I dont understand why it feels like I close friend when I don't even know you, maybe it is becuase I spent the last few years listening to you speak to me through your play. I thank you for being a true redskin. I thank you for inspiring and giving hope to me, to us. The big comback in big D where his hit jarred the ball lose and gave old man brunell one more shot to pull it off. Invaluable loss of a unique talent and person you will be sorely missed and never be replaced. You fought to hang on for us, your baby girl, your fiance, but not even your strength, your perserverance could pull you through, god must have bigger plans for you then the redskins ever did. A very misunderstood individual because of his desire to shun the spot light, could have been the greatest safety to ever play the game, there was never a safety who was able to do it all as well as him, IMO not even Lott, who I feel was the best of all time. I will never forget that hit on Patrick Crayton on Monday night sending the ball flying the opposite direction 15 yards. Maybe the best way to describe Sean was imperfect, but special! There was something special about him for so many people including myself to feel as if they lost someone close to them in an individual most of us never met.

If it were another player on the Redskins, would the reaction be the same? Would there be this visceral, nauseating feeling in so many of our guts?
Is it because he was already a tragic figure that we rooted for him that much more?
Or, if there were no 18 month old daughter, would we shrug our shoulders and write it off in the same way we do every other murder victim, in order to wake up in the morning and go about our daily lives?
Or, was there something more there for us? By ‘us,’ I mean the fans of the storied Redskins organization and the meaning it has brought to our lives over the years.
I’ve been struggling with why I feel so angry, helpless, and in a strange way, special.
Maybe it’s because I live on the West coast now, and coverage of my teams entail (“Breaking News: Gilbert Arenas out for 3 Months) on the ESPN scroll… then (Breaking News: Redskins Sean Taylor in critical condition after shooting), then, well, I don’t need to say more. (by the way, when does a “shooting” become a murder?

I know that many of our identities are somewhat constituted on being a ‘Skins fan. I’m curious, though, being in 49er land, among a fan base that has experienced the greatest highs, followed by major expectations, only to be met by major disappointments (sound familiar?) if having such a devotion to a team makes me feel as if I have some true connection, if not ownership of the wins, the losses, the owners, and coaches, and especially, the guys dressed in burgundy and gold who play the game. A few years ago I vowed never to buy another jersey again (with the exception of Riggo, Darrell, Sonny, Sam, etc, but you get the idea) because the names on the jersey’s I owned eventually played for other teams.
I never felt that way about Sean. I guess I didn’t know how to feel about the guy other than I loved the way he played. He was old school. Ask Butkus if anything that Sean did in the past few years would have garnered a fine when he played. Ask anyone if Sean intentionally tried to put the “prince” or quarterback out of the game. He built a reputation with the NFL by missing a rookie symposium. He probably got fined more because of his reputation than his actions. He did spit in the dude’s face. He did that in a game that he scored a touchdown – a strange paradox. He had some growing to do. Any man over the age of 30 reading this right now, just assimilate your own experience. Did you do some stupid things at that age? If you were being monitored by 30 cameras and a group of referees, would you have been found innocent? Do you hold yourself to the same standard you do professional athletes, including Sean Taylor? Please. It’s so easy for all of us to judge. In fact, that judgment is what allows us to make sense of tragedy. …Sean Taylor was all caught up with the thug life….blah, blah, blah,….why the hell are so many people, who have never met the guy, much less heard him speak, lining up to light a candle and try to make sense of it?
This isn’t about the NFL exactly, although the NFL has certainly capitalized on it.
We (some of us) choose to identify ourselves and ally ourselves based on our football team. (People hate the Cowboys, Yankees, Raiders, and Duke BB, because people who have never stepped foot in the state where those teams play, much less gone to a game, claim them as their own.) Those of us who claim our own (home town), sometimes (if not often) flawed and failed teams, who suffer through the lengthy droughts (Boston, you should, but may not identify), take pride in the devotion.

I feel we lost an irreplaceable guy. I was just telling my Cowboys friend that he should be worried about the Week 17 meeting since T.O. doesn't do squat when Taylor is in the lineup. I feel like we lost the free safety position forever. NO ONE and I mean NO ONE ever got me as excited about Redskins football as Sean Taylor and I don't think anyone will ever be the Redskins free safety that Sean was.

I still can't believe I will never see #21 lining up in the defensive backfield again. I actually liked seeing teams try to go deep on us this year. The only team that did so several times was Green Bay and ST made them pay. Whereas in the pre-ST era I hated seeing our D on the field, I actually enjoyed seeing our D on the field in the ST era. ST was the best part of any Redskins game.

Taylor was a very rare player. Indeed it will be a long time before we see a player of his caliber in our lineup.

Thank you for being the best . Sean, you quickly became my favorite redskin and the gave me so many hours of excitement.

There are so many individual plays, but Thank you SO MUCH for knocking the ball out of crayton's hands when they converted at the end of that game...

I was so sick of hearing how "Bill Parcells is 77-0 when leading by 10 or more points going into the fourth quarter"

Now he's 77-1. I wish you were still with us so much, but it looks like God drafts in November.

Thank you for being you. Always real, never desired media attention or the limelight, just family and football. Thank you for being my favorite Redskin. Thank you for learning from your mistakes growing up right before our eyes in your four short years with the team. Thank you for getting me out of my seat with your play on Sundays. Hey, Dolfan here (a little ashamed to admit). Just wanted to stop by and say my condolences. It just doesn't seem real. Sean was an amazing athlete and contributed so much to the sport. Every football fan loved to watch him and every opponent feared him.

It deeply saddens me to think about his daughter who will have to grow up without her real father, his fiance who lost her beloved future husband, and his parents who lost their son.

I am disgusted with the media as mentioned in another thread. Not just the media but almost anything I read, on any other football board, his past mistakes are brought up somehow. Yes, the guy made a few mistakes but come on, show some respect, the guy was just murdered in front of his fiance and daughter and they are putting him down, it's almost as bad as the murder itself.

Sean and his family are in my prayers. God bless you all.

I think it's sad that more people (I'm pointing at the media) aren't picking up on the fact that Taylor died while protecting his family.

Yeah, I still think about him often too. It's still so sad, he was on the right track personally and was going to be one of the all-time greats professionally.

Yet, so many of those who society can do without are still with us after we lose one of the great among us.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I'll never trade in Madden 08, it's too tough to make players now and that just isn't the same. Sean is the first guy I get in every franchise I start.

Same here, I think its almost harder to hit home because we didnt really know him...he was one of those rare players that I think people just got attached too (I think Cooley is the other current Skin that people get attached too as well)....hopefully we bring it home for Sean this season.

I'm glad someone brought this thread back up, I miss him and I'd like to continue talking about him. I hope life is getting better for his girlfriend and his daughter though, they are feeling the biggest impact of all this.

It IS wierd that someone presumably, none of us knew could and still does cause so much unrest. It's wierder still, but NFL football changed that day for me. It's just, somehow, not as good

Let me ask you this dmek: why do you have the Redskins' 70th anniversary patch as your icon?
My guess is that it's probably because you like that it reminds you of all the great times you have had in the past as a Redskins fan. It makes you proud to have followed a team for as long as you have; through thick and thin. And I assume that you like to talk about the good old times when the Redskins were a Super Bowl contender year in and year out.
You could probably go on all day and night about the beating the dolphins for that first ring. Or Doug Williams tearing the Broncos apart. Or the blitz knocking Jim Kelly to his ass time and again for that third title. What a bunch of great memories those guys gave us.

But hell, that was all in the past, so just move on. Get yourself a new icon and forget about all that crap. You didn't know any one on those teams so why should you care at all? It's time to let it all go and just move on. Screw the fact that the old teams brought some happiness into our lives. There's no reason to reminisce about them or to keep talking about what it was like to watch them play. We should just put it out of our minds and move on.

This is crazy. I hadn't really thought about Taylor that much until this morning on the way to work it suddenly hit me again. And I log on to the site, and this thread is revived.

Sean Taylor is gone, he's gone. We're talking about one of the best (if not the best) player our favorite NFL team has seen in the past 20+ years perhaps. And he's gone. There are no second chances for him. He can't "unretire" like Favre, he can't "clean up his act" like Adam Jones, he can't "rehab his way back to health" like Carols Rogers. He's gone. There won't be another bonecrushing hit on Patrick Crayton to secure a historic come-from-behind win on MNF at Dallas, there won't be another leap into the endzone to saor us into the playoffs, there won't be another one-handed interception tip-toeing down the sidelines. None of that will ever happen again with Sean Taylor. He's gone.

But he's not forgotten. You don't always need to let go to move on.

Yep, the finality of it all is what is so crushing. Whenever I see highlights of him I just can't believe it's over. It really sucks.

Its gonna be really weird not seeing 21 lurking in the defensive backfield this year...always think about how i wish he was still here. Its tough to grasp that he wont be around head hunting anymore.

On the bright side i really think he had a big impact on LaRon, more than ppl think. I think LaRon saw how it was done with his time with sean and said to himself i wanna be like that. If you watch LaRon play he reminds me of sean, not just the actual gameplay but also that "swagger" and that attitude that he doesnt care who you are hes gonna hit you in the mouth. thats what i loved most about sean he was never intimidated and didnt take anything from anyone.

Im in no way saying LaRon is the next SeanT but the closest damn thing ive seen, I like to think of him as Seans protege. Watching him kind of helps me deal with no 21 anymore. As a result dirty thirty and portis have become my favoritie skins

I dont think it has been said or expressed the impact that Sean had on LaRon just because of LaRon's quiet off the field nature. I mean think about it how many interviews has he given? just quiet and keeps to himself and handles his business very well on the field.

Of course nobody could have predicted what would happen with Taylor but that pick of Landry sure looks even better now.

I definitely agree with what you're saying. I was actually one of those people that said "another safety? We already have S.T.", but as is a lot of the time, in hindsight that turned out to be one of the best picks we've made in recent years. I never would've anticipated losing S.T. that suddenly though, it still hurts to this day and I can easily say I'm still not over it.

I'm not gonna jump on the Dmek is an insensitive a-hole bandwagon even though I don't agree with his comments. Losing someone just like that hurts deeply, it doesn't matter whether I knew him or not, which I didn't. I felt connected to him, almost a superstition of sorts, that if I didn't root hard enough for the 'Skins he and the rest of the team would suffer. It's like when women ask men why they get so excited when we get up and shout, Yesssssss!!!!!!!!! when a player makes a game ending interception to win the game for us.

I still love watching all his videos on Youtube, and I still enjoy looking at all the various pictures and everything on the web. I don't think so much about what could've been as it is celebrating all his accomplishments on and off the field. I wouldn't say not a day goes by where I don't think about him but I do think about him a lot.
