Looks like we threw in a 6th rounder in 2010. From JLac:

Skins Trade For Taylor

Vinny Cerrato just announced the Skins acquired Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor from Miami for a second round pick in 2009 and a sixth round pick in 2010.
JT is better than Daniels. Let's hope he's still got something in the tank. I worry about his motivation, but hopefully Blache will light a fire under his ass.

Carter and Taylor as bookends is not bad in the short term. Let's hope Vinny can get the pick back one way or another.
Not at strong-side DE he's not. Not many successful 255 lb Strong-side DEs.

We're in a bind but, I'd rather have done 3rd & 6th, or look elsewhere.

True--wonder how they'll work it? JT on the strong side on passing downs? Demetric against the run?

I meant the guy was the NFL defensive player of the year in 2006--he adds quality on the D line.

Anyway, though today's events we're certainly unfortunate, it's one thing to preach depth, ignore your defensive lines on draft day, and have confidence in your backup players. It's something completely different to say you have confidence in guys like Evans and Wilson, and then freak out and pay a premium for Jason Taylor.

Between now and draft day 2009, we're going to be very happy with this deal. I just want to make a note today: it's going to hurt us more in the long run than it helps us now. I do think Taylor is going to do a lot of things this year to make us forget how much we paid for him, but a second rounder is a lot.

I would have given Evans and Wilson a shot to combine to hold down the fort. Veteran depth is pretty cheap if you don't go top rung.

Re: Phillip Daniels is done for the season, Buzbee also hurt (updated)

apparently a lot of people here don't realize the drop off here between every-down average daniels and our crap situational depth...

EJ is good (and by good i mean average when/if ever healthy), but that's it. we don't need another season of warrick holdman like defensive play.

get taylor, get him cheap, since he wants to win, wants to retire and will give us a good year, which is all we need. before now i would have said no, but we took a shot where we couldn't afford one.

a 2nd rounder is robbery, but they had us at gunpoint :/

we need 2-3 years at good contract/performance to make good on it.

More from JLac--Taylor will play on the left, AND (according to Vinny) play more than one year. Wonder how Vinny is so sure of that?

Skins Trade For Jason Taylor

Vinny Cerrato just announced the Skins acquired Pro Bowl DE Jason Taylor from Miami for a second round pick in 2009 and a sixth-round pick in 2010.

The Skins assume the final two years of Taylor's contract as is, Cerrato said. Taylor has talked about playing just one more season before leaving the NFL for Hollywood, but Cerrato, Washington's executive VP of football operations, said, "I'm 100 percent confident he'll play more than one year.".

Cerrato said he began talking to the Dolphins this afternoon, following Washington's second practice. He said immediately after practice that the Redskins had had no contact with other teams about trades as of that point, so, I guess if you take him at his word this deal came together in like 90 minutes.

Cerrato said the season-ending injuries to starting left end Phillip Daniels and reserve end Alex Buzbee forced Washington to exhaust all options. He said Taylor will move to the left side with Washington - he played right end in Miami - and Andre Carter will remain the starting right end.

"We're fortune there is a guy of that caliber on the market when a guy gets hurt," said Cerrato.

Taylor is a former NFL player of the year who brings elite pass rushing skills, something sorely missing on this line for years (though Carter had a strong season in 2007). Defensive line has long been an area of concern for Washington.

I would assume there will be a bunch of rotations trying to create mismatches. We might see JT at DT, same side as A.Carter, for a different look on passing downs. GB is going to need some smoke and mirrors up front, but he's a DL coach so if anyone can work it out, he can.

Daniels is a year and a half older than Taylor; Jason will turn 34 just before opening day.

He's a high quality defensive end, and he's proven able to play the run and the pass. If one of our defensive tackles can command a double team, then the rest of the line is singled up and we should be fine.

I like it, we now have two pass rushers on the line, two 10 sack guys which should raise the level of play for everyone.

don't let his weight fool you, he really is incredibly strong.

Replaced by two pass rushers, both of whom work to get to the QB.

I'm also guessing that this change means less blitzing, and more of a deep cover two. If Carter can be half as good as he was last year, then he and Taylor should be able to combine for about a sack a game, without any pressure added.

This move isn't all that different from Minnesota getting Jared Allen, except that they paid a lot more, Allen is a more complete player, and he'll actually be around in 2010.

But this does make us a much better team this season.

You're right he's a workout monster like Carter. But he doesn't have a low center of gravity and taking on 300+ lb'ers, who are normally more "road-grader" types than most LTs, (with double teams) at the point of attack on strong-side runs is what has me a bit concerned.

We should be OK in that our D is normally an attacking type D, not that "read and react" BS Mike Nolan used when he was here that had us at the bottom of the NFL is Rushing Yds Allowed

that's true, but i think he's proven that his game is solid and he hasn't missed a game since 1999, so even though i don't think he'll be around long enough to make the draft price a plus for us, we've definitely upgraded the team in the short term.

In the passing game, I agree but we've got to face our division folks, plus the Ravens & Steelers who figure to be pretty run heavy as usual. I think if GB stays aggressive in running situations and our secondary stays healthy (Hail Mary full of grace...) we should be OK.

Plus, Mix and Kelly on the outside at WR, audible to double fades, money....LOL!

Also, I hate to say this, but how long do you think it will take the Redskins Store Online to have JT jerseys for sale? Over/Under on Tuesday 7/22.

I didn't see this anywhere else on the board but, according to Redskin blogger Matt Terl, Fred Smoot is fine and practiced today.

To answer some common questions: Smoot is fine, and is practicing today. Jason Campbell has streaks of terrific throwing, and some slower streaks. Yes, Shawn Springs looks like he’s in terrific shape and say he feels great.

smoot played with a sterum injury, so it's not like an ankle was going to be a huge deal. good to know he's better already though.

Can Smooty and Shawn, hold up for most of the season though is the big question? Sure they are fine now, but how will they be say come weeks 12-16 when a playoff spot might be on the line?

I think his presence will be missed against the run this year.
