How could he be lobbying for GW when it was reported that he was backing the promotion of Cerrato? I'm going to assume Gibbs knew all about their bad blood. Not to make Gibbs out to be straddling the line or anything but he must have known that if Cerrato got promoted that GW was pretty much as good as gone.
And this is where Snyder's business experience, which as anyone who's been in any kind of large business for very long will tell you, is as much WHO you know as it is WHAT you know.

Joe was a true leader who understood how to motivate, empower, and respect people. What Snyder is showing me here is the classic Old Boy Network in action, and if it goes down like this, I won't be surprised if this whole thing is in flames by week five next season.

Just so everyone's clear on the implication I'm making, it's that booting GGggrilliamss because Vinny doesn't like him, and going after The Fossil because "he has ties with Cerrato" are about the worst ways you could run your business if you care at all about what the experts at the bottom who do the work (in this case, the players) think.

Real leaders hire smart people and then get out of their way and let them do their jobs.
Just to be clear on where I stand on this one.

I don't want Fassel at all.

Not as a head coach,

Not as coordinator,

Not as the guy who's going to take JC to the "next level".

Not as the next "whomever".

I don't care....don't want the guy - at all!
ditto..

only because I'd like about 10 others before him other than Williams.

I simply think Williams is the clear best choice. I give a lot of credence to an entire staff and lockr room putting their strong support behind one guy. They'd know best about whether the guy can lead and they have said "yes he can and should lead us". That ought to mean an awful lot. I am scared to think what it'll mean when he doesn't get the job honestly.
That's how I feel about the whole situation too. I'm trying to reserve judgment until I hear the official announcement. I'm also trying very hard to give Snyder the benefit of the doubt, but the whole thing just doesn't feel right for some reason.

Given the kind of season we had, I just think GW is in a better position to take over the leadership of this team right now. I think the cohesiveness of the staff and players is better than it has been in years. Why change that now and bring in a whole new dynamic with a new staff?
There are so many of us here who share in your belief. I'm also of the opinion that despite both Williams, and Fassel being considered rejects, or recycles, Williams is the more appropiate choice for this particular team at this particular time. Maybe Fassel could/would be a good hire, but not at this time. This team is too close to being able to acomplish something significant to have to undergo a makeover. Joe Gibbs leaving this team unexpectedly as he did leaves the team with more unsettled problems than just hiring a new coach. With a new coach comes all types of changes, changes no one in the orginization was/is prepared for.
LOL fan exodus?

I'd love to see it. We could afford to cut some dead weight.

Truth is all the people hating on this will be loving life if the team wins.

I think alot of people have too much emotion wrapped up in this decision and simply can't be objective about it right now. Maybe once the dust settles we'll see some more rational thinking. But for right now it's total freakout mode.
Yeah, there won't be any fan exodus. If we stuck around for Martyball and The Ol' Ball Coach, I see no great fan abandonment because of The Fossil.

But I think you and Smooty are both wrong if you think that fans won't be left with a bad taste in their mouth and a general embarrassment at the way Snyder runs OUR team (yes I said ours) if it goes down like this.

The reason that fans stuck by Joe in the second half of this season had as much to do with the way he led the team with dignity and passion than it did with the fact that we were winning games nobody gave us a chance in.

That same reason is why folks are going to be bitter with Snyder even if he brings in a totally new staff and the team starts winning some games. I don't think Skins fans are content to win a few games and feel like being a bunch of a-holes in the FO is okay as a result.

We want to return to the class organization we used to be. Sure, win a Super Bowl and a lot of sins are forgiven, but give me a break, we're all a little tired of crowning ourselves Super Bowl Champs in August and sitting at home watching other teams in the playoffs come December.

Oh, if Williams doesn't get the job you'll hear the nominal, we're glad with the decision. Gregg meant a lot, but this is a business...blah, blah, blah.

And let's not understimate the utter circus and media scrutiny the players will be subjected to from day one of training camp. Can you imagine the silly questions they're going to have to answer.

God forbid this team starts out 0-2 or 0-3, it will be chaos around here.

Honestly I really don't care and Snyder probably doesn't either. There are plenty of people out there that have already made up their minds to hate the guy no matter what, and when situations like this come up they can't wait to pounce, despite the fact they don't completely know or understand the entire situation.

it will be a complete joke. To have a guy that has learned under a hall of fame coach - a guy that has been loyal to your franchise, but not doing interviews two / three years ago when his name was hot again. To bring in Fassell, subject players to a new scheme again, have to remake the roster again, find a new staff again, to basically spit in your players faces is a joke. the majority of those guys wanted williams and this staff. The teams that consistantly put playoff teams on the field all have one thing in common, that is a stable coaching staff. NE, Indy,Philly,Seattle,Tampa,Giants,Jacksonville. Jacksonville has rode the tough times out with Del Rio, now he looks like he has a team molded in his way of playing. I just can't get over how ridiculous this hiring will be.

another bad move by the organization. This is what happens when you let Vinny help run the thing. He is scared for his job if GW comes in with personal power because he would do the same thing Marty did and fire his ass. So, he goes out and gets a guy that will not be able to do this, that will hire a staff that has ties to Vinny. what a joke. this is why we are continuously the joke of the NFL. We go to playoffs, make changes and stink the following year. Usually teams that make the playoffs may make a subtle change or add a guy here or there, we make whole sale changes like we finished 1-15.

its getting easier and easier to understand why we get bashed every year.

The only conclusion I can reach is that you guys pretty much universally support whatever Snyder decides to do, beyond any loyalty to coaches or the team's overall legacy and history.

Frankly sometimes I think you guys really don't give enough credit to Skins fans, especially those on this board who disagree, many of whom have proven that they aren't just screaming hordes who want a win no matter what.

If this is the place for "The Knowledgeable Fan" why do you guys continue to speak condescendingly to people who don't just fall in line with whatever decree is handed down from Redskins Park?

It's possible Dgack is referring to the Kent-Cooke era or even the Gibbs 2.0 era.

Yes, Gibbs had restored some sense of respectabiltiy to the organization and it looks as though we're on the brink of, perhaps, undoing that three weeks removed from his resigning.

You are usually one of the most level-headed guys here, but it sure seems like you are in "damage control" mode. Will the fan exodus of this potential move hurt more than the mismanagement of this great franchise?

Schneed and redsk1 seem to be right on point. Just look at the War Path's poll, not everyone but an overwhelming majority want GW. As much because of his earning the job HERE, rather than his previous head coaching resume.

And Paintrain, what's up with that sig comparing GW to Patrick Ramsey? Williams has had a successful NFL career! Comparing him to a disappointing 1st round pick is simply wrong.

For the record, I would like to see Williams as HC, keep Saunders and continue what Gibbs started. I would understand going with a Cowher type HC, but if we have to blow up the entire coaching staff for a "B" level HC, my heart-felt Redskins passion will take a huge hit.
It's a direct mocking parody of the 'Ramsey never got his fair chance' whining that went on when he was cut.. It's the same thing with Williams IMO.. He's not being given a chance to be the head coach so he's been wronged somehow..

I'm not a fan of Williams OR Fassel but I don't think either is God or the Devil either. Like I've said, it amazes me the blind faith a coach with a 17-31 NFL resume garners around here. Coordinating to being the head coach is a big jump that some aren't able to make (see Turner, Norval).

Re: Coaching Rumor on SportsTalk 980
He's not mine:

#1 - The players, Gibbs and other coaches support and endorse him..

#2 - A new coach will not have the ability to change the roster for another 3 years at least. The cap situation will make it too difficult. The new coach will, for the most part, have to sink or swim for the next three years with the players already on the roster. See this thread for more:

http://www.redskinswarpath.com/locker-room/22139-coach-selection-the-cap-rebuilding.html

#3 - Can we please keep Jason Campbell in the same offensive system? Note that every time the team has gone with a new system, the year after the change resulted in 5-11 season (2004) and a 6-10 season (2006). After being in a system for a year, the team went to the playoffs in each subsequent season.

#4 - Getting rid of Gregg will mean you lose Saunders, Jerry Gray, and possibly Joe Bugel. I can't seen any scenario in which the new staff is comprised of better coaching minds than the one we've got right now. It's not all about the head coaches, it's about the assistants too.

#5 - Gregg felt the loss of Sean Taylor just as much as anyone on the team. He'll be in a position to relate to the players on a personal level. Chemistry between coaches and players cannot possibly be any better than with GW.
Ok, won't #2 also occur if Williams is the coach? For #3 Campbell played in a West Coast offense before and had his best collegiate season. It's not like he's having to learn a new sport. #4 Saunders was gone anyways so that's moot. So you believe we have the best staff of assistant coaches in the NFL? #5 I can't really debate, but I don't know how much that's gonna impact us on a 3rd and 13 at the 45 yard line in late November at Dallas..

I'm still not sure how any of those things make him the sure fire lock to be the coach to lead us for the near and far future.

If Snyder didn't care, Mark Shapiro would add head coach to his Six Flags responsibilities.

Look, the 12thMans and Schneeds of this site who present valid arguments about their concerns-I have the utmost respect for them. Others who say stupid shit like "Danny needs to sell the team" "I'm getting rid of all my Redskins stuff" "I'll never watch another game" and so on-those people deserve to be mocked, ridiculed, and scorned. To the fullest extent. They don't need my respect of course, but if they're expecting it then they're certainly not going to get it with posts like that.

I think I've been pretty clear in saying Fassel is not my top choice. Neither is Williams really.

But what I've been saying (and I think others as well) is that a) no decision has been officially made so quit crying and b) why can't we see how everything plays out first (staff, roster) and make a more informed decision maybe sometime in the spring?

On another note. When I hear the Sean Taylor argument, while I understand it sometimes I can't help but relate it to when people ask "Why Giuliani?" and the answer is just "9/11"

Zorn, as we were the first to report, interviewed for the offensive coordinator job. He is set to depart around 5:40 and if all goes well he would be the leading candidate to replace Al Saunders (with whatever fancy title they want to use).

I sure hope this is not true.

Someone said they thought Gibbs was rubbing off on Snyder....
First thing he does is promote Cerrato....what a joke....now he's gunna blow up the coaching staff on the best playoff team he's had?

This is not a young team...look at the O-line and some geezers on D.
We have little cap ability to get more experienced talent.
And now, our team will have to relearn an entirely new offense and defense?

Hell....I'd rather see SAUNDERS as head coach than to blow it up for FASSEL.
and to give up drafts for an offensive coordinator when we have a solid one entering year 3 when it usually blossoms?

Man....I HATE snyder....I really HATE this guy....but I hate the cowboys more.
Hopefully an asteroid will hit him before he makes any more crappy decisions.
Backrow and CapnChaos47, I can respect that totally. The harsh, bold reality is I'll be cheering the Redskins on and supporting whomever they hire come training camp. But if they don't hire Williams, it's going to leave a bad test in my mouth for a long, long time.
We've been through changes before - we'll be through changes again. You know what I do for bad tastes in my mouth? Grill up one hell of a steak and cover it in fried onions!!! :headbange

I understand these forums, threads, the never ending 24/7 scope of news we now have - exist for this purpose, to allow us to have an opinion... that's great! I love opinions!

I just hate to see all this emotion put forth towards something we a)have no control over b)will look back at and laugh if we win the NFC East in '08 and c)have much dire needs in the world we ''could'' focus such emotion too.

Either way - it doesn't matter. I love this team either way, it's just football. Doesn't change the way I make a living and support my family.

none of you have a clue what was said in those interviews snyder has done. none of you know if williams made an ass of himself... none of know that snyder could have talked to gibbs about what was said in those interviews to make snyder want fassel. none of you know anything... snyder definitely asked grilliams many questions and just maybe, just maybe williams tanked. just maybe snyder talked to ralph wilson about how williams as a head coach made decisions in all aspects of the game and the outcome was bad. so, lets quit assuming you know what is best for this football team... shall we?
It's pretty clear Snyder doesn't care at all. I'm a little mystified why you and the other mods are so surprised or disagree with the outrage, though.

Because anytime a major event happens we hear the same old crap. The world is ending, blah blah blah.

None of use are big Snyder supports, if that's what you think you really haven't paid much attention. We just get tired of the knee jerk, emotional, whiny reactions.

Who's telling anyone to fall in line?? If you read between the lines all we're saying is relax, take a deep breath, consider all angles to the story, don't jump to conclusions, and the sun will come up tomorrow.

You're right, and for that very reason, I've personally withheld judgement about Snyder and how he's handled it all. Because I don't know what has transpired behind the scenes.

While I'm not judging him on this, I'm not exactly in his corner either.
