Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
He is doing everything himself. All interviews at his house. Some HC candidates are sleeping in his guest house.
Mr. Smootsmack - are you saying he is not involved in every aspect of the decision making of football operations?
Of course he's involved. He should be involved. But meetings at his house are nothing new and not a big deal. Would you prefer they be at your house? And it's not like these are one on one meetings. Cerrato is there, other members of the ownership group are there. I don't know. I really don't see him being involved with the interviews can be seen as a negative. Imagine the backlash if after a coach is selected Snyder said "I have nothing to say. I stayed out of it" "What? You're the owner of the damn team and you're not involved??? Go back to Johnny Rockets!" |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
Snyder is always going to have his hand in things, like it or not. To what degree he does or has in the past nobody really knows. I guess it's just convenient to assume he's at fault for everything.

True. I know if I owned a team I would be involved. How about everyone else? |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
Any owner should be involved, but finding common sense in his actions is not exactly easy. Maybe there is a grand plan that is eluding the mass majority of us, but more and more it looks like DS doesn't know what he's doing. I don't really care who the next coach is going to be. I know they'll have one and I'll root for the team, but this disorganized mess is making it hard to get too excited.

Then they should put up a picture of Snyder with the slogan, "The buck doesn't stop here." Because nobody knows who is calling the shots or taking ultimate responsibility. So you are saying there is no leadership it is run by committee? |
True.
I know if I owned a team I would be involved. How about everyone else?
I would be neck-deep in team affairs. Re: Dan Snyder losing respectibility?
I must admit that I do like some of the things Dan Snyder has done in the community he lives in, it's hard not to appriciate that.
But getting down to football he is not a very good owner. What has this team won in the time he has been the owner? We've had three playoff appreances and that's it. Two of those three came in the four years Gibbs came back. Joe again has left the team in much better shape than he found it. I'm sure that Dan has his reasons for taking so long to hire a HC but still there must be something wrong with his approach in all of this that has keep him for hiring someone by now or that has made others say I don't want the job. It might be that no other coach wants to work for him other as the HC other than Fassal. Tell me that Meeks or Spags is not a much better choice than Fassal and Gregg Williams certainly was. The truth is The Washington Redskins have not been worth a damn under the ownership of Dan Synder and that's just that. I hope he sells the team soon. Because we as fans will never celebrate another world title with the team under Dan and his flunky Vinny C. Jack Kent Cook didn't agree with a lot of things Joe Gibbs wanted to do when Joe worked for Cook but he did so and things turned out pretty damn good I'd say, four Super Bowl trips and three Lombardi trophies to show for it. Dan should have listen to Gibbs and hired Williams and things would have turned out much better for the team. It's truly a shame that this team is probably going to be around mediocore or worse with all of the talent it has just because the owner can't or want listen to the man who got this team back into the playoff 2 out of 4 years after being out of the league for 12 years and as I said earlier he has left the team in far better shape than he found it. It's a sad, sad time for the team and the fans. But I've been pulling for the Skins for to long now to turn away so I'll just hope that things turn out well no matter who Dan hire as the HC. So no I wouldn't want to be the guy hired as head coach after the OC and DC have been put in place. Because I would feel like I didn't have any control or the respect of the other coaches or the players.
Dang we let GW go and I guess or SB went right out the door with him. How do you know if we are better off with GW by his record as a head coach? |

Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
I seem to recall the whole negotiation with the Bears LB that Snyder hot for this last offseason. I remember hearing Snyder negotiating with the guy in a bar with out Gibbs or any of the defensive coaches aware or consulted in any way about if they even wnated him. This is an example of Snyder getting too involved over his head.

Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
So many people have suggested that Mr. Snyder should just stand down, have no say in football matters, just let others run the team and he just sign the checks. Well, it's not going to happen. I'll be one of the first to admit the man has made some mistakes in his decision making, but whose perfect here? We all make mistakes, but to repeatedly point out his mistakes would cause one to wonder if he has any strengths'.
I do know one thing, if I pay $800mil for a sports franchise, I'm going to have some say as to how things are done. I may not always be right, and I may be critized, but that's the nature of the beast when you're in a position open to public scrunity. Things weren't always coming up roses with Cooke, Bethard and Gibbs during the time when the team enjoyed success on a sustained basis either, but the key to it all was the team won games. It was also during a time when every household didn't have a computer, and so much propaganda spread through the various media outlets on a 24/7 cycle. I pray that I will live to see the day when Mr.Snyder finally gets it right, and the team will get back to winning on a consistent basis, however, until that day comes there will without a doubt be more threads like this one and the Snyder bashing will continue. |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
I think you guys take things to such extremes. I am not advocating Mr. Snyder turn into a marsh mellow and just sign the checks. For eight years Snyder has done it his way and it has not worked. I would like see him be humble enough try something diffrent. Bring in a strong GM and let him call the player personnel shots with Snyder in an advisory role of course. But the Gm and HC should get the final say so. Then lets see what happens. It hasn't been tried. What is so wrong with trying something new?
It works for the other highly successful teams in the NFL, it might work for us? |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
I hate to play the IF game.. But...
IF the Giants had lost against GB 3 weeks ago do you think we'd already have a coach in place since he was obviously waiting on Spagnuolo? IF we had a coach in place do you think we'd care so much about Cerrato being named EVP? IF we had a coach in place 3 weeks ago and Cerrato was named EVP would we still be talking about Snyder's meddling ways? |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
It works for the other highly successful teams in the NFL, it might work for us?
Hiring a GM might work for us, but so might the current arrangement. Jerry Jones, as owner, has done quite well lately even though he is just as involved in team affairs as Dan Snyder. I'm still convinced that most of our woes are attributable to our inability to find a quality quarterback. If JC develops into an above average QB, I think most of our woes will fall by the wayside. |
Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
I don't have a problem with the Redskins structure or Danny's involvement. My concern is that Vinny may not be qualified for his job and he is the only person who has not been made accountable for the results of the team since Snyder has owned the team. Maybe this promotion for Vinny will finally make him accountable...if they win he stays and if they lose he goes. That's what it comes down to for me...I know Snyder will always be involved but if Vinny is going to be his right hand man then he needs to be judged on results only just like every other person Snyder has hired & fired.

Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
As for Williams deserving it: He HAD been a good lieutenant. He did a fine job with the resources at hand. More importantly, last year, after a horrible prior year, Williams was willing to come in and, essentially, tear up the prior year's play book, stop forcing a system that wasn't necessarily suited to his players, and adapt so that, rather than his brilliance, the players abilities shined through. In other words, Williams as coach showed some essential growth by adapting to his players rather than having his players adapt (totally) to him. As a result, his coaching improved.
As for Snyder and William not getting along with people, or with each other: IMO, Snyder has NOT shown this ability to subordinate his will. Marty may have gutted the team and lost five, he then turned the team around and made a solid run. Even though Marty was turning things around from camp Norv, Snyder, in your words, "was uncomfortable". Why? B/c Marty was running the show, not Little Danny. Now, again, faced with a coach who had shown the ability to adapt to his talent and who had the backing of his players - Danny essentially is unable to subordinate his will to that of the "football man". Bottom line - Danny, as Jerry Jones and Al Davis, wants to run the show. It's his property and he's the one who payed millions for it, but, until he has success, he will catch hell. Part of the problem with his obsession to succeed is that it appears to be a need to succeed his way. "His way" has not been a success, and, because of its lack of success, he has little credibility w/ fans or the national press when continues to pursue it. B/c I am a fan, I hope he succeeds - not b/c I wish any particular goodwill to Little Danny, but b/c I am sick of my team being mediocre.
Awesome post, good points in the parallel between Marty & GW. One footnote to add, it's interesting to look back at Spurrier's time here w/regards to personel. All those journeymen gators came here, and I would doubt that was coincidence. Spurrier at least had a lot of input. So, while marty was canned maybe because he had too much control, the danny has shown signs of giving in to the people he hires. Maybe this time around he's really giving Vinny a lot of authority. I think you're right overall, but we're still learning danny's "way" just as he is. |

This year will be a clearer picture as to what Vinny can do for us. In seasons past, it wasn't always clear as to who was actually controlling personnel. At times we didn't always know to give Gibbs or Vinny credit. Likewise, we didn't know to blame Gibbs or Vinny. We always assumed Gibbs made the right moves and Vinny the wrong ones. One of the reasons, or maybe, THE reason his team has had winning seasons 3 of the last 5 years is he hired a football guy & gave him a lot of authority - the tuna. JJ has mellowed a lot too & has learned from his mistakes. Don't forget he's been on the job 10 years longer than danny & is a couple decades+ older. The Danny will mellow & learn too. True but it's not just the Gibbs years, save for when Marty fired him Vinny has had some level of input every year in what has been a pretty mediocre tenure. This has been discussed in other threads recently but in this decade the Cowboys aren't significantly better than the Redskins regarding wins and losses, and they haven't won a playoff game in forever either. Jones won back in the day with JJ, who let's face it had a great eye for talent and was mainly responsible for their success. I honestly don't think the disdain for Snyder will ever completely go away. It comes and goes, but it seems whenever there's an opportunity to pounce, people jump all over him. |

Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
I'm not sure he's losing respect, but I do believe he clearly miscalculated the coaching situation. i'm not one to criticize Snyder, mostly because I think he listened to what his coaches told him they needed (ie- why i so hard on the coaches). At this point, we erred in signing coordinators ahead of the head coach, and I think Snyder knows it. live and learn- I think he'll get it right soon. not a fan of Vinny- at all.

Re: Dan Snyder losing respectability?
Sorry, that just didn't make sense getting these assistants before getting the HC. I mean who ever has heard of that before? Usually the HC brings in his own guys so they are on the same page and have good chemistry together. With the way it is you are forcing the HC to adapt to total strangers that might have a different vision than he does, and this might cause some future discord down the line. Snyder screwed up bigtime when he canned Marty. Marty could have gotten us to the next level. I do not think the Skins are going to get to the next level for some time now until a GM is in place and/or Snyder gets cured of his control freak problem.

You get a big star for that one. Your first point is especially important. The adjustment that Williams had to go through after the disaster of 2006 is something that we may not have seen if Lil' Danny had his way. In fact, it sheds light on the mentality of Snyder hiring coordinators before getting a head coach. He wants the ability to fire them if he doesn't like what he sees. It's something that probably ate away at Snyder during the Gibbs years. You can just tell he was feverishly biting his nails at the chance to drop the ax on both Williams and Saunders when things weren't going right. So it all makes sense now. Hire the coordinators first, -- new head coach comes in with the understanding that he has no contol over the offensive and defensive staff leaders, -- Lil' Danny gets impatient with the offense or defense, and boom! He can fire them midseason if need be because he hired them and the coach didn't. Sheer brilliance on the part of Dan Snyder. |

In response to the titular question of this thread: Has Dan Snyder ever held any measurable amount of respect around the NFL? He's got a fat wallet, but not a lot else. I think that this offseason has been hugely negative for the perception of the Washington Redskins around the league. If this team doesn't start conducting business in a manner that is widely respected, they will find it harder to attract quality free agents and coaches. We can always rely on getting the player looking for a huge pay day, but that seldom benefits the team in the long run. I've honestly had this feeling lately that one day we'll be watching the draft and our first round pick will refuse to play for the 'Skins ala Eli Manning/John Elway. When/If that happens, we know we've hit rock bottom in the respect dept.

i do feel like he will have to bring in someone with ties to the organization to re-establish trust. |
