Re: Game Coverage Sucks
Aren't you amazed, though, that they dropped Joey T and yet managed to talk even more? I think Joe served the purpose of keeping the other guys from talking and that was a GOOD thing.
I didn't hear them say that the Eagle fans booed Santa Clause. Did I miss it? I loved the video clip of Campbell's eyes though. That was gold. |
Re: Game Coverage Sucks
Without question the worst coverage I've ever been exposed to.
I know I'm just repeating what has already been said, but they had too much Barkely, too much Reid, and too much Philly this and Philly that. The whole Donovan desrves better campaign was sickening! Then they jumped to Belichick and cheating! Really, who cares? Balance, guys, balance!! They never talked up or barely acknowledged, for that matter, how well the Redskins were playing defensively. And if they were going to delve into Reid's personal life, they could have easily brought up Gibbs' grandson who has been ill too. Or some of the fresh blood the Skins added during the off season. Also, why must I suffer through a pre-game video of how bad ass Brian Dawkins is and his comic book selection, but nothing about Sean Taylor or Landry? Taylor laid some wood last night, and they pan the camera to Barkley's fat ass! I was as pissed as one could get! A total, complete, and utter fiasco. As a Redskins fan, I felt down right disrespected by the crap they pulled last night.
As to the pre-game material, the only thing I saw was a story on Gibbs' return and how much his team has sucked since he's been back. I suppose the only thing we can chalk this up to was it was a Philly home game, and it might have been different coverage if the Skins were at home. Or maybe I'm really grasping at straws here. |
Re: Game Coverage Sucks
Also, did anyone see the intro to the game with McNabb standing still and pushing off about 10 Redskins with stiffarms and then throwing the ball...all while whining about how much he wants to play good?
That was ridiculous. After it was over I was just staring at the TV saying, "WHAT WAS THAT?"
I totally forgot about that one! Utterly ridiculous! I could go on and on about that one. The thing is, the NFL is looking for another darling to smear across the screen other than Peyton Manning every five minutes. So what does ESPN do, have McNabb throw off the entire Redskins defense in some pitiful skit. How ironic was it that they chased his ass across the stadium all night. |

Worst coverage I've ever seen. Totally disrespected the Redskins, too. ESPN should be ashamed of themselves! Why the hell is Charles Barkley, a washed-up BASKETBALL player, commenting on a FOOTBALL game, anyway?

I didn't hear them say that the Eagle fans booed Santa Clause. Did I miss it? I loved the video clip of Campbell's eyes though. That was gold.
There were some really good production elements in the show... THe Campbell eyes package was EMMY award winning type stuff. That was the big criticism about Campbell up to this point and that was really spot on how they covered his progression. I also liked the McNabb package showing 6 plays where he missed open recievers. Really told the story of the game. I agree the booth was shown way too much and as a die-hard skins fan I felt a disconnect to what was going on the field at some points. When Landry totally whiffed on Westbrook I wanted a mention of that how he just was introduced to the NFL and I wanted a replay of Taylor's huge hit. The fumble that was overturned was bizarre... I'm watching and seeing the ball move and start to come out and everyone else refs included saw something else, it was like the twlight zone. Only thing i could think of is the ball came loose and he regained control and touched his knee down, wouldn't know however becasue they were talking about other shizz. Also the tease right before kick was excellent, no other network can match that piece hands down. Guarantee all the other networks are scratcning their heads trying to think of ways to produce that type of element ... Even though i didn't like seeing McNabb avoid skins, he's done so in 8 of the last 11 games so it's the story. He was one of the biggest, if not the biggest star in the game. Barkley is a personality like Howard Stern, people really love him and will watch or people really hate and will watch to see what he'll say next, liked him in their but was in for too long I agree. |
I dont know about you, but i am watching the game on ESPN. Kornheiser, Jaws, Charles Barkley, and this other douchbag are covering the game and it has been the worst coverage i have ever seen. They arent even talking about football. In the first half when sean taylor laid a hit on one phillie reciever to jar the ball lose to force a fourth down, they didnt even acknowledge it. they were to busy talking about andy reids personal life ( which was the topic of the whole game for the next 10 minutes). You know what, i dont care how bad you think theismann is, or how arrogant he is, but he did the most important thing that you had to do in announcing. HE TALKED ABOUT FOOTBALL! THESE GUYS FUC*ING SUCK! I mean for one leave reids personal life out of monday night football just for his privacy, but i mean gaddamnit talk about the game. I mean im not even sure if they knew the score half of the time. they were talkin about stupid shit, like the philly mascot and stuff. But what pisses me off the most is that Barkley keeps preachin how Andy Reid and Mcnabb arent getting any credit....i think thats a load of horse shit. IF ANYONE ISNT GETTING ANY CREDIT ITS THE SKINS! They made a mistake in releasing Theismann. Hey but the Skins D is kicking ass so its all good :)
It was horrible to the point I want to call espn and cuss them out. |
Re: Game Coverage Sucks
ya'll pretty much said everything . . .
the mcnabb commercial where he was tossing current identifiable skins D players around like the scene with Neo and a zillion agents in Matrix 2 was f'in ridick-ulus not playing ST and some other replays b/c they were jabbering on about philly fans and andy reids personal family problems was complete BS (much like espn making a big deal out of the noose before the terps national game) having the whole nation plus all-but-one so called "expert" picking the eagles to win, thanks tom jackson . . BUT THAT TONY K INTRO WAS NICE . . . let the whole nation know how we feel about Saint Joe . . . if they didnt know already! side note - swami, parcells and others looked real stupid in my mind even though they were trying to defend joe gibbs by saying he inherited a team w/ salary cap hell and not "joe gibbs" type players by saying now they finally have 2 running backs who fit his system and and an O-line to run behind . . . well we've had portis, betts and the dirtbags when gibbs got here so it wasnt a matter of getting the right players but a matter of getting the right plays called and having a QB who can throw the ball more than 15 yards. |

Personally, I thought the old Sunday night crew of Mike Patrick, Paul McGuire and Joe Thiesmann was fine.
Yes we do of course. For one thing, there are much fewer entertainment guests this season. We also know that most “hardcore fans” think that MNF is something that belongs to them, and ESPN just happens to be airing it. And no matter what, people will always complain. They also always come back. The idea behind having non-football guests on is to create a bigger feel for the night, and draw in the casual fan. Also, it allows Disney to cross-promote across its different properties. They have this huge platform with millions of people tuned in each week so why not take advantage of it? This is a business after all. The problem, of course, is a poor job is done of promoting the game and the guests that will be on leading up to Monday night. So come game time, most of the casual fans you’re trying to retain aren’t even watching in the first place. There’s also a misconception that only ESPN does this, but MNF on ABC back in the 1970s had people like Ronald Reagan, John Lennon and even some Muppets in the booth. A few years ago during the Red Sox vs. Cardinals World Series (If I remember right), Budweiser bought advertising time on FOX and during the game Chris Myers would conduct “interviews” with that dude Leon. During NBA games, TNT will go into the stands and Chris Sager will chat with actors who may have movies or shows coming up. |
Re: Game Coverage Sucks
When the Redskins win a road division game, the coverage bothers me a lot less. I think that it would help if the director would have an iron clad rule to show the entire play. Last night there was a couple of times where they cut away from the booth just after the snap which really sends the message to the viewer that they are watching a male version of The View and that the game will be shown if it's convenient. I think that's the wrong approach, but like I said, as long as we win.

Everyone except Tom Jackson picked the Eagles. A lot of eggs on the face at ESPN tonight. :)
I was glad to see Tom do that, but I kind of thought, "I guess he drew the short straw." Another postive is Parcells. He referred to the Eagles as the Philadelphia Palantonios which I found funny for some reason. His banter with Keyshawn is enjoyable too. You can tell it eats him up to have a player giving his opinion about something on an equal basis. Like watching Bobby Knight listen patiently in the huddle as one of his players tells everone what he thinks they should do. More Parcells please. |

I really don't have a problem with someone dropping in the booth for a quick visit, and I do like Barkley, but I just felt he was in there too long and it was like the game took a backseat while he was there.

i think the announcers do a great job calling the game.what i see is that all the announcers including the world's two biggest jerry jones asskissers in history, emmitt smith, tuna parcells have to say against the redskins.parcells was a great coach, and smith was a great rb,but when it comes to being analysists, they both stink.BTW,steve young ai'nt far behind either!

To be honest, I was some what excited when he said he'd be there because he's hysterical on TNT. But then he wouldn't leave, and it dragged on, forever, and ever, and ever... There was no reason for him to be there the entire 3rd quarter. |

Re: Game Coverage Sucks
This was the first time I have ranted and complained about MNF coverage this was so so bad, Why do these commentators feel they have to put their two cents in on national television after talking about it all week to their listeners. Tricio missed so many play by play calls it was ridiculous and even when they got a call the booth idiots continued talking like it was still halftime. The sideline commentators Suzy and Michelle had to have felt so disjointed from the booth I mean you cut to them for injury update when the booth is talking about Andy Crack kids and Philly's Booing Fans !
I'm glad a found somewhere to vent my frustration over this MNF coverage. |
Re: Game Coverage Sucks
ESPN should not be allowed to acknowledge football. I cannot stand their coverage, their "expert analysis" and their freaking arrogance about being the center of the sports world.....another sports network needs to step the F*** up.

Re: Game Coverage Sucks
It was not only the skins fans who were ticked about what went on durn the third quarter the two philly fans I asked said they got ticked off as well and just wanted to see the game. Does anyone have a link to ESPN where we could send emails about how poor of a job they did. I'm not commenting on wether they did a good job but more so how they rambled through the whole 1/3 quarter. Evertime it seemed they were done someone would ask Charles another dumb question. If they just had him pop up for a few minutes and did not skip around the game it would have not been that bad. I remember one of the guys after enough time had gone by i knew something was going on said "Oh, by the way the skins took a time out" and then went right back talking.

I've already shared all your complaints along with the other thousands (literally) of emails we have to review for all sports. But as I've said: -Compared to other networks and the grand history of Monday Night Football, ESPN isn't doing things dramatically different. (that said a lot has changed from last year to this year) -MNF is part of a bigger business strategy, not just a football game ESPN slaps on every Monday -No matter what, people will always complain (and yes, CB was on longer than planned. Why, I don't know) |

Re: Game Coverage Sucks
I'm talking about the concept of having guests (not always sports related) on during Monday Night Football. That's been going on for years across the televised sports spectrum.
Plus, as I mentioned in a private message to an esteemed Warpath colleague of mine, keep in mind that NBC (for example) only has the game and pregame to expose their coverage of football to all fans (hardcore and casual), whereas on ESPN we have NFL Live, SportsCenter, NFL Match Up, Countdown, and so on, plus the game itself. So whereas we'll get really technical during one show, we'll do more of a treetop analysis on another. It's not about being a work-homer. Believe me, there is plenty to legitimately complain about. None of us on this side of the fence are ignorant to that. It's about presenting a different perspective and explanation that I'm able to offer. |
