When Jay Schroeder was third string (or maybe 4th, I was 10 or 11) he was jogging by my school one Saturday while a group of us were playing football. He asked if he could QB for us and none of us realized who it was. Until he told a friend of mine to "go deep". Deep for a 10 year old is much different than for a budding NFL QB. I don't know how far he threw it but it seemed like a mile to us. I know Schroeder got a bad rep here but it was so cool having him throw it around with a bunch of kids. I still didn't believe him when he said that he'd be playing for the Skins(most of us had Skins shirts on). But later I saw him on TV and recognized him. It's the only time I got bruises from just catching balls.
Second coolest:
I was in a bar in Centreville at 11 am one Tuesday in December right after I turned 21. My buddies and I were drinking and arguing football. In my altered state of mind I was arguing that Riggo was better than any back in the league at the time (1995). John Riggins overheard us and told my friends that he agreed with me and bought me a beer. Then he shot the breeze with us for a little bit until the guy he was waiting for got there and the two went into the restaurant area.
Funniest:
Georgetown Leather in the mid-80's. My father (not a football fan) bumped into a rather large man and dropped his bag. The man apologized even though it was my father's fault and picked up the bag for him. My father was pretty rude to him and once outside I told him, "Dad, that was Dexter Manley."
"The guy who knocked out the Cowboys QB? Damn, probably should've been nicer, huh?"

Ken Harvey was very cool to talk too, super nice guy. Gary Clark and Ricky Sanders were fun. Brian Mitchell was hilarous. Darrell Green was nice. As a matter of fact all of them were nice. Patrick Ramsey, Fred Smoot, Chris Cooley, Randy Thomas, Joe Gibbs, Chris Samuels, Ray Brown, Mark Mosley, Don Warren, Pat Fischer was awesome, I know Im missing a few, but Id have to say the coolest was Portis. I was leaving training camp last year and stopped to get gas at a place not far from camp. I walk in and theirs Portis in the candy isle with a pack of twinkies in one hand and a box of condoms in the other! It was a funny sight. We started talking while in line and all the way out to his truck, just a super cool guy. I ask him to autograph my hat, he says sure, as hes getting in his truck so I hand him the hat and look in the passenger side and their is Santana Moss. He was pretty quite, but nice. Met Portis their after another practice, chatted again and he took a great pic with my son. I used to see Bruce Smith out at alot of bars down in Va Bch before he was a Redskin, by most accounts a real prick. Oh yeah, Ladell Betts and Mike Sellers were awesome as well. Sellers is a big dude! His chest is as big from front to back as it is from side to side, seriously!

After talking w/ my mom about this one she reminded me of perhaps the coolest. After retiring from football, Virgil Seay was a teacher's assistant for special students at the elementary school I went to (and my mom worked at). Didn't realize it at the time, but definately a class act.

I got to meet Phil Mickelson at this past year's AT&T National at Congressional Country Club in Bethesda. I talked to him briefly about the Skins, he said he was a fan of our new young QB. Very cool, surreal, moment for me, one I'll never forget. As far as for actually Skins players I got to stand about 5 feet away from Antwaan Randle El, he's shorter than I thought he would be.

Marcus Washington.. I met him in Panama City out at a bar and he was the nicest person. Opened up a bar tab and told stories about how this was our year. Unfortunatly things aren't looking that way

Even after meeting all these players I have had the chance to correspond through the mail with some.. After a couple attempts to get Gene Pepper (1950-1953) to sign my 52 throwback mini helmet. I wrote him and asked for permission to send it. He said no problem he would be happy to sign it.. Anyway after sending it to him and getting it back I told him i would love to hear some of the stories from the old days. I enclosed my number and asked him to call even he was ever bored.. well weeks had passed after receiving my helmet back signed.. I came home from work one night and my wife said a Gene Pepper had called. She not knowing who he was just thought it was someone from work. He left his number and I got up the nerve to call. We had a great conversation for about 15 minutes telling me of the old days playing with Sammy Baugh and Eddie Lebaron. told me what it was like playing for Curly Lambeau. It was a great experience hearing some of the stories..

A class guy for doing that.

It was great for getting in and out :) there was hardly anyone there. I felt bad for the school trying to raise money. I told the guy he needed to do a better job of advertising.

I have met a lot of Skins over the years, and have probably forgotten that I met some. When I was 5 my family got to go bowling with George Allen, I still have a b/w framed picture of him helping me hold up a bowling ball. The early 70's garb that everyone was in is actually quite comical.

My mother worked for awhile with Pat Fischer and I met him several times, he was awfully cool and told great stories that I thought were predominantly fabricated until I met his Nebraska and Redskin teamate Ron McDole, who is extremely nice and corroborrated all the sories Pat Fischer told me. I even hired McDole to build 2 custom bars for me, he does excellent work.

I think the coolest Redskin I have met though was Irving Fryar, although he was an Eagle when I met him. I was working at a summer camp near Philadelphia years ago and took a group of kids to Eagles training camp for the day, After practice just about every player blew out of there quickly, but Fryar stopped and signed autographs for every single person who wanted one, and spent about 15 minutes after that talking to me and the kids that I brought to camp. I thought that was very nice of him.

I helped as a recruiting coordinator for the Maryland Football team so i got the chance to meet a bunch of athletes and a lot of cool ones, here are some:

Sean Taylor - not just saying this in light of his passing but he was just really unassuming from the few times I met him

Shawn Springs - we went to the same high school (Go Devils) and had the same mentor Mrs. Amatucci NFL Teacher of the Year 2000; big heart

The now Redskin, then Terp: Stephon Heyer - Definitely a regular ol' guy with no ego

Shawne Merriman - that guy is just funny and the life of the party

Steve Francis - Typical Prankster/joker (he and Obinna Ekeze rented one of my family's properties when they went to College Park)

Marcus Washington - Through a friend; he is probably the coolest pro athlete I have ever met. Invited us to a party in DC without barely even knowing him.


NOT COOL

John Riggins - that guy is as mean in real life as he played on the football field, i still respect him but i would not want to sit down and have a beer with that guy

Sonny, regular Joe. Sitting by himself at an outdoor cafe, and I walked by him. I talked to him for a few minutes (after I got my voice back). He at least gave the illusion of being interested.

Unfortunately, I've only met one NFL player that I recall and that was Jeff Bostic. Being an old school 'Skins fan, I was stoked when I first met him in Annapolis, MD back when he was still playing. More recently (two years ago), I again ran into him with my wife and two boys (all of whom are huge Redskin fans) at of all places, our church here in suburban Atlanta. Both times I met with Bostic, he was aloof and totally disinterested. I never approach celebrities if seen in public as I respect their privacy. But seeing Bostic was irresistable given our loyalty to the 'Skins, but we didn't interrupt his dinner or conversations with other people. He was basically a dick and just looked at my family as if we were hitting him up for money or something. We didn't even ask for an autograph, we just wanted to say hello and that we were big Redskin fans and had watched him pancake D-lineman for many years. Our boys were bummed that he wasn't very friendly and I lost a little respect for him because of his smugness. However, when my wife worked in Bethesda for a company that contracted with the Redskins back in the "salad" days (mid to late 80's), she met many players and coaches and never encountered one that wasn't nice or friendly. Pettibone, Monk, Mann, Butz, and later on Earnest Byner, all were class acts and many times initiated conversations with my wife and her co-workers. Those were the days I guess.

I was last in line for Coach Byner this past Spring, he signed my card, posed for a picture and answered my question about coming two yards shy of being the first Redskin to have three consecutive 100 yard seasons. He is every bit as nice as people describe.

Taking a distant second is Mark Rypien. He takes the time to talk and makes sure you see his Super Bowl ring.

Charles Mann is great with fans as is Joe Thiesman and Joe Jacoby.

When my father was working for Princess Jewlers is Vienna, VA ( LOTS of former/current player shop there) I met a few 'skins Sam Shade, Joe Jacoby, Darrell Green (who is the only skin i was dissapointed with, He really was my fav. growing up, but was kind of a a-hole when every time I met him) Brian Mitchell is by far the coolest player i have ever met period. He probably sat there talking with me and my Dad for close to an hour, about football, life, the way he approached the game. The guy has a great sense of humor! One time i was there and Brian was there talking with my dad and I (late in the first season he was in philly) and Darrell Green came in (skins had already been mathimatically eliminated from the post season by then) After talking for a few minutes BM told DG "I know how you can make it to playoffs" DG replied "Really? Hows that? We are already out" and BM told him "Ill save you a seat in my box" and cracked up... One of the best memories I have.

As for the worst I met Mike Tice back when he played for Minn. I was like 5 and he was a total d-bag to me and my dad.. he was the first pro i had ever seen in person and he was really shitty to us.

I recently met DG at an opening of Circuit City and got a photo with him and my kids. That was cool. My rents met Theisman at the Kennedy Center. Not sure how that happened. Wouldn't be the first place I'd figure he'd spend an evening. My topper, however, is I just met President Bush at the White House this past Monday. Very, Very cool experience. Kinda bummed that he kissed my wife, a native Texan, but not me. Oh well...Guess the First Lady might not have approved (loud coughing sound). Be well or well...just be.

The only player I've ever met is Fred Smoot. It was at the draft day party in 04. The year we drafted ST. He sat at our table for about 20 minutes near the radio booth talking to us about Taylor and signing a few things for me and my father.

I moved to charlotte a few year ago and have met a few of the stars from around here. I met Stephen Davis a couple years back while he was playing here with the Panthers (i believe he actually was injured that year or something) but anyway he was a real cool guy. He sat down and chatted, talked to my son, who was like 2 at the time, real nice guy. I met Moose Muhammed right before he signed with Chicago, nice guy, signed an autograph for my son. let me just tell you, dude is big. his hand wrapped around mine twice. I also met Bernie Bickerstaff in Panera. He was funny as hell. It was right when the Bobcats drafted Phelton and May and he was busting on them saying they needed to get their asses in shape and in camp.

for me i,ve seen many of the old guys like theismann at a car dealership here in greenville after he broke his leg ,got his autograph.and another charity deal at a school i think it was in williamston gym where there was quite a few reskins there playin in a charity basketball game ,ravin caldwell,alvin walton ,todd bowles,kurt goveia (sp) and a few others where i had my superbowl xxii hat autograprahed all over it that was a great deal escpecially watching kurt eat a hotdog during the game on the bench.but what i cherish the most is in 1993 after my heart was broken due to his retirement i was able to go to charlotte and meet and talk with joe gibbs in the trailer at then charlotte motor speedway and signed a few things for me too.all i can say is he is one humble religious man to say the least and he,s very soft spoken.
that day i cherish the most and i remember it like it was yesterday.....

In 1990, I met Mark Rypien on Easter Sunday in Annapolis. I've never been an autograph guy, but I like to go up to players, tell them that I appreciate what they do, and wish them luck for the upcoming game or season. Rypien was with his wife and infant, yet he still chatted with me for a couple minutes just after the service - just a genuinely nice guy. A very big guy for a QB too - he looked to be about 6'4" and a solid 235-240 lbs.

I've met several, but here are my favorites...When Sam Huff was playing for the Redskins, I was shopping in a grocery store and I saw Sam in the checkout line. I waved and said (like an idiot), "Hey, Sam...I went to WVU, too!" I was too excited to think of anything else to say. He smiled and answered in a very friendly tone. Of course I don't remember what he said because I was too thrilled to have met him.

Then several years ago when Joe Jacoby was playing, I had my wife and kids out at Cox's Farm. It's a place where you take your kids to get a taste of farm life, to feed the animals, and to buy pumpkins, jellies, pies, etc. Joe Jacoby had his family there, too, and no one was pestering them...except me. I went up to him and told him how much I loved the Redskins, and how well I thought they were playing. He thanked me, and I left before I made a bigger pest out of myself. But I was thrilled to have this brief encounter with a great player.

Gary Clark and Mike Nelms...When we asked Mike if we could see his SB ring (we wanted to see it on his hand), he pulled it off and allowed us to hold it and if we wanted put it on. Sounds goofy, but growing up admiring these guys, that was a big deal for a thirty year old.

I met Jim Lachey in the summer of 91 at football camp. spoke to him for about an hour about working out, and the NFC East d-linemen. Awesome guy, very down to earth. I remember I thought it was crazy, but he didn't squat more than 225 lbs. He prefered leg-presses, lunges, and cleans.

Back in the 80s, my Dad was the Parts and Service Director at BMW of Fairfax. Every once in a while, he'd come home with autographs (Ken Houston, Curtis Jordan, Jeff Bostic, Darrell Green to name a few). Somehow, Darryl Grant was involved with the company that owned the dealership, and came to the Company Picnic one year. Nice as could be. Let my Mom try on his Super Bowl XXII ring. Those things up close and personal are unreal. The only other football run-in I've had was watching Chris Cooley play softball. He doesn't look that big, but he can motor.

My Dad has since worked at Lexus of Rockville, and now is at Manhattan Jaguar, Lincoln/Mercury, Land Rover. When I was in high school, I worked for him at the Lexus dealership for a few months washing cars on Saturday mornings, and got to see Michael Westbrook's ride (Lexus LX450; which had something like 10 car batteries in the trunk to power all the equipment he had), as well as Rip Hamilton's ride (I want to say it was a Toyota Land Cruiser, but I can't remember). A while after I stopped washing cars, one of his employees got her nephew to come in every once in a while...Terrance Morris (former Terp star). He's also had dealings with Patrick Ewing, Steve Francis, and a few other sport stars. Not sure who frequents the Manhattan dealership these days...I'll have to ask him.
