justify calling it the pro football hall of fame, and not elect the players that have made the biggest statistical contribution and have epitomized professionlism.

It's funny because many of Monk's stats are in the hall, but he isn't. Frankly, I think Art has probably moved on at this point. He's said nothing, as well he shouldn't. But the fans have to say something, and not on these dumb ass polls that the same guys who do the voting control.

53) “There was never a classier player in this franchise’s history, or in league history, than Art Monk. You always knew the team would be getting Art Monk’s best effort day in and day out.” –Charlie Casserly
54) “Monk is headed to Canton downhill on roller skates”- Bill Parcells, 1995
55) Only one other player, linebacker Monte Coleman, has been on the field for the Redskins more than Monk.
56) Art Monk is almost as proud of his relative anonymity as he is the record-setting numbers he compiled over a 16-year NFL career.
57) When Monk spoke, it was usually with tough catches in the clutch moments of big games.
58) Nothing came naturally for Monk, who spent countless hours on the practice field and many more behind the projector.

67) Early in his career, Art arranged and scheduled charity basketball games for the Redskins.
68) “I can’t see how a receiver could be more valuable to a team.” –Gibbs
69) Fame is often hard earned. Character is often elusive to define. A man of great character himself, Art Monk encompasses what it means to be a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
70) Monk wasn’t a “SportsCenter” type of receiver — more like a “Masterpiece Theatre” type.
71) You wouldn’t see Monk pull out a Sharpie to sign a ball after scoring a touchdown.
72) “He embodied the old school, and for that alone he should be enshrined so that when a father takes his son through the Hall of Fame, he can say, “Son, here is a man who once caught 106 passes in a season when no one was catching 100 passes. Here was a man who caught a pass in 183 straight games. And not once did he ever pull a cell phone out to make a call after any of those catches.” –Thomas Loverro, Washington Times
73) Football is a game of first downs and Monk was the receiver who would move the chains.
74) He has since been passed in this pass-crazy era, but in the context of when he played, Art Monk was a Hall of Fame receiver.
75) He did this while never playing with a Hall of Fame-caliber quarterback.
76) Critics will say Monk benefited from playing in Joe Gibbs’ system. What might be the case is that the Gibbs system benefited from having Monk.
77) “I believe he’s a Hall of Famer. I was a pro scout when he was playing, so it was my job to know who those guys were. I would put Art in that category, but apparently there are a lot of Hall of Fame voters who don’t feel Art Monk was in that category. It’s hard for me to believe they ever saw him play.” –Bill Polian, President Indianapolis Colts
78) He was the anti-Terrell Owens.
79) He was the standard-bearer, the mold-maker and the receiver every team of his era wished they’d had.
80) He’s already a Hall Of Famer off the field.
81) It’s time.
You know what is absolute proof that the Hall voting is horseshit?

Stallworth and Swann are Hall of Famers. The fact that those two are in and Monk isn't shows that the Hall of Fame has zero credibility.

catches - yards - TDs - Pro-bowls - Championships
Monk 940- 12721 - 68 - 3 - 3
Stallworth 537 - 8723 - 63 - 3 4
Swann 336 - 5462 - 51 - 3 - 4

Just for a frame of reference....
Clark 699 - 10856 - 68 - 4 - 2

and last but not least.... Every prostitute's favorite family man.... The Captain of Crack/Cocaine. Michael Irvin

Irvin 750 - 11904 - 65 - 5 - 3

Monk even beats Captain Crackpipe in every category except Pro-bowls (another beauty contest).

The Hall of Fame 90% popularity and 10% production.

Hall of Fame voters can go f*ck themselves if you ask me. In reality, the award means nothing.
i am the opposite of this. i think players should be judged solely on the ability to play whatever sport they are talented in. but going strictly by stats alone, how is monk not in?
Going strictly by stats alone, there is no excuse. How the person plays the game can be interpreted in several different ways. Both WRs helped their team to win 3 Super Bowl championships, so Irvins has no edge there. As far as making spectacular catches, well, that is a matter of opinion. No matter how one will try to argue against Monk, there are just as many reasons...actually twice as many reasons for Monk to be in the HoF. It comes down to the fact that Michael Irvins is keeping himself fresh in the media's mind by being a football analyst. If Monk had done the samething, he would have been in the Hall much sooner. It's really all about hall of fame voting being a big fat joke. If you give the media what they want, they will return the favor. If you fall off the face of the earth after your career, you are forgotten. It is just as simple as that. That is why I say those who vote players in should take the player as a person in as high of regards, as the guy being the football player. As much as I loved Manley's aggression on the field, I would not support him being in the HoF with the way he led is life off the field. The same could be said for the original L.T. I believe truly great players are those who were great players on the field, and great people off the field. Those are the guys I'd want my kids looking up to.

What's the big deal? We all knew the Hall had no credibility anyways. Who the hell cares if some dumbass sports writers think he isn't one of the greats? A person's character and worth is not determined by the perception of others.

If I were Monk, I'd ask to have my name removed from all future ballots. I'd boycott. Also, if I were a player in the Hall, I'd ask to have my bust removed until Monk was inducted. Remember the movie "Rudy", were all the players asked the coach to let Rudy play for them? Something like that.

DG - as much as I would want that to happen I think Monk will not go in due to the vote being decided by a bunch of idiots. I saw that Dr. Z basically said Monks chances will now diminsh because todays WR's numbers are getting bigger and bigger and that would in turn make Monks numbers not as good - these guys are crazy if you ask me.

Also I saw that Cris Carter will be in the ballot next year and will get the nod over Monk as well. To me to have one Redskin player (Riggo) in the HOF is about as dumb minded as it gets - how do these guys get the jobs they are in is beyond me.

I've always said I'd make the trek if/when Art was inducted. In fact, I think ever fan whose ever cheered him should -- and by that calculation, it should be at least 55k (counting RFK numbers).

Also, not one Hog in the HOF - how can that be? I guess the voters excuse on that one is the Hogs did not have a "signature block".

The latest from Peter King, not sounding good for our boy Arthur Monk.

"A good man and legitimate Hall of Famer is being denied entry for reasons we never know, by people who secretly vote. Art Monk is a Hall of Famer by any measure. This is not right."
-- Washington owner Dan Snyder.

Dan, not a bad point. As one of the 40 Hall selectors, I'd love to see Hall voting be opened up so we would be accountable in such an important election for how we stand. But what happened to Monk, in my opinion, is mostly bad. Good for Monk: The major roadblock in front of him, Michael Irvin, is no longer a roadblock; he's in. Bad for Monk: Next year comes Cris Carter, with 161 more catches, five more Pro Bowls and 62 more touchdowns in the same number of seasons. Then Tim Brown, with 154 more catches, and the stat race is on. Every year, Monk will fall farther behind in the numbers game. As someone who changed his mind on Monk and strongly advocated him this year (unquestioned leader on a three-time Super Bowl champ, superb downfield blocker, retired as the all-time receptions leader, never squawked for the ball with some other me guys in the locker room), I think it's going to be tough to get him in if he hasn't gotten in by now.

Isn't it a little coincidental that right when he decides Monk is worthy of HOF consideration a new crop of receivers with better stats will be eligible? I think he doesn't want to receive any more heat for being regarded as a major opponent of his selection for the past number of years. Shefter explained that certain members hold sway over many other members and for years we have heard that PK is one of those people. Also, just because he says that he "changed his mind", and has "advocated" for Monk doesn't mean that he actually voted for him. The writers can only vote for a limited number of players each year.

I'm not sure why comparing Monk to guys like Carter or Brown is really fair anyway. These guys played in a different era than Monk. When Carter and Brown were both racking up the catches it came in a time when the NFL was definitely much more pass oriented.

You are correct, the player has to be compared with records and play that occurred in his time. Monk retired as the all time leading reciever in number of catches. It makes no difference what that mark is today. He is still in the top 6 or 8 top recievers of all time. Makes NO sense. I can understand trying to F... a creep like TO. Monk's a great guy.
Stink has been very outspoken in his support for Monk.

I heard it. Cowherd says he doesn't belong because Monk was just a "compiler". He mentioned that out of 7 big games, Super Bowls and NFC Championships, Monk only caught one touchdown. He said that being "dependable" on countless 6-yard curl patterns aren't enough to get you the label of playmaker, and it's not worthy of the Hall of Fame. He says it's not the Hall of Nice Guys, Hall of "dependable", or Hall of Longetivity. He maintains that Monk was really good, just not great. He did say he'll probably get in someday.

Wingo and Schlereth said that Monk should be recognized because he compiled the records on a run first team. Also that it shouldn't be overstated that Monk didn't have Hall of Fame QBs throwing the ball to him. They said that his modest TD numbers should be discounted because the NFL was different then compared with the Marvin Harrisons and Chris Carter days of pass happy offenses. Schlereth really drove home the point that when he retired, he was the leading receiver in NFL HISTORY.

I like Cowherd, but he strikes me as the type of talk show host who will say anything to get his audience fired up -- but he probably doesn't believe half of what he says.

Re: Art Monk Denied Admission to the HoF

Calling Monk a compiler is as silly as calling Emmit Smith a compiler! Emmit is the all time leading rusher, but I personally consider Jim Brown the greatest back to ever play the game.

What a bunch of sackless choads! I quess Monk didn't shake his as@#$%^ enough, or get caught with a HALL OF SHAME Amount of drugs and prostitutes.

Why doesn't character matter in the Hall of Shame(which i will refer to as for the rest of my life)?

Re: Art Monk Denied Admission to the HoF

My brother composed this:

Single-Season Reception Leaders in the 1980's:

1980: Winslow, 89, TE
1981: Winslow, 88, TE
1982: D. Clark, 60, TE
1983: Christensen, 92, TE
1984: Monk, 106, WR
1985: Craig, 92, RB
1986: Christensen, 95, TE
1987: Smith, 91, WR
1988: Toon, 93, WR
1989: Sharpe, 90, WR

Largent (HOF) doesn't appear on this list.

Lofton (HOF) doesn't appear on this list.

Rice (HOF) doesn't appear on this list.

Since 1990, only one non-WR (Gonzalez in 2004) has led the NFL in receptions. That's ONE compared to SIX from 1980-1989—SIX in a span of TEN years.

Folks, if that doesn't indicate a shift from a run-oriented league to a pass-oriented league, then I don't know what else to say.

Also, if you look at the receptions leaderboard, you will notice a definite trend after 1990 of rising catches. In fact, only once since 1990 has the number dipped below 100. Um, only ONCE in the 80’s did the number exceed 100.

Is this a coincidence, or a sign that the league has evolved into a more pass happy league?:

More to chew on...

# of 1,000 seasons

1) Lofton: 5

2) Largent: 4

2) Monk: 4

2) Rice: 4

# of receptions (first number starting with 1980, OR player's first year in the 80's;last number ending with 1989 OR player's last year in the 80's):

1) Rice: 86, 65, 64, 82 / average=74.25

2) Monk: 56, 35, 47, 106, 91, 73, 38, 72, 86 / average=67

3) Largent: 66, 75, 34, 72, 74, 79, 70, 58, 39, 28 / average=59.50

4) Lofton: 71, 71, 35, 58, 62, 69, 64, 41, 28 / average=55.44

# of TD's (first number starting with 1980, OR player's first year in the 80's;last number ending with 1989 OR player's last year in the 80's):

1) Rice: 3, 5, 22, 19, 17, 13 / average=13.16 (note: insane TD production by Rice, who--IMO--along with Jim Brown, is the greatest football player EVER. Just absurd)

2) Largent: 6, 9, 3, 11, 12, 6, 9, 8, 2, 3 / average=6.9

3) Lofton: 4, 8, 4, 8, 7, 4, 4, 5, 0, 3 / average=4.7

3) Monk: 3, 6, 1, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 5, 8 / average: 4.7

Average YPC's in 80's:

1) Lofton: 19.15

2) Rice: 17.88

3) Largent: 15.57

4) Monk: 13.9

There is no doubt that Monk was a possession WR, just like there is no doubt from looking at these stats that James Lofton was a deep threat, that Largent was the most “all-around,” and that Rice was the best of the bunch and the best ever.

More importantly, what all of these stats indicate, aside from Rice's insane TD production, is how different the WR position is today than it was in the 1980's.

Stats are relative and should not be analyzed in a vacuum. To quote Brad Oremland, “Monk's 106 catches were in 1984 what Harrison's 143 were last season [2002]” (Buzzle Web Portal: Intelligent Life on the Web)

Therefore, it is absolute insanity to compare Monk's stats “directly” to players like Chris Carter and Tim Brown.
PK isn't soley responsible, but to think that his opinions don't carry alot of weight with HOF voters is pretty silly.
There's no question Peter King carries a lot of weight ... ha ha.

But seriously, if he's that influential, then Monk should have gotten in this year because King now supports his entry.
